Enjoy our Encore of Favorites!
Hopefully you have by now heard the news (or at least rumblings) that the Reif Center is looking forward
to a grand renovation and expansion in the upcoming years. We’ve currently raised nearly 90 percent of the
necessary funds to complete an $8.4 million transformation. With that, many things will change: technical
and ADA upgrades to the existing theater; a secondary venue for more intimate performances; the addition
of a more open and welcoming lobby and ticket office; and, perhaps most importantly, expanded restroom
facilities. What will never change, is our commitment to presenting quality national and international
touring performances to the region.
Because of our renovation plans, the 2014-2015 Season at the Reif will be a little shorter. We plan to break
ground April 2015, so our finale performance will be on March 31 (The Master Builder — it’s sort of an inside
joke). In spite of the short Season, we’ve booked a full-season’s worth of amazing entertainment.
As this Season came together, we realized what a salute it was to many of the wonderful performances that
have been across our stage in the last 33 years. That is the meaning behind our theme, Encore of Favorites!
You will recognize familiar faces, including Kathy Mattea; the Rock & Roll Xmas Spectacular; A Christmas
Carol; the Commonweal Theatre; and the South African a cappella ensemble, Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Many are new renditions of old favorites, like Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, which is sure to excite our
Winter Dance Party fans.
There are also some new gems in the line-up like the American folk musicians, Run Boy Run, worldrenowned pianist Andreas Klein and one of Minnesota’s most famous contemporary musicians, Mason
Jennings.
So, take a moment and treat yourself to an in-depth perusal of this brochure. Get excited about returning
favorites and embrace some new possibilities. I invite you to watch the season DVD, which will provide a
sampling of our upcoming performances. If you need a DVD (or if you want us to share one with someone
else) please contact the Reif box office (218) 327-5780. We are happy to oblige.
We hope you enjoy our Encore of Favorites.
Sincerely,
Reif Center President

Whether or not you are a fan of Southern Gospel music, the sweet harmonies and emotion of the Liberty Quartet are sure to
win you over to the genre. Based in Boise, Idaho, this troupe of male voices is rich in sound and spirit. Liberty Quartet currently
averages about 150 performances a year — from churches and nursing homes to large conventions and festivals. They have
shared the stage with popular groups such as Gaither Vocal Band, Legacy Five, Greater Vision, the Booth Brothers, the Hoppers,
the Isaacs, the Collingsworth Family, and many others. Their music bridges all generations, bringing enjoyment to traditional
and contemporary audiences. All proceeds from this concert will benefit the Reif Renovation Fundraising Campaign thanks to
the generous underwriting support by Dave and Marlyce Cutsforth.
The Reif Center has long been a stage for nationally and internationally touring performers. But August 22, in celebration of
Myles Reif’s birthday, we open our stage to support talent that lives in our own community. It’s our 5th Annual Top Ten Talent
Search! Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place – and the audience will help select the winner.

When the King sends his three sons to find their brides, two return with fair ladies. The last returns with... A FROG?! In this hip
adaptation of a classic Russian tale, storyteller, musician, poet and one-of-a-kind artist, David Gonzalez, plays every role. Two
outstanding musicians weave one of Prokofiev’s classics with an original jazz-funk score, and a stunning backdrop of live video
projection and moving images by painter Wassily Kandinsky add additional drama. Filled with comic sparkle, The Frog Bride
with David Gonzalez is a “ribbiting” coming-of-age story.

German-born pianist Andreas Klein has distinguished himself as a dynamic and compelling performer with a command of a
wide range of tonal colors and imaginative interpretations. The New York Times declared him “A fascinating artist with all the
indispensable qualities: temperament, taste, touch, tone, the four Ts of pianism,” and “A pianist who makes silences sound like
music.” Klein’s career as orchestra soloist and recitalist has taken him to the world’s most prestigious venues and gained him
critical acclaim in major cities from Berlin to Damascus.

High impact harmony — that’s what Great Northern Union (GNU), an auditioned men’s a cappella chorus based in the
Minnesota Metro, brings to every performance. Founded in 1985, GNU has grown in mission, size and quality, currently
boasting a membership of over 90 singers. Their pedigree of excellence and tight four-part harmonies earned them a silver
medal at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Chorus Competition, taking second by a margin of only .2 percent.
Performing a range of music their concerts are full of energy and technically near-flawless. Joining them on stage for a few
numbers will be the Grand Rapids Area Male Chorus and the Itasca Community Chorus.

Well-known for his simple yet catchy melodies, intimate lyrics, and distinctive voice, Mason Jennings could easily be described
as one of the most popular artists on the contemporary music scene in Minnesota. Having just released his 12th album, Always
Been, Jennings is more in touch with his ambitions than ever, “I started making music because music saved my life when I was
little—it was something I could go to and always have a feeling of connection,” he says. “Above all else, I want to make sure I
always remember that trying to give other people that sort of feeling is the major purpose behind what I’m doing.”
Star of books, movies and an award-wining PBS show, the inquisitive and lovable monkey, Curious George, brings us another
fun-filled adventure! All–You-Can-Eat Meatball Day comes just once a year and George’s friend, Chef Pisghetti, usually serves
a big crowd. But Phinneas T. Lightspeed and his speedy Meatballs O’Matic machine has foiled his feast! A despairing Chef
Pisghetti vows to cook no more. Eager to help his friend, George swings into action, ready to take the matter all the way to the
world-famous Golden Meatball Contest in Rome, Italy!

Experience the chivalry, majesty and brotherhood of Camelot as Lerner and Loewe envisioned it in one of theater’s most
legendary musicals. This four-time Tony Award® winning show depicts the legend of King Arthur who rules his kingdom with
new ideals and brings peace to a troubled land. But when the beautiful Queen Guinevere and dashing Sir Lancelot, Arthur’s
most trusted knight, give in to their passion for one another, their dishonor threatens to destroy Camelot! Never has this story
of passion, pageantry and betrayal been more captivating. The celebrated score includes the classics If Ever I Would Leave You,
The Simple Joys of Maidenhood, and the title song, Camelot.
The unique sound of Run Boy Run is rooted in the traditional music of the Appalachian South. In recent years, bands like Nickel
Creek, Crooked Still, and others have revived a sense of innovation in traditional American music. Run Boy Run continues
this journey into music that is dynamic, orchestral, and overflowing with beauty. Run Boy Run exists in the tension between
tradition and frontier. Three strong female voices weave a spectacular tapestry of sound. Award-winning fiddle cuts a path for
a tightly formed rhythmic front. Every arrangement is – at it’s core – beautiful.
Founded in 1967 by J. Robert Hanson ‘51, the Concordia Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble composed of 75 student
musicians from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Currently under the direction of maestro Foster Beyers, the orchestra
prides itself on a long history of regional and international travel. In May of 2014, the ensemble toured to Israel and Palestine,
performing in Bethlehem, Ramallah, I’billin and Jerusalem. This concert will feature two faculty soloists: violin
instructor, Sonja Harasim and vocal instructor, Lucy Thrasher.
The work of Minnesota-based modern dance company, Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT), stands apart for its vast
emotional and intellectual range, and stunning visuals. Sometimes powerful, sometimes witty, this company’s unique vision
has been hailed as theater for the heart and mind. Presenting Walking, Singing, and Other Habits on the nature of distraction
and happenstance; an episodic series about sinuous moments and missed chances entitled Tales from the Book of Longing
and Joy, an autobiographical solo, which branded Pimsler “the Woody Allen of modern dance” by the New York Times. Among
their many honors, SPDT have twice been presented and commissioned by the Guthrie Theater, The Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts and The American Dance Festival. Internationally, SPDT has performed in Canada, Europe, Israel, Taiwan,
Russia, Bermuda, China, and Mexico.

Ellis Island was the gateway to America — a land of opportunity for some, a land of exclusion for others. 5,000 immigrants a day
passed through this “Island of Hope, Island of Tears.” Packed into the steerage of steamships, they left their homelands with
few possessions but a wealth of hope, promise, and music. Steerage Song is a musical kaleidoscope of their journey to America.
Steerage Song premiered in concert form at the Fitzgerald Theater in 2011; creators Peter Rothstein (a Grand Rapids native) and
Dan Chouinard have continued to develop the docu-musical, blending the songs of 20 countries of Old Europe and the rhythms of
Tin Pan Alley into a moving, fully-staged, new musical.

It’s impossible to crown any one performer as country music’s biggest star, but Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and Johnny

a string of hits, including Your Love Amazes Me, Standing on the Edge of Goodbye, I Think About It All The Time, Change My Mind,

rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time. During the late 50s and early 60s, the Trio enjoyed
unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame, while influencing the musical tastes of a generation. Through changing
times, the Trio has played on, remaining popular for a simple reason: great songs that sound as good today as the first time you
heard them. And 56 years after Tom Dooley shot to the top of the charts, the Trio is still on the road thirty weeks a year, bringing
back all the great memories and making new ones.
Stanley Lambchop is just like everyone else. That’s the problem. For Stanley, life is TOO normal. He wants to travel the world, do
something amazing, something no one’s ever seen before. Careful what you wish for, Stanley! One night, the bulletin board on
the wall above Stanley’s bed comes loose and falls - right on top of Stanley! The next morning, Stanley Lambchop wakes up flat.
Not just a little flat...really, REALLY flat! In a whirlwind musical travelogue, Stanley - the ultimate exchange student - explores
the globe and learns that heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

Legendary in the Bluegrass genre and called a “mandolin virtuoso” with “perfectly silken harmony” Doyle Lawson together
with his band, Quicksilver, have recorded 40 albums and earned multiple Grammy, Dove, ICM, IBMA and SPBGMA Award
nominations. They are seven-time winners of IBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year. Lawson is reigning SPBGMA Mandolin Player of
the Year, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver are the reigning Inspirational Country Music Association (ICM) Vocal Group of the
Year, crowned in October 2012, on the heels of Lawson’s induction into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame that
September.
The Zodiac Trio enjoys an international concert schedule that spans three continents and presents an eclectic repertoire that
mixes contemporary with the traditional. Formed in 2006 at Manhattan School of Music, the trio earned the great honor of
becoming the first American group, and the only ensemble with a wind instrument, to enter the esteemed Ysaÿe
Quartet Chamber Music program at the Paris Superior Conservatory. In its relatively short history, the Zodiac Trio
has managed to achieve a level of recognition on the international chamber music stage, rarely bestowed upon an
ensemble of such untraditional instrumentation.

As the Reif prepares to break ground for renovation, the Commonweal Theatre of Lanesboro, Minn., one of the nation’s best
interpreters of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, presents a fitting finale: Ibsen’s The Master Builder. First published in 1892,
The Master Builder is about architect Halvard Solness, who despite personal tragedy (including the death of his two sons) has
risen to the top of his profession. With the entrance of Hilda Wangel, a young woman whom he met as a child ten years ago,
his life acquires a new focal point, one that will mean the end of him.

In a forest somewhere near you, there is a band of brothers seeking to rid the land of evil and return hope to the poorly treated.
They are lean, mean, trained justice fighting machines. Armed with whatever comes their way, nothing is as it seems in this
Sherwood Forrest, but one thing is for sure . . . no rogue is safe!
Join internationally acclaimed Visible Fictions for a silly and unexpected take on the classic Robin Hood. Come prepared to
unleash your imagination as two actors, and a surprising stash of props, take on a multitude of characters. (Look out rich folks,
your piggy banks may never be safe again!)

Known for their creative, visionary and contemporary take on a classical art form, the James Sewell Ballet (JSB) delivers
another highly-appealing performance — Guy Noir: The Ballet. Inspired by the segment on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home
Companion, the neo-story ballet has garnered national appeal as one of JSB’s most entertaining works. It has been applauded
for its spectacle of characters, costumes and music; and it features narrations by Keillor himself, as well as music by A Prairie
Home Companions’ Rich Dworsky and The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band. The familiarity of the Guy Noir: Private Eye character is
certain to make this ballet resonate with Greater Minnesota audiences.

Reif Dance celebrates the end of another successful class year with their annual Spring Show. Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Modern
students, young and old, come together for this story-themed production. With past performance titles such as Alice in
Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and Little Red Riding Hood and the Storybook Mysteries, you can understand why Reif Dance’s
family-friendly productions are a delight to audiences. Always a mix of fabulous costumes, great music and exceptional talent—
we couldn’t imagine a better season finale than our Reif Dance Spring Show!
