The early 20th century saw the region develop into a popular tourist destination, a theme that continues today. The area features a unique combination of picturesque countryside, hometown charm and more than 50 lakes for recreation and enjoyment. As you begin to explore this area, don’t miss the 755acre Hidden Lake Gardens, the Walter J. Hayes State Park, Cherry Creek Winery and many more hidden treasures from golf courses to trails to antique and unique gift shops. The Historic Brick Walker Tavern, one of the first tourist attractions in the area in the 1920s, offers opportunities to discover the early days of stagecoach travel and trace the development of US-12, known as the U.S. Heritage Trail. Stagecoaches have long given way to automobile and motorcycle aficionados who travel the road taking in the natural beauty of the area for a pleasurable Sunday drive or an extended trip of exploring. A short distance down the road is the hard-to-miss 1,400-acre Michigan International Speedway, the State’s largest sporting venue. Thousands of race fans flock to the track each summer to enjoy NASCAR and ARCA series racing on the two-mile super speedway. Other events at Michigan International Speedway include the Michigan Wine & Beer Fest, Faster Horses Festival, Childrenz Challenge, Tough Mudder, the MHSAA Cross County Meet and the Spirit of America Blood Drive. Heading north on M-50 leads you to the “Heart of the Irish Hills,” downtown Brooklyn, a cozy little town nestled between three lakes and featuring a town square-like setting with a cupola in its center. The entire Irish Hills area encompasses parts of two counties (Jackson and Lenawee), as well as Onsted, Tipton, Somerset Center, Manitou Beach Village, Napoleon, Norvell, Cement City, Clarklake, and more. Unparalleled water sports, fishing and hunting opportunities exist throughout the Irish Hills, making the area a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels. A variety of accommodations exist from local hotel properties to a plethora of camping experiences, resorts and cottages along the miles of lakes. With over 50 lakes to enjoy, there is always something to do in every season. Whether you are shopping, antiquing, backpacking, hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, golfing or heading out to take in the arts and entertainment, travel to the small town area of the Irish Hills to experience great big fun. ATTRACTIONS 4 Irish Hills Resorter Dan & Sam from Old Irish Mill Old Irish Mill You can call him a dreamer…or you can call him a thorough businessman. Daniel Ross, along with this wife Samantha, walked into the “old Ford Plant”, which he has now named the Old Irish Mill, for the first time on June 13, 2012. He always thought it would be a great place for a restaurant, but since stepping into the property, purchasing it, doing tons of research, meeting with multiple professionals, and gathering community opinions and support, that vision will soon be a reality. But this property will not just hold a restaurant according to Ross’s plans. Anchor tenants include: Henry’s Irish Grill, Danny Boys Irish Pub, Sam’s Dam Cafe, Duffy’s Irish Import Store, Blarney Bakery, Emerald Island Meat & Cheese, and Raisin Hell Action Park. The venue will host numerous events throughout the year, including an Irish Festival, car shows and running and biking events. Although there will be plenty of entertainment options at the mill, the main focus will be the Brooklyn Borough. The goal is to make this a farmers market that is one of the most popular and recognizable in the country. The community has been kept informed of each step along the way via The Brooklyn Exponent and Old Irish Mill’s Facebook page. Ross is also willing to share information with anyone, has provided tours of the building and speaks publicly to groups when the opportunity presents itself. The next stage in the process is the hiring of Kincaid/Henry Building Group. The first few steps are the application for Historic Preservation and getting the architects identified. They have also brought on Sam Short to consult with them on all the food/beverage options they will have at the Old Irish Mill. Dan and Samantha Ross hope to be ready to break ground by late summer, early fall, 2015. 5 Irish Hills Resorter Summer 2015 Schedule of Events 2015 Sunday, May 24, 10-2 p.m. Farmers Market Opening Day Sunday, May 31, 10-2 p.m. Farmers Market ATTRACTIONS/ACCOMMODATIONS MAY Sunday, May 31, 2-4 p.m. Walker Wheels Base Ball Game vs. Royal Oak Wahoos •Historic Tours •1840s Tavern •19th Century Barn •Hewitt House •Picnic Area •Sunday Farmers' Market JUNE Wednesday, June 3, Wednesday, June 17, 10-5 p.m. Walker Tavern 2-3 p.m.Nature Historic Site Opens to the Wednesday at Walker Public (Wed.-Sun.) Legend tells of an Indian princess who long ago was drowned in the lake by an evil spirit named Michemanetue. Consequently, it was referred to as The Lake of the Evil Spirit or Devils Lake, as we know it today. • Evans Lake was discovered in 1824 by a Quaker surveyor from New York named Musgrove Evans. After establishing Tecumseh, Evans located a site for a water-powered mill at the east end of town. On horseback he followed the water source to the north and came upon this picturesque lake, naming it after himself. • Dewey Lake was named by Francis Albert Dewey. Resort bookings are up, and millions will enjoy exotic vacations in the months to come. While discretionary spending is increasing, some individuals and families continue to take a conservative approach to their finances, and that approach extends to how they spend their time off. Many are still embracing “staycations,” in which families forgo travel in favor of staying home. Staycations may not be as exotic as trips abroad, but there are several ways that families can make their staycations enjoyable and memorable. • Invest in your home or lifestyle. Instead of bankrolling a trip overseas, channel those funds into improvements for your home or yard to create a relaxing atmosphere you can enjoy year-round. Install that pool or landscape the backyard to make it feel like a tropical paradise. Coasting across the water of a lake or ocean is an enjoyable pastime, so repurpose your vacation funds to buy a boat or some jet skis that you can enjoy throughout the warmer months. • Become a tourist in a your hometown. Chances are you have never experienced the sights of your hometown the way a tourist might. Plan a few days when you can act like someone visiting the Irish Hills for the first time. Go to Mystery Hill to experience the wonders of gravity. Take in a race at Michigan International Speedway. Seek out historical markers along US 12 such as the An Gorta Mor monument next to St. Joseph’s Shrine. • Look for hidden gems. Many businesses and attractions offer fun classes. Visit www.IrishHills.com and click on the calendar page for up-to-date do- it-yourself fun. • Dine out a few nights. Vacations often entail eating out, especially if meals are not included in a traditional vacation package. Use your staycation as the opportunity to dine at local restaurants you have yet to visit. Indulge the kids one night and put them in charge of choosing the meals. Forget those diet plans for a day or two and savor that triple-scoop ice cream cone. If the cost of dining out has you concerned, select restaurants that offer coupons in community mailers or value packs. • Read the newspaper or community bulletin. Chances are you can find a number of entertaining and low-cost activities sponsored by your town or other organizations close to home. Fireworks displays, movies under the stars, boat tours, and fairs are just a handful of the fun events that may be coming soon. • Turn off electronics. Take a break from some of your devices during your staycation. By doing so, you will be less likely to fall into your daily habits and more likely to make the most of your time to rest and relax. 20 Irish Hills Resorter Summer 2015 www.IRISHHILLS.com RETAIL The IRISH HILLS is made up of many small communities… from villages to lake communities…all unique in their own way. Gas - Groceries - Beer - Wine - L iquor Lotto - Game L icenses Citizen of the 24 Irish Hills Resorter Summer 2015 Matt Schepeler Year By Sammie Lukaskiewicz Michigan International Speedway When I think about the good in our community – what makes it strong and special – I think of our hometown newspaper. There’s nothing like a newspaper to demonstrate the power of storytelling – both the good and bad – facing our community. In our 24/7 media environment, a world filled with Twitter, Facebook, iPhones and iPads, that can be difficult. Matt Schepeler, who has been at the helm of The Exponent the past 25 years, is the epitome of good storytelling … and a good story. He dabbled in the business as a youth when his parents owned the newspaper for 30 years from 1961 to 1991. A 1979 graduate of Columbia Central High School, Matt moved to Montana for a year to live with his older brother and work as a pressman. I’ll bet he has some stories to tell. He returned to Brooklyn and worked at the Brooklyn IGA before joining the Air Force in 1981. He completed his basic training in Texas, and traveled to Colorado, California and Okinawa, Japan. At his father’s request, Matt returned to the family business in 1985. And six years later, Matt, along with his brother Kris Schepeler would purchase the newspaper. That’s a great story. Matt served on a number of committees locally. He was president of the Board of Directors of the chamber of commerce, and served on its board for a number of years. He PHOTO COURTESY CORI B PHOTOGRAPHY Matt Schepeler and Sammie Lukaskiewicz, BIHCC Board Director, Michigan International Speedway. also served on the Brooklyn development committee. There is no bigger cheerleader in Brooklyn than Matt Schepeler. Last August, Matt was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Following several weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, he and his wife Renay were given the news that Matt was cancer-free in December. Now that’s a good story. For community newspapers, stories take on many forms. Local newspapers bring people together. From covering community events to telling the stories of local residents, hometown newspapers tell people what they need to know to feel connected to one another. These stories can educate, they can incite and they can inspire. Matt can’t always expect the voices in local newspapers to agree, but by asking questions and writing about issues of importance to the people in our community (and letting him have a say in a story or opinion column once in a while) community papers – and Matt — provide an important service. Matt’s is a good story … So let’s help him write the next chapter as Citizen of the Year … Shady’s Business Tap Room of the Year By Matt Schepeler Shady’s Tap Room at 110 N. Main Street in Brooklyn has been named the Brooklyn-Irish Hills chamber of Commerce Business of the Year for 2015. Described as “a traditional pub for all to gather, converse and enjoy,” the establishment has become an anchor for downtown Brooklyn, creating a spark of nightlife in the community by providing a place where friends and family can grab a cold one after a long day or a sandwich and soft drink for lunch. When introducing Shady’s as Business of the Year, board director Bill Fetters of Woodstock Wine and Cheese noted that when considering what business to name, officials considered what the business has brought to the community, how they present themselves and how they are received. “While Shady’s is relatively new, just going on three years now, they have already proven to be a reliable business,” he said. “By offering the craft beers they do, they have tapped into, forgive the pun, a growing and progressive market that is dear to my heart. “Their business offers a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere that makes people want to sit, stay a while.” Fetters noted that their menu “makes people want to come back for more” and that they are open in hours “in the evening that people in downtown Brooklyn that others haven’t taken advantage of in quite some time.” He noted that this brings people to town to see what else is going on downtown without being a nuisance.” Fetters added that proprietors Pat and Brenda Collins have joined the chamber and been PHOTO COURTESY CORI B PHOTOGRAPHY Bill Fetters, right, BIHCC Board Director and owner of Woodstock Wine & Cheese, presents the award to Brenda Collins and Colin Flinn. active in the events and given back to the community on multiple levels. “We wish them long and continued success.” When accepting the award Brenda Collins noted that “we enjoy everyone and the community has wrapped their arms around us to make us who we are today.” She added that “if it wasn’t for my amazing management team that created the staff we have, we wouldn’t be who we are.” But while Brenda may be modest in receiving accolades, it cannot be denied that her vision turned a building that had become a problem downtown into a huge asset not only as a locally owned business generating revenue, but for the entire community. It was only a few years ago that the building was nearly condemned by the village, but she saw what it could be, and many dollars and a lot of elbow grease later, they opened their doors, showing a beautiful remodel. While Pat Collins admits that Brenda is the visionary, he accepts the humble title of “official beer taster,” and his friendliness permeates the atmosphere of the pub. Shady’s Tap room is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Thursday, Friday, Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. To learn more, visit Shadystaproom.com or, better yet, stop in for a sandwich and beverage of your choice.
