SUMMER SCHOOL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 2015 KINDER SUMMER CLUB ELEMENTARY SUMMER CLUB JUNIOR SUMMER CLUB SENIOR SUMMER CLUB MANDARIN IMMERSION PROGRAM PRE-IB DIPLOMA COURSES KINDER SUMMER CLUB (Ages 4 - 6) Kinder Creative Language Skills This course has a focus on alphabet recognition, sounds and early reading and
writing. Classes aim to allow the children having fun with computer games,
themes, stories and crafts while developing their literacy skills. The class is
suitable for students of all language backgrounds. Kinder Sports Kinder Sports is a program of energetic fun! Lessons are based on the
development of gross motor skills with rolling, jumping, and games. Our
young participants will be working on hand eye coordination, foot eye
coordination and cross motor coordination - all through play Kinder ESL This course is primarily developed to motivate and encourage kindergartners
to speak English and to interact effortlessly in the classroom. Kinder ESL will
offer a wide range of fun based activities, games, puzzles, and quizzes, all of
which will help children learn new English vocabulary (e.g. days of the week,
months, seasons, and basic conversation skills.) Kinder ESL will also consist of
phonic activities to develop a child’s reading abilities. This might include
educational songs, crafts or games. Creative Kinder In Creative Kinder, we explore the creativity of your child using science and
art concepts. Your child will be able to explain Kinder science concepts; and
to make it more fun, your child will make toys and crafts (exploring the artistic
ability of your child) related to the science they explore that day. We will
explore how the world works; how things grow; how we make toys; why we
cook and bake; how different colors come about and many other activities. ELEMENTARY SUMMER CLUB (Ages 7 - 10) Elementary Creative Language Skills This course is designed for children who already have basic reading and
writing skills in English. It aims to provide children with frameworks for
creative writing and expression by introducing different genres of writing
through fun and interactive sessions. Children should be native English
speakers or able to use English fluently as appropriate for this age. Elementary Sports The children will be engaged in a variety of activities designed to improve
locomotive skills, fitness, body control and spatial awareness. Some of the
activities, such as gymnastics and athletics, are individual pursuits whereas
others, such as ball games and adventure challenges, require cooperative play. Elementary ESL This course will look at all the main skill areas of English language
development, while targeting specific weaker areas in each student’s
communication skills. Attention will be focused on vocabulary building,
reading comprehension, written expression and English speaking ability. Fun Science Camp Students will learn about science, meet new friends, develop new skills, and
work with a qualified science teacher to make discoveries about the world. As
scientists, we are constantly curious about why things happen so let us
embark into a realm to make the unknown known, and to answer questions
through hands on activities. Creativity with Computers (laptop provided by the school) This class allows students to discover the fun and creativity in animation. It
exposes students to the production of interactive computer animation in a
creative and dynamic environment. Apart from equipping students with the
knowledge in the latest animation technology, the workshop also aims to draw
out students’ imaginations and creativity.
Highlights: ✓ Discovering the world of interactive animation and websites ✓ Creating high impact animation that captivates the target audience ✓ Acquiring skills in developing user friendly interactive e-book, e-game
and other creative avenues ✓ Exploring the combination of art theories in the digital world. Students will be taught effective techniques and advised on design aspects to
creating a user-friendly interactive e-book, e-game and other creative
avenues. Students will also be able to explore the combination of art theories
in the digital world. Drama Drama trainers will adopt story theatre form to develop the students with the
ability to story tell and act out the story with performance forms in a fun and
dramatic setting. Story theatre involves a group of students taking turn to
learn to narrate (story tellers) and act out (actors) the drama within the story.
The training will also provide a convenient, viable and effective tool for
language learning and to develop the students’ ability and confidence in
speaking, presenting and responding through drama. The modules are: 1.

JUNIOR SUMMER CLUB (Ages 11 - 14) Junior Intensive English This 4-week course is designed for students who are interested in significantly
improving their English language skills and/or have applied for admission to
ISS. Students will be developing their reading, writing, speaking and listening
skills in English in this intensive literacy building experience. The teacher will
work closely with students to develop an individualized plan for literacy
development. Classes will utilize the small study group setting and resources
around Singapore to build English competency. Creative Visual Arts In this programme, students will be exposed to basic understanding of Core of
Art Forms of Drawing, Painting and Sculpting. This programme will equip
students with appropriate techniques when producing an art piece through
levels of activities and experiences. With the guidance of highly qualified
artist, students will be guided to create murals, wire sculptures and traditional
cultural arts such as batik paintings. Junior Creative Writing Students will learn to write about interesting events and actions in a
chronological order. The essential elements of a short story will be covered:
Plot, Characterization, Dialogue and other aspects of the writer’s craft.
Students will read short stories and then discuss why some engage and others
do not. Students will discuss the effect of the language and the writer’s
techniques. Highlights: At the end of the course, students will grow in confidence in their writing and
reading of short narratives. Students will also submit a portfolio of their
completed work, drafts and a compilation of vivid phrases and paragraphs for

group at all times. Mandarin Summer Immersion Program-Includes Travel to ISS’ sister school
in Beijing, PRC This new 4-week course is geared toward students who have an interest in
significantly improving their writing, speaking and reading in Mandarin. The
course will feature two weeks of intensive Mandarin instruction on our
Paterson Road Campus to be followed by 2 weeks of complete immersion at
BISS, ISS’ sister school in Beijing. In Beijing, students will learn about Chinese
culture and visit important sites throughout the city, all while continuing their
study of Mandarin. The school will arrange for housing for students in China
and flights for all students. All students in this course must arrange for a visa
(at their own cost) for entry into the People’s Republic of China. By signing
up for this course, parents/guardians agree to pay the course fee in addition
to any costs related to travel (to be determined at a later date). Pre-IB Diploma Courses All our IB Diploma summer courses are written and taught by highly qualified
and experienced IB Diploma teachers. The courses are designed to prepare
students for the academically demanding IB Diploma Programme (DP). These
courses are ideal for students who are looking for extra support or subjectspecific skills. For some students, attendance and satisfactory completion of
IB Diploma summer courses form one of the conditions imposed by ISS for
successful entry into the IB Diploma Programme or IB Diploma Course
Programme in Grade 11. Pre-IB Skills: This summer school course is an essential foundation for study
within the IB Diploma or IB Diploma Course Programmes. It will teach you how
to get organized, work efficiently and help develop essential skills to excel at
this level. The first section focuses on skills such as listening, note-taking and
reading efficiently as well as referencing consistently and correctly. The
second section's emphasis is on producing a clearly defined thesis statement
which will then culminate in a research project using the skills listed. You will
prepare a presentation and examine different styles of IB essays. Pre-IB Mathematics: Students in this course will review and study many of the
topics found in the Presumed Knowledge part of the IB Diploma Mathematics
Standard Level (SL) curriculum. This will include skills in Algebra,
Trigonometry, Functions, and Statistics. This course is specifically aimed at
students entering the IB Diploma or IB Diploma Course Programme. Pre-IB English Language: Students in this course will enhance their language
skills and review many of the topics found in the Presumed Knowledge part of
the IB Diploma Language curriculum. Students will practice writing skills,
presentation skills and text analysis. This course is specifically aimed at
students entering the IB Diploma or IB Diploma Course Programme.
