Welcome to the IRISH HILLS of Michigan!
2
ATTRACTIONS
The history of the Irish Hills
dates back to the 19th century as
a stopping point during the
five-day stagecoach trip between
Detroit and Chicago. The early
20th century saw the region
develop into a popular tourist
destination, a theme that
continues today. The area features
a unique combination of
picturesque countryside,
hometown charm and more than
50 lakes for
recreation and
enjoyment.
As you begin
to explore this
area, don’t
miss the 755acre Hidden Lake Gardens, the
Walter J. Hayes State Park,
Cherry Creek Winery and many
more hidden treasures from golf
courses to trails to antique and
unique gift shops.
The Historic Brick Walker
Tavern, one of the first tourist
attractions in the area in the
1920s, offers opportunities to
discover the early days of
stagecoach travel and trace the
development of US-12, known as
the U.S. Heritage Trail.
Stagecoaches have long given
way to automobile and motorcycle
aficionados who travel the road
taking in the natural beauty of the
area for a pleasurable Sunday
drive or an extended trip of
exploring.
A short distance down the road
is the hard-to-miss 1,400-acre
Michigan International Speedway,
the State’s largest sporting
venue. Thousands of race fans
flock to the track each summer to
enjoy NASCAR and ARCA series
racing on the two-mile super
speedway. Other events at
Michigan International Speedway
include the Michigan Wine & Beer
Fest, Faster Horses Festival,
Childrenz Challenge, Tough
Mudder, the MHSAA Cross
County Meet and the Spirit of
America Blood Drive.
Heading north on M-50 leads
you to the “Heart of the Irish
Hills,” downtown Brooklyn, a cozy
little town nestled between three
lakes and featuring a town
square-like setting with a cupola in
its center. The entire Irish Hills
area encompasses parts of two
counties (Jackson and Lenawee),
as well as Onsted, Tipton,
Somerset Center, Manitou Beach
Village, Napoleon, Norvell,
Cement City, Clarklake, and more.
Unparalleled water sports,
fishing and
hunting
opportunities
exist throughout
the Irish Hills,
making the
area a popular
destination for outdoor
enthusiasts of all skill levels.
A variety of accommodations exist
from local hotel properties to a
plethora of camping experiences,
resorts and cottages along the
miles of lakes.
With over 50 lakes to enjoy,
there is always something to do in
every season. Whether you are
shopping, antiquing, backpacking,
hiking, camping, fishing, hunting,
golfing or heading out to take in
the arts and entertainment, travel
to the small town area of the Irish
Hills to experience great big fun.

Dan & Sam from
Old Irish Mill
Old
Irish
Mill
You can call him a dreamer…or
you can call him a thorough
businessman. Daniel Ross,
along with this wife Samantha,
walked into the “old Ford Plant”,
which he has
now named
the Old Irish
Mill, for the
first time on
June 13,
2012. He
always
thought it
would be a
great place
for a
restaurant,
but since
stepping into
the property,
purchasing it,
doing tons of
research,
meeting with
multiple
professionals,
and gathering
community opinions and support,
that vision will soon be a reality.
But this property will not just hold
a restaurant according to Ross’s
plans.
Anchor tenants include: Henry’s
Irish Grill, Danny Boys Irish Pub,
Sam’s Dam Cafe, Duffy’s Irish
Import Store, Blarney Bakery,
Emerald Island Meat & Cheese,
and Raisin Hell Action Park. The
venue will host numerous events
throughout the year, including an
Irish Festival, car shows and
running and biking events.
Although there will be plenty of
entertainment options at the mill,
the main focus will be the
Brooklyn Borough. The goal is to
make this a farmers market that is
one of the most popular and
recognizable in the country.
The community has been kept
informed of each step along the
way via The Brooklyn Exponent
and Old Irish Mill’s Facebook
page. Ross is also willing to
share information with anyone,
has provided tours of the building
and speaks publicly to groups
when the opportunity presents
itself.
The next stage in the process
is the hiring of Kincaid/Henry
Building Group. The first few
steps are the application for
Historic Preservation and
getting the architects identified.
They have also brought on Sam
Short to consult with them on
all the food/beverage options
they will have at the Old Irish
Mill. Dan and Samantha Ross
hope to be ready to break
ground by late summer, early
fall, 2015.

IRISH HILLS
The Irish Hills is known for its rolling hills, acres of
woods, scenic routes and history. Did you know that
you can bike, walk, tour with an off-road vehicle and go
horseback riding through these miles and miles of
trails? Hidden Lake Gardens, The Buffalo Ranch and
Bundy Hill each gives you a unique experience in
exploring and traveling the Irish Hills.
Bundy Hill Offroad- With more than 350 acres of
wooded trails, steep hills and mud- Bundy Hill has
everything from wild to mild
when it comes to getting
off-the-road, from side x side
racing to 4 x 4 night tours
through the park under the
full moon. There is an event
that the whole family can get
excited about. New to the
wheeling world? Don’t want
to get left behind, or just
want to spend a day out
with the family? Bundy Hill
located west of the corner of
US 12 and Hwy 127 just
outside the Irish Hills have
rentals and tours by the
hour. Visit their website at

The Buffalo Ranch- The
Daniels Family purchased
the 240 acre ranch in 2007.
Located in Hanover,
Michigan The Buffalo Ranch
offers guided tours of the
wooded trails by horseback.
Horses range from very
gentle for those new to
riding to spirited horses for
the seasoned rider. Other
activities include feeding
one of the 25 buffalo
roaming the ranch, guided
wagon rides, zip lining and
bunk house stays. For more

Hidden Lake Gardens is celebrating their 70 year
anniversary this year. What began as a simple dream
has become an enduring and evolving living testament
to the auras of nature’s seasons. Just off M50, it has
its own hidden treasures among the 755 acres. Paved
trails carved in nature give way to the opportunity to
tour in your own vehicle, travel on bike or walk on foot.

their own small community.
Some of the lakes feature

Irish Hills to enjoy some of the
best fishing,
boating and

One of the
resorts is
Eagle Point

Hideaway Cove Log Cabins is

Evans Lake and has some of
the best customer service
around. These beautiful log
cabins are a family oriented
resort with paddleboats and
kayaks for your use as well as a
raft and 130 feet of docking for
fishing or relaxing. They are
only a short driving distance to
some great Irish Hills
restaurants and amenities.
Clearwater Lake Resort is

We at Brick Walker Tavern are preserving our
historical integrity while giving the community an
opportunity to share in its grandeur.
We provide a unique facility for lodging and your next
special event in the beautiful Irish Hills, Michigan.
LODGING
The largest bedroom,
which was called the
caretaker's room was
originally four small
bedrooms.
In fact, Brick Walker
Tavern was originally
48 rooms. It had
24 rooms when
restorations started
taking place, now it
features 5.
EVENTS
The grand ballroom
originally had a plaster
ceiling. During
restorations it was found
that leaving the beams
exposed gave the room a
classic look and larger
feel. The beams were
then covered with
cherry wood.
KITCHEN
USE AVAILABLE
The island counter in
the kitchen is made
from a compartmentalized grain holder from
the old Stagecoach
Stop. It is topped with
wood from a shuffleboard court.
We are now booking events for the Brick Walker Tavern and Barn,

CAMPING
YMCA
storer camps
Emerald Award
‘gem of the community’
By Annette Dupuie
Sacred Touch Massage Therapy
The YMCA Storer Camps located on the
shores of Stoney Lake in Napoleon is one of
the hidden gems of the Irish Hills. From
offering trail rides, hosting a women’s wellness
weekend or opening up their camp
to the Girl Scouts, they find many
ways to utilize their facility. The
outdoor school, summer camps
and Camp Catch-a-Rainbow bring
children and families from all over
the state, all year-round. The
specialized activities that are
offered at camp consist of
canoeing, kayaking and sailing, a
climbing tower, ropes course and
an archery/pellet range. You can
also ride horses, pet the llama or
feed the ducks while you stay in
one of their 4 (56 person) lodges.
If you are feeling like you want to
disconnect a little more, they have
a rustic option as well. Tying
everything together is the choice
to be green! The dining hall is solar powered,
they have a zero energy house on the
property and the entire camp is self-sustaining
for their livestock all year-round. What a gem
we have in the Irish Hills, check out their
website at www.YmcaStorerCamps.org.

As immigration into the
newly-christened Michigan state
territory reached its peak, a small
knot of Irish immigrants, some
seeking new life in the United
States, others fleeing the ongoing
Potato Famine of 1846, called a
small portion of northern Lenawee
County home. The rolling hills and
crystal lakes, it is said, reminded
them of their home country and
they acquired that tangible

Location, Price & Staging . . .
these are the three keys in how we sell real estate.
The market continues to improve but it is important to remember that our area is still in recovery mode and we need to go
the extra mile to get the most for your home. Your home is your product and you are trusting us to market and sell that product.
It is our job to evaluate what the market will allow for (Price) in your area (Location) and then go to work making your product
the best version of itself (Staging). Being Accredited Staging Professionals means that we have the training, tools and are willing
to put in the time and effort required to properly stage your home in hopes of bringing a strong sale price. Often we are able to
stage the crucial areas of your home at no additional cost.
We also have an array of furniture and accessories available when needed.
Additionally, we have a team of professionals that we have come to trust and love that assist when we need a little extra help.
We will work with you to come up with the most effective strategy for selling your home and then we will manage
the process from the beginning, right to the closing table.

• The Devils Lake name is part of local
folklore that has been passed down for

the lake by an evil spirit named

referred to as The Lake of the Evil
Spirit or Devils Lake, as we know it
today.
• Evans Lake was discovered in 1824

establishing Tecumseh, Evans located
a site for a water-powered mill at the

followed the water source to the north
and came upon this picturesque lake,
naming it after himself.

Recovery from the recession
that began in 2008 has sparked
renewed interest in vacation
travel. Resort bookings are up,
and millions will enjoy exotic
vacations in the months to
come.
While discretionary spending
is increasing, some individuals
and families continue to take a
conservative approach to their
finances, and that approach
extends to how they spend their
time off. Many are still
embracing “staycations,” in
which families forgo travel in
favor of staying home.
Staycations may not be as
exotic as trips abroad, but there
are several ways that families
can make their staycations
enjoyable and memorable.
• Invest in your home or
lifestyle. Instead of
bankrolling a trip overseas,
channel those funds into
improvements for your home
or yard to create a
relaxing atmosphere you can
enjoy year-round. Install that
pool or landscape the
backyard to make it feel like
a tropical paradise. Coasting
across the water of a lake or
ocean is an enjoyable
pastime, so repurpose your
vacation funds to buy a boat
or some jet skis that you can
enjoy throughout the warmer
months.
• Become a tourist in a your
hometown. Chances are you
have never experienced the
sights of your hometown the
way a tourist might. Plan a
few days when you can act
like someone visiting the Irish
Hills for the first time. Go to
Mystery Hill to experience the
wonders of gravity. Take in a
race at Michigan International
Speedway. Seek out
historical markers along
US 12 such as the
An Gorta Mor monument
next to St. Joseph’s Shrine.
• Look for hidden gems. Many
businesses and attractions
offer fun classes. Visit
www.IrishHills.com and click
on the calendar page for
up-to-date do- it-yourself fun.
• Dine out a few nights.
Vacations often entail eating
out, especially if meals are
not included in a traditional
vacation package. Use your
staycation as the opportunity
to dine at local restaurants
you have yet to visit. Indulge
the kids one night and put
them in charge of choosing
the meals. Forget those diet
plans for a day or two and
savor that triple-scoop ice
cream cone. If the cost of
dining out has you
concerned, select restaurants
that offer coupons in
community mailers or value
packs.
• Read the newspaper or
community bulletin. Chances
are you can find a number of
entertaining and low-cost
activities sponsored by your
town or other organizations
close to home. Fireworks
displays, movies under the
stars, boat tours, and fairs
are just a handful of the fun
events that may be coming
soon.
• Turn off electronics. Take a
break from some of your
devices during your
staycation. By doing so, you
will be less likely to fall into
your daily habits and more
likely to make the most of
your time to rest and relax.

Matt
Schepeler
Year
By Sammie Lukaskiewicz
Michigan International

When I think about the good
in our community – what makes
it strong and special – I think of
our hometown newspaper.
There’s nothing like a
newspaper to demonstrate the
power of storytelling – both the
good and bad – facing our
community. In our 24/7 media
environment, a world filled with
Twitter, Facebook, iPhones and
iPads, that can be difficult.
Matt Schepeler, who has
been at the helm of The
Exponent the past 25 years, is
the epitome of good storytelling
… and a good story.
He dabbled in the business
as a youth when his parents
owned the newspaper for 30
years from 1961 to 1991.
A 1979 graduate of Columbia
Central High School, Matt
moved to Montana for a year to
live with his older brother and
work as a pressman. I’ll bet he
has some stories to tell.
He returned to Brooklyn and
worked at the Brooklyn IGA
before joining the Air Force in
1981. He completed his basic
training in Texas, and traveled
to Colorado, California and
Okinawa, Japan.
At his father’s request, Matt
returned to the family business
in 1985. And six years later,
Matt, along with his brother Kris
Schepeler would purchase the
newspaper. That’s a great story.
Matt served on a number of
committees locally. He was
president of the Board of
Directors of the chamber of
commerce, and served on its
board for a number of years. He

Matt Schepeler and Sammie Lukaskiewicz, BIHCC Board Director, Michigan International Speedway.
also served on the Brooklyn
development committee. There
is no bigger cheerleader in
Brooklyn than Matt Schepeler.
Last August, Matt was
diagnosed with Lymphoma.
Following several weeks of
chemotherapy and radiation
treatments, he and his wife
Renay were given the news that
Matt was cancer-free in
December. Now that’s a good
story.
For community newspapers,
stories take on many forms.
Local newspapers bring people
together. From covering
community events to telling the
stories of local residents,
hometown newspapers tell
people what they need to know
to feel connected to one
another.
These stories can educate,
they can incite and they can
inspire.
Matt can’t always expect the
voices in local newspapers to
agree, but by asking questions
and writing about issues of
importance to the people in our
community (and letting him have
a say in a story or opinion column once in a while)
community papers – and Matt —
provide an important service.
Matt’s is a good story …
So let’s help him write the next
chapter as Citizen of the Year …
Shady’s
Business
Tap Room
of the
Year
By Matt Schepeler
Shady’s Tap Room at 110 N.
Main Street in Brooklyn has been
named the Brooklyn-Irish Hills
chamber of Commerce Business
of the Year for 2015.
Described as “a traditional pub
for all to gather, converse and
enjoy,” the establishment has
become an anchor for downtown
Brooklyn, creating a spark of
nightlife in the community by
providing a place where friends
and family can grab a cold one
after a long day or a sandwich
and soft drink for lunch.
When introducing Shady’s as
Business of the Year, board
director Bill Fetters of Woodstock
Wine and Cheese noted that
when considering what business
to name, officials considered what
the business has brought to the
community, how they present
themselves and how they are
received.
“While Shady’s is relatively
new, just going on three years
now, they have already proven to
be a reliable business,” he said.
“By offering the craft beers they
do, they have tapped into, forgive
the pun, a growing and
progressive market that is dear to
my heart.
“Their business offers a
pleasant and comfortable
atmosphere that makes people
want to sit, stay a while.”
Fetters noted that their menu
“makes people want to come
back for more” and that they are
open in hours “in the evening that
people in downtown Brooklyn that
others haven’t taken advantage of
in quite some time.” He noted that
this brings people to town to see
what else is going on downtown
without being a nuisance.”
Fetters added that proprietors
Pat and Brenda Collins have
joined the chamber and been

active in the events and given

“We wish them long and
continued success.”
When accepting the award
Brenda Collins noted that “we
enjoy everyone and the
community has wrapped their
arms around us to make us who
we are today.”
She added that “if it wasn’t for
my amazing management team
that created the staff we have, we
wouldn’t be who we are.”
But while Brenda may be
modest in receiving accolades, it
cannot be denied that her vision
turned a building that had become
a problem downtown into a huge
asset not only as a locally owned
business generating revenue, but
for the entire community. It was
only a few years ago that the
building was nearly condemned
by the village, but she saw what it
could be, and many dollars and a
lot of elbow grease later, they
opened their doors, showing a
beautiful remodel.
While Pat Collins admits that
Brenda is the visionary, he
accepts the humble title of “official
beer taster,” and his friendliness
permeates the atmosphere of the
pub.

MEDPLUS AFTER HOURS WALK-IN CLINIC
212 S. Main Street — Brooklyn, MI 49230
Columbia Medical Center, opened in 1982 by Gene E. Kielhorn, D.O., provides board certified family medical care not only for residents of Jackson
County and surrounding areas, but for some patients as far away as the Upper
Peninsula. Dr. Kielhorn was joined by William Leppert, D.O., in 2002 and they
moved to their new office shortly thereafter.
Both Dr. Kielhorn and Dr. Leppert are graduates of Michigan State university College of Osteopathic Medicine and are Board Certified in Family Practice.
Nicholas M. Kielhorn, M.D., came to the practice in October 2010. A graduate of Medical University of the Americas based in Massachusetts, “Dr. Nick”,
as he is known to his patients, completed a Family Practice residency at Munson Hospital in Traverse City, MI in July of 2010.
Columbia Medical Center offers full service health care for your entire family, from pediatrics to gerontology, with on-site digital x-ray, digital mammography, bone density testing, and lab services. They are accepting new patients

Every year the Taste of the Irish Hills event brings more and more
guests to the area! Ticket holders have the weekend to get their
bite of the Irish Hills. Each participating restaurant and pub gives
samples of their menu and offers other specials throughout the
weekend. 2015 brought almost 450 tasters to the Irish Hills pubs &
restaurants. Ticket holders received a Taste of the Irish Hills
commemorative pub glass, St. Patrick’s Day goodies and a chance
to win some Irish Hills garb finding Lucky the Leprechaun. This
year an AfterTaste event, sponsored by the Old Irish Mill, brought
ticket holders to a special Fireworks Show, more tastes and live
music by The Metros.
