Happy New Year to all our Kaleidoscope Members!
We had a wonderful Holiday Party once again to close out
2013. Barbara and her Team out did themselves. Each of
us walked away with an adorable handmade Snowman, a
song in our heart and a full stomach.
Now we have a whole New Year ahead of us. Have you
started your list of Quilt's you would like to make, UFO's to
finish or the kits that you forgot about? Maybe it's those
weddings, birthdays, retirements or graduations coming up
that you are thinking of starting a quilt for. Our guild
meetings are a great way to encourage you, to give you
some incentive and to help get the creative juices
going. Our members sharing, guest speakers, workshops,
charity projects, retreats and special events have all been
encouragement enough to keep the sewing machines
buzzing. We are looking forward to another full year of
quilting fun!
See you all on the 15th! Bring a friend to start out our
2014 year.

These raffle gifts have been a fun addition to our Guild
Meetings and events. They have been a nice incentive
for some of us to finish a project, share a project or
bring a friend to Guild. You never know what raffle
tickets will be given out for. Please thank our supporters
for their donation if you find yourself in their shop. It’s
very much appreciated by all!
I was just reading a quilting bulletin-board site (Quiltboard.com) where someone asked “how
many charity quilts do you make each year”? I was amazed at the response to this
question, and to the number of ladies who made 20, 50 and even 100 quilts each year to
donate to a charity. Wow!!
The new year is a time to set goals and aspirations. Dream big! I would like to share what
one very generous lady, who lives in New York, wrote because she inspires me to think big.
Here is what she wrote:
Each year, as one of my New Year's resolutions, I set an amount of square inches that I
want to achieve in charity quilts. This is my third year with this resolution. My first goal was
12,000 sq. inches. Second year was 15,000 and this year it was 20,000. I have already
made more than 24,000 this year. The reason for setting an inch requirement is that I am
not limited to one size. If I set # of quilts, say 20, I could get away with 20 small quilts. So,
instead, I make all size quilts, from double bed to baby. I typically donate to my local Project
Linus because they donate to various recipients--not just babies. I have a huge stash so I
pull the quilts from there. The fabrics are all LQS quality, as I was taught to give what I
would want to receive. Luckily, I can do that with these fabrics. If I didn't use up my stash
(which likely will not occur in my lifetime if I live to be 175), what good would it be? I fully
believe that I must give back to honor what I was given in this life.
In 2013 our Kaleidoscope Quilt Guild donated 92 quilts!!! Hooray for all you generous ladies.
Don’t we have a great group? See you soon.
Happy New Year!!!

News from Down Under by Suzannah Richardson
Last month we flew over to Perth on the western coast of Australia for the
Busselton Ironman Triathlon. After the four hour flight we picked up our
camper van and drove 2.5 hours south to Busselton, located on beautiful
Geographe Bay. Busselton has the distinction of having the longest timberpiled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere and the swim portion of the triathlon
took the athletes down the entire 1.9 km span and back to the shore again. My
husband did very well during the race, improving his time on the 3.8 km swim,
180 km bike, and 42 km run by almost two hours overall.
The day after the race we explored the breweries and wineries of Eagle Bay and
Margaret River, stopping at several breweries, wineries, and a chocolate shop
in between beautiful beaches. One of the highlights was the Canal Rocks, a
really striking rock formation that funnels waves into a canal-like feature. It
was amazing to see the powerful waves crash into the rocks and then calmly
push through the canal. The water was so clear that you could see heaps of
sea life within the canal.
The following day we drove through several gum tree forests and stopped in
Pemberton to check out the famous climbing trees there. They are three trees
that used to be used as fire lookouts, and to climb to the top you use metal
rods fixed in a spiral up the side of the tree. What climbs up must climb down,
and so we decided that just a few rungs up for a picture was enough adventure
for us.

Next we stopped in William Bay National Park and that's when I fell in
love. As we walked down the steps to Greens Pool this amazing scene
was layed out before us. Large waves crashed against the rocks and
absorbed the water's energy to create this incredibly calm pool at the
shore. The water was so clear and had an unbelievable colour and
sparkle. There were a few large boulders in this natural pool that made
the scene even more spectacular. We just couldn't resist taking an
impromptu dip in the beautiful waters here. Such beautiful scenery
already and only halfway through our trip.

The Holiday Season has passed and now we can get down to some
serious quilting. I’m thinking of starting my Christmas projects in June
this year and maybe I’ll get them done! We all enjoyed our Christmas
party and it was a full house. The food, company and music were all
wonderful and I think a good time was had by all.
January brings us Carol Ireland who will give us a Trunk Show on
Wearable Fun. Carol lives in Alpine. Many of you may know her as she
has been teaching quilting at Foothills for the past 12 years and is a
former Home Economics teacher.
February’s meeting speaker will be Linda Anderson who is making a
presentation on Creative Constructing of Art Quilts. There will be a SitN-Sew at Cozy Quilt Shop on February 21st. We will begin taking signups for this at our January meeting.
