Bishop Hedley High School 6th - 10th July, 2015 Mission Discovery has been devised and founded by Chris Barber and ISSET (an International Space School Education Trust programme) IF YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT, YOU WILL: y Present your idea for an experiment to be carried out in space. y T ake on the role of a real research scientist in a project. Our US partners have a Space Act Agreement with NASA that enables educational projects to be carried out on the International Space Station. y Work with astronauts, astronaut trainers, scientists and NASA leaders! The best ideas for an experiment will be built, launched to the International Space Station and carried out in space. Be there at Bishop Hedley High School, Merthyr Tydfil. You will be assigned to a team to formulate an idea for an experiment that can be done in space. Former NASA Astronaut & Space Shuttle Commander Ken Ham with Mission Discovery students It was great to learn from such inspirational astronauts and experts through Mission Discovery, I had a fantastic time. - Emily Yeomans, Mission Discovery Student INTRODUCING OUR TEAM Mission Discovery introduces you to top level NASA leadership,Space Exploration Scientific Research Steve Swanson - Current Astronaut Steve Swanson is a NASA astronaut and an engineer. Swanson has flown on two Space Shuttle flights, STS-117 and STS-119, and Expedition 39 to the ISS aboard the Soyuz. Steve has also served as a CAPCOM for ISS and Space Shuttle missions. He has logged 643 hours in space and completed four spacewalks totalling 26 hours and 14 minutes. Steve is a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal. Jay Honeycutt - Former Director of Kennedy Space Centre Jay is former Director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre and the former President of Lockheed Martin Space Operations. Jay is an engineer who has had almost unrivalled senior level experience with NASA in the Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and Space Shuttle Space Programmes. He was the head of the team that devised simulations for Astronauts and Mission Controllers in NASA’s Apollo Moon Landings programme. Dr James W. Rice, PhD - Astrogeologist Dr. James W. Rice, is an Astrogeologist with over 25 years of research experience specializing on the surface geology and history of water on Mars. His career includes working for NASA, Astrogeology Headquarters of the United States Geological Survey, the Mars Spaceflight Facility located at Arizona State University and the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory located at the University of Arizona. Dr. Rice is a Co-Investigator on the Mars Exploration Rover Project (Spirit and Opportunity). Chris Barber - Space Educationalist Founder of the International Space School Educational Trust (ISSET). ISSET has been developed to be the UK’s most exciting space educational organization, running programs in the UK, USA, China, Arctic and India. Chris has had extensive careers in finance and education. He is also a Leadership and Organizational Improvement Consultant. This week has been an enlightening and insightful experience for me and I can’t express how brilliant it was to be able to spend so much time with the astronauts. I loved learning all of these wonderful new things. - Kitto Maddrell, Mission Discovery Student In Photo: NASA Astronaut Steve Swanson, Commander of Expedition 40, during a spacewalk on 2007 shuttle mission STS-117. MEET THE ASTRONAUTS Astronaut and International Space Station Commander Mike Foale with Mission Discovery student Astronaut and Space Shuttle Commander Ken Ham with Mission Discovery students Astronaut Yi So-yeon with Mission Discovery student Astronaut and International Space Station Commander Scott Kelly with Mission Discovery winner Astronaut Nicole Stott with Mission Discovery student Astronaut Jean-Jacques Favier with Mission Discovery student THE DESTINATION FOR YOUR IDEA People like me don’t win things like this. - Mahdi Baksh, Student from the winning team, 2012 We have carried out two student experiments on the ISS. The first experiment was to investigate whether slime mould would grow in 3D in the microgravity of space. Slime mould has amazing memory capacity is and can be used to solve complex mapping problems. This experiment revealed that mould grows more vigorously in space than on Earth. The second experiment, investigated the effectiveness of antibiotics in space. Astronaut Koichi Wakata performing our experiment in space, aboard the International Space Station. The results indicate that antibiotics are more effective in microgravity. 8 further Mission Discovery student experiments will be launched to the Space Station in June aboard the rocket SpaceX CRS-7.
