The Evolution of Critical Media Literacy Third Annual Conference Bone Student Center Illinois State University Saturday, March 21, 2015 8:00a.m. – 4:00p.m. #CMLC2015 1 Welcome Message from the Associate Dean Welcome to the Third Annual Critical Media Literacy Conference and to Illinois State University. We hope you will enjoy your time on our campus as you learn about the impact media has on our lives. This conference highlights the need to promote critical media literacy to eliminate social inequalities and foster participatory democracy during the 21st century. The theme for 2015 is The Evolution of Critical Media Literacy and its foci are past, current, and future trends in critical media literacy. The keynote speaker is Dr. Shirley Steinberg, Professor of Youth Studies at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. She is also Founding Director of The Werklund Foundation Centre for Youth Leadership in Education, which gives her the opportunity to provide outreach to schools, corporate partners, and the fine arts to benefit young people. Dr. Steinberg is known as a teacher, speaker, author, and editor as well, and her passion for providing a voice to our youth is evident in many parts of the world. Four strands of research follow this conference on critical media literacy: (1) the connection between library sciences critical media inquiry, (2) educational foundations, approaches to examining media in an interpretive, normative or critical method, particularly virtual/online, (3) communication, civic engagement, scholarship and critical media literacy, and (4) questions and issues related to shifting definitions of literacy, critical media literacy, and potential new intersections of inquiry This conference is an opportune time to examine the impact mass media has on society and to propose strategies to assure that it serves as a tool to promote democracy and social justice. I hope that your research and resulting discussions contribute to the advancement of knowledge, and I thank you in advance for your scholarly contributions and for making this year’s conference a success. She was the Founding Director and Chair of The Werklund Foundation Centre for Youth Leadership in Education, and Professor of Youth Studies at the University of Calgary. She is the author and editor of many critical pedagogy, urban and youth culture, and cultural studies books. She is the founding editor of Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education, and The International Journal of Youth Studies. She is the Managing Editor of The International Journal of Critical Pedagogy. The cofounder of The Paulo and Nita Freire International Project for Critical Pedagogy, she is also the organizer of The Critical Pedagogical Congress.
