and parents. It is a
place we gather to
celebrate — that is
“community.” I am
proud to share these
experiences with you.
We are at the beginning
of a brand new season at
the Reif Center. This year
we will be celebrating our
30th Anniversary, for those
who keep track of such
things. The facility was
dedicated on January 31,
1981. This marks my 15th
season at the Reif Center,
though it seems like
yesterday. With more than
40 performances this year,
there is guaranteed to be
something in this season
for EVERYONE.
One thing you will see throughout the season
is a reference to “Legacy Funding.” In 2008 the
voters in Minnesota passed a constitutional
amendment to increase our sales tax just a bit.
Those new funds were dedicated specifically
to ensure clean water, to expand wildlife
habitat, and to extend cultural opportunities
for everyone living in Minnesota. While it’s not
much (37¢ on a $100 purchase), those funds
add up quickly and you will see quite a number
of Reif events supported with these new funds.
This is a particularly proud moment for us all in
Minnesota.
We often refer to the Reif Center as our
community’s “front porch.” It is a place where
we see friends and neighbors and where we
can exchange ideas and “build community.”
We come to the Reif Center to be entertained
and to engage in exciting new experiences. We
come with friends and family and with children
You will note
a number of
celebrations
throughout the year
and more will be
announced as plans
are finalized. Please
help us at the Reif
Center by sharing
word of our great
treasure with others.
And let us know how
we can improve in
our mission to “…stimulate the arts in Northern
Minnesota…” My contact information is below,
and I hope to hear from you.

Myles Reif Performing Arts Center
Celebrates
years of live
entertainment
January 31, 2011, marks the 30th Anniversary of the dedication of the Myles
Reif Performing Arts Center. As far back as the 1960s, arts activist and
Grand Rapids native, Lois Gildemeister, proposed the building of an arts
facility in Grand Rapids. After years of discussion and planning with the
Blandin Foundation, the new center was finally realized as a collaboration
with ISD 318. The facility was dedicated posthumously as the Myles Reif
Performing Arts Center to honor Myles Reif (Blandin Foundation officer and
Blandin Paper Company Plant Manager), who worked vigorously to see the
center realized, but who did not live to see it completed. The result has
been an exceptional community resource, with 30 years of nationally and
internationally respected artists on its stage. To mark the occasion, the Reif
Arts Council is presenting a week-long anniversary celebration (January 30
through February 5), filled with performance events, residency experiences,
and artists in the schools. The celebration will culminate on Friday, February
4, with a special performance featuring special guest musician Robert
Bluestone.

Vienna Boys’
Choir
Every person has music in them.We all are part of culture;being a chorister is a way to
contribute to our culture.
More than half a millennium ago, Emperor Maximilian I moved
his court to Vienna, giving specific instructions that there were
to be six boys among his court musicians. Historians have settled
on 1498 as the official foundation date of the Vienna Boys’ Choir.
Today there are around 100 choristers between the ages of ten
and 14, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs perform
over 300 concerts each year in front
of almost half a million people,
carrying on the finest of choral
traditions.

Houston Ballet II
Houston Ballet II is the second company of the Houston Ballet,
America’s fourth largest ballet company. Though they are called
“II,” there is nothing second-fiddle about them! Featuring a stellar
roster of young artists, HB II performs an array of dance works,
from classical excerpts, such as Sleeping Beauty, to contemporary
works by Houston Ballet Artistic Director, Stanton Welch.
The Reif is especially proud to present the Houston Ballet. Two of
our Reif Dance faculty, Daniel and Julie Blake, are products of this
acclaimed program. Both attended the Houston Ballet Academy
and performed both solo and corps roles with the main company.

Rhythmic Circus
Rhythmic Circus has quickly risen from an underground
percussive-dance phenomenon to an innovative live
performance company known for transforming their tap shoes
into instruments of rhythm. The Minneapolis Star Tribune put
it well when they called the dance troupe “Flat out amazing!”
The company’s repute goes well beyond the sum of the dancers’
talents; themed pieces include costume changes and musical
segues highlighting the funky styling of a seven-piece band.
The combined and highly integrated talents of the dancers and
musicians alike have built a reputation for leaving audiences on
their feet and dancing in the aisles!

Three-time Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre is the hottest
young Latin band performing today. Equally at home in concert
halls, jazz clubs and dance venues, the members of the Miamibased band are true modern heirs to the rich musical traditions
of their native Cuba. Though classically trained, the group has
reinterpreted and reinvigorated traditional Cuban music, with
a modern, youthful sound. They are celebrated internationally
for their incendiary, joyful performances of timba, an irresistible,
dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and the seductive
rhythms of son.

Cherryholmes
Chances are you’ve never encountered a family quite like the
Cherryholmes. As little as 10 years ago, the band itself didn’t
exist, and half of its youthful members had never picked up
instruments. Now, after winning the International Bluegrass
Music Association award for Entertainer of the Year and four
Grammy nominations, it’s hard to imagine bluegrass music
without them. Featuring twin fiddles, Irish step-dancing,
classic country yodeling, old-time clawhammer banjo, and
even some soulful gospel singing, the Cherryholmes are
aggressive without losing the precision of smooth, blended
family harmony.

“Legends” is the first word that comes to mind, or perhaps “icons

term may be, the fact is the Rolling Stones and their music have
out-lived and out-toured more rock artists than any other group

Ragamala
dance theater
Ragamala is an Indian dance company from
Minneapolis. Though rooted in Bharatanatyam,
a classical dance form from southern India,
Ragamala goes beyond the traditional
to create work that resonates with new
audiences. Old forms are used in new ways
to retain the past, enhance the present and
inspire the future. Their unique contemporary
dances, while still of an ancient artistic
tradition, are a bridge not only between
ancient and modern, but between cultures.
Ragamala performances are an enchanting
blend of dance, music and poetry.
In celebration of Ragamala Dance Theater’s

The Commonweal

Lanesboro,
Minn., is one
of the nation’s
best interpreters
of Norwegian
playwright
Henrik Ibsen,
and one of the

proud to present
Ibsen’s 1882

intolerance. It is a classic satire about the irrational tendencies of the

MINNESOTA’S ARTS & CULTURAL
HERITAGE FUND
Thank you for voting “Yes!” to the Minnesota Arts
& Cultural Heritage Fund in November
2008! As a result of your historic
support, three-eighths of one percent
of the Minnesota’s sales tax will be
dedicated to a fund from which nearly
20 percent will be earmarked for arts
and arts programming. That’s good
news for the Reif Center! Although it
seems like a long time ago since this
groundbreaking amendment passed,
the Reif is just now feeling the positive
effects in terms of our organization’s budget.
The primary result of these new dollars allows us
to support programming from around the State
that we previously would not be able to present.
In particular, five Reif Center performances are
brought to you because of Legacy
Funds (Ragamala, The Mushroom
Picker, Rhythmic Circus, An Enemy of the
People, and Duluth Superior Symphony
Orchestra).
We are certain that you will be delighted
with the strength, integrity, and poise
of these polished productions, and we
just wanted to say thanks for your part
in making this happen, and a special
thank you to the Minnesota State Arts Board
for managing and distributing these important
Legacy Funds to arts organizations throughout
Minnesota.

Stringfever
French pianist, Lise de la
Salle, began playing at age
four. At nine, she gave her
first concert, which was
broadcast live by Radio
France, and made her
formal debut at the Louvre
at age 13. For such a young
artist, she takes her music
seriously, concentrating on
the essential. She does not
want to dazzle and glitter,
to seduce and pretend —
she wants to be herself.
The piano is her means of
communication, and with it,
she can say more than she
can with words.

Eric Himy
gershwin in paris
Eric Himy is one of those little-known pianists whose concerts are gems,
and very infrequently found. This performance features the works of
music great, George Gershwin, but in a most beguiling and novel way —
through transcription. The art of transcription, of recasting music, more
or less, can sometimes shed new light on already familiar music. A good
transcription tests the abilities and imagination of the transcriber, trying
to maintain the distinct characteristics of a given work, while meeting the
demands of a new medium.

Wailin’ Jennys
Three extraordinary voices — one singular vision. The Wailin’ Jennys
continue to evolve into far more than the melodious sum of their
individual talents. Almost eight years after blowing in on a fresh
acoustic breeze from Canada’s midwestern heartland, this awardwinning folk trio has released four albums and toured throughout
North America and Europe. The group has also made appearances on
Garrison Keiller’s A Prairie Home Companion, sharing the stage with
luminaries such as Bonnie Raitt and Meryl Streep.

Tartan Terrors
Taking the Celtic scene by storm, the Tartan Terrors have been
described as, ”one act to keep an eye on!” Combine the prowess of
championship-caliber Highland Dancers, internationally recognized
comedic performers, the driving tones of drums from around the
world, a guitar played unlike any you’ve heard, and the blistering
piping of a Two-Time World Champion Bagpiper, and understand
why the Tartan Terrors are recognized as North America’s premier
Celtic Event.

Richie Havens
Gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular
music, Richie Havens has a soulful singing style that
remains as unique and ageless as when he first emerged
from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960s.
For four decades, since his historic
appearance at the first Woodstock
Music & Arts Fair in 1969, Richie
Havens has used music to convey
messages of brotherhood and
personal freedom, “I’m not in show
business;” Havens says, “I’m in the
communications business. I sing
songs that move me.”

Dark Star Orchestra
grateful dead tribute
Dark Star Orchestra is a tribute to the extensive music catalog of the
Grateful Dead. Each show is based on the set list from one of the
Grateful Dead’s 30 years of concerts, incorporating their original songs
and most often-played covers. DSO approaches their performances like
an orchestra interprets classical works; channeling the composer’s spirit
to capture the excitement and innovation of the original compositions.
Rolling Stone praises DSO’s “fanatical attention to detail,” allowing fans,
young and old, to relive the experience!

dr. etta
If you’ve ever seen Etta May before, you haven’t seen her like this!
Dr. Etta is a unique, original show that everybody can relate to on so
many levels. It is a hilarious look at the breakdown of the American
Family. Staged as a seminar, this two-act play makes you laugh one
minute and cry the next. It’s common sense for the common man.
The family of the 21st century is deathly ill, and Dr. Etta has the cure!

The Mushroom Picker
Sunday, December 12, 2010 / 7:30pm
Matt “The Mushroom Picker”
Konop, was never willing
to share the stories of his
World War II experience.
After his death, however,
his family stumbled upon
journals that revealed
he was a genuine hero,
having liberated the
Czech towns of his parents
and grandparents. His
grandson, so moved at
finally understanding
his grandfather’s history,
created this one-man
presentation based on
those writings. Performed
on Veteran’s Day, The
Mushroom Picker is a timely
celebration of the valor of
our armed forces.

John Berry
Mention his
name to just
about any
country music
lover and the response will
likely be, “What an awesome
vocalist!” John Berry is noted
for the intense passion he has
brought to hits such as Your
Love Amazes Me and Standing
on the Edge of Goodbye. His
wide-ranging tenor voice is
an instrument of stupendous
power. Back at the Reif
Center for a special holiday
performance, this concert
will fill you with the spirit of
Christmas.
This activity is funded,
in part, by the

Gary Puckett
It was Gary Puckett’s signature voice that led popular rock band,
The Union Gap, to stardom in the 1960s. The group garnered six
consecutive gold records and top ten Billboard hits, for such titles
as Young Girl, Woman Woman, and Lady Willpower; at one point
selling more records than the Beatles. Throughout his career,
Puckett has performed on more than 30 network television shows
and primetime specials, even adding a command performance for
the President and Prince Charles at the White House. His ongoing
success proves that some things just get better with age.

This unique performance by world-renowned photographer,
Jim Brandenburg and performing artist, Michael Monroe, is a
rare experience for eye and ear. Brandenburg and Monroe share
their understanding of Minnesota’s north woods and wilderness
as our “backyard.” Together they explore the subtle, quiet places
that spark the imagination and touch the heart. Brandenburg’s
breathtaking images and the rich tones of Monroe’s vocals,
guitars and bamboo flutes create a poetic blend. Find yourself
moved by the music, enthralled by the stories behind some
of the most famous nature photographs of all time, and
mesmerized by the creative collaboration of two of our region’s
most inspired artists.

Switchback
It can be somber and solemn, or witty and whimsical. Few other
genres seem as well-suited to the array of human emotions as Celtic
music, and the Irish duo Switchback is one of the best bands suited for
the job. “Celtic music is a very tribal kind of music,” said McCormack,
who plays guitar and bass guitar. “Whether you’re a Celt or not—Irish
or not—you feel it. It’s a music and culture that appeals to everyone.”

Michael Johnson
His voice immediately identifies him as the man who sings Bluer
Than Blue, Give Me Wings, That’s That, This Night Won’t Last Forever
and other landmark songs. In his music, Michael Johnson shows a
diversity, depth and heart that only come from years of dedication
to a labor of love. What you’re sure to take with you is the meaning
of the lyric, the music of the guitar, and the feeling of being at home
with a friend.
