® WALLPAPER AND MORE Window Treatments for Difficult and Specialty Windows Some windows are easy to fit. But certain windows look best with certain blinds. For some suggestions on how to find the perfect blind for your difficult window, we’ve assembled some tips from our decorators. Windows with a View For windows with a view that you enjoy -- such as water, woods, garden, etc. -- select a blind that pulls up tightly, with a small stacking space. (The bigger the stacking space, the more your view is obscured when the blinds are open.) Pleated or cellular shades offer the smallest area. They look very elegant while down and almost disappear from view when raised. Wood blinds have the thickest stack of any blind, making them less desirable in these situations. For more about stacking sizes, see our Stacking Chart. Frequently Opened Windows If the window you are covering is opened regularly, you’ll want blinds that are easy to raise and lower. The Easylift and Easyrise options, available with many of our products, can help you raise and lower your blinds with ease. French Doors Think of a French door as a door with a window in it, and treat it like the rest of the windows in the area. You’ll need a hold-down bracket to prevent swinging or banging when the door is opened or closed. Hold down brackets are available with every treatment except for Vertical Blinds and Sheer Verticals. Sliding Doors Vertical blinds are always a popular choice with sliding glass doors. They can be installed either within the doorframe or over the molding and frame for an outside mount. Another good choice is the Hunter-Douglas Vertiglide® shade, a cellular shade that is turned sideways and glides back and forth. Difficult Access Windows When selecting blinds for high or difficult-to-reach windows, we suggest you order an extra long cord or tilt wand for easier operation. Also, some shades and vertical blinds may be ordered with mechanical remote controls. Large or Wide Windows With larger windows, the weight of the blind or shade may make it difficult to raise or lower. Heavier blinds also put excess stress on the cords, which increases the risk of breakage. We have several solutions to this problem: • Easylift option: a continuous looped cord made of a heavyduty material • Multiple blinds: multiple blinds, each with its own set of controls, mounted on a single headrail. You will need to call us to order this option. • Separate blinds: separate blinds, mounted side by side, with one valance that spans the entire window Skylights Skylights can let in a great deal of sunlight, but they can also be difficult to reach. With a long tilt wand or cord, lightweight and easy-to-install cellular shades offer extra insulation and can be easily opened. You will need to call us to order skylight shades. Quick tip: When choosing a blind for your skylight, ask for side rails. They offer added support. Also make sure you ask for a blind specially constructed for a skylight. Arches Arched windows are notable, attractive and unique. These windows are not as difficult to cover as you may think. We offer several different types of window treatments that can be made to fit your window opening exactly. Cellular Shades are available stationary or operable so you can control the amount of sunlight and privacy you need. Other popular choices for covering arch windows are Pleated Shades, Wood Blinds and Mini Blinds. Quick tip: When ordering an arch that is not perfect (twice as wide as high), a template of your window will be required.
