Parent Forums
Our annual Parent Forums commence next Monday. Parent Forums are an opportunity for all parents to hear about new programs within our school
and be updated on what is happening at SSP. For the agenda, dates and times of the Forums please see above. You will need to send back your
“tear off” slip by Friday 22 May 2015 for attendance at the Forums or, alternatively, you can email Reception on [email protected] telling us
which one you will be attending. Attendance will be recorded at the Forums, with this information going to the class teachers.
At least one member from each family Kindy thru to Year 6 are expected to attend the Forum.
Staff Car Park
Parents are reminded not to park in the staff carpark areas. The areas in junior and senior car bay are clearly signposted staff only. Thank you.
No Right Turn on Prendiville Avenue
Parents are also reminded to adhere to the “No right turn” rule when turning onto Prendiville Avenue as this causes major traffic build ups. Again, we
thank you for your co-operation in this regard.
No Parking on Footpaths
Once again, parents are reminded not to park on footpaths or in the disabled car parking bays unless you are the holder of an ACROD parking permit.
SSP Quiz Night
Our major fundraiser for the year is our quiz night on Friday September 4 at the Currambine Hall. Tickets will go on sale early next term.
The fundraising committee is busy sourcing prizes to make it a huge success. We are asking our school community for any donations of prizes to
assist us on this fundraising venture. Donations could include:
Vouchers

gardening items
gourmet food hamper items various hamper items
If you are able to assist by donating items, please leave them at the front office. Thank you in advance.
Lost property
Many children and parents have reported that jumpers and tracksuit tops have gone ‘missing’ in recent weeks. Please check your children’s clothing

Dear Parents/Carers
Helping our kids to manage the stress of everyday challenges promotes resilience and helps them develop
a strong sense of self. Here are five tips from Michael Gross (Parent Educator and Author) to help you along.
Warm Regards

Helping Kids to Leapfrog Difficulties
Whether it's going to school for the first time, making new friends or even going to school camp, children often experience difficulties that they need to
overcome.
Children's resilience is fostered when they overcome problems and manage unpleasant social situations such as teasing or going into new situations.
Protecting kids from challenging experiences robs them of chances to learn, develop and grow.
Here are five great parenting ideas to help kids leapfrog their difficulties:1. Frame correctly: Frame the difficulty as a challenge rather than a problem. Kids take their cues from their parents so the frame of 'challenge' gives
kids something to rise to rather than be overwhelmed by.
2. Coach kids: Talk kids through their challenges, give them ideas to cope and manage. Consider rehearsing some skills or language that they may
need.
3. Show confidence: Children generally meet their parents' expectations so make sure your expectations are realistic, positive and supportive of their
feelings.
4. Give kids a chance: Allow kids to approach challenges in their own ways without constantly checking on them. Your nervousness is definitely
catching.
5. Celebrate success: Even if they were partially successful, such as they went to school camp for two out the three days, then praise their efforts.
They've got a great building block for next time.
The attitude and approach of parents and teachers will determine how successfully children and young people meet and overcome many of the
hurdles they meet. That attitude needs to be courageous, sensitive and hopeful that your child will meet, and overcome with assistance, all the
challenges they will meet

Parent Workshop: Sensory Processing
On Thursday, 30th April Kate Saraga (Occupational
Therapist) presented a Parent Workshop on Sensory
Processing.
Over 30 people attended the workshop and Kate talked and
demonstrated various techniques to parents and caregivers
on how the difficulties with sensory modulation may often
result in social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. She
spoke on how it can impact upon academic learning, social
interactions and self-esteem. It was fun and informative and
she even got some people up to dance!
On Saturday afternoon members of our School Board along with
other community groups had the privilege of being invited to
have afternoon tea with the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.
The event was attended by our Chair, Amanda Mulligan and Vice
Chair, Carmel Riley and Father Darek (pictured left). You will be
pleased to know that the Prime Minister left the event with a
copy of our St Simon Peter Strategic Plan in his pocket and an
open invitation to morning tea with the children at our school.
