As England’s foremost producer of hand crafted
designer tiles, we continue to make our tiles in the
historic city of Exeter, in the county of Devon.
The art of making tiles
Everything we produce is unique and the culmination of generations of
experience from our team of highly skilled artists, designers and craftsmen.
The tiles are produced using fine, quality raw materials and carefully
controlled manufacturing techniques, honed over many years, to create
this beautiful hand crafted Classic Collection.
In the beginning tiles are called ‘bisques’ – blank canvases, bearing nothing
but our name indented on the undecorated flip side. Subsequent changes
involve manufacturing processes such as the application of special glazes
and the addition of hand-painted colours by skilled artists. Some tiles are
then fired as many as three times to achieve the required effects. Due to their
hand crafted nature, the surfaces of the tiles undulate gently, allowing natural
shading to occur. These distinctive yet subtle variations in shade within each
tile, moulding and border give a wonderful impression of depth to tiled areas.
The charm of all things handmade, hand painted or hand finished is that
no two pieces will ever be identical – and that’s the secret of the success
of The Winchester Tile Company.

Our love affair with Delft began in the 16th century when English artists transposed classic

Here’s the next best thing if you would love to keep hens! This beautiful
panel can be installed behind a range cooker or as a feature in its 40 tile
entirety, made up of three hens and a hedgerow. It is available in a hand
finished, full colour panel of 127 x 127mm tiles.
You can also choose to have the hens and/or the hedgerow in a single

You’ll enjoy finding all the birds and butterflies, berries and flowers within this beautiful

A set of fine animal drawings in a naïve style reminiscent of 18th century farm cottages

Choose a perfect leaf and delicately position it before pressing, to create a master
mould that captures the depth of the original. The resulting tiles are then cast from
this pattern and hand painted with delicate colour washes along the veins of the
leaves to highlight their tracery.

Raised Fruit
The backgrounds of these deep-moulded decorative tiles are first glazed on Off White and
then fired. Back from the kilns, the gleaming areas of raised fruits are highlighted or painted
and shaded in soft colours, to further enhance the illusion of depth. Then they are fired again.

William De Morgan was the most important ceramic artist of the Arts and Crafts
Movement and a collaborator with William Morris himself. In keeping with the aims
of their movement, which frowned on mass production, they designed this fish frieze.

Important Information
Colour Variations
The surfaces of Winchester tiles undulate gently, allowing natural
shading to occur. These distinctive yet subtle variations in shade
within each tile, moulding and border mean no two pieces are
ever identical which gives a wonderful impression of depth to tiled
areas, adding to their beauty and charm.
In the USA please follow the recommendations of a reputable
adhesive manufacturer and always comply with the American
National Institution (ANSI) specifications as set out in the
Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation published by the
Tile Council of America.
There may also be subtle shade variations between the background
colour on decorative tiles and their matching field tile.
How Many Tiles Will You Need?
Before fixing tiles it is important to lay them out in good light
to ensure that any shade difference is evenly distributed.
Some of our glazes are subject to crazing, in particular Soft
Yellow, Marine Blue and Deep Turquoise, this is an inherent
part of our tiles and adds to their rustic nature.
When used in wet areas crazed tiles should be sealed with an
inpregnator to stop moisture penetrating the body of the tile
and causing discolouration.
Dimensions
All dimensions shown throughout the brochure are nominal;
actual dimensions for individual tiles may vary from these figures.
Installation
When grouting, use a finely sanded grout to avoid scratching the
soft glazes. For full installation instructions, including grouting and
adhesive recommendations, please refer to the Winchester Fixing
Guide available at www.winchestertiles.com.
Once you have decided on your tiles, calculate how many you will
need by measuring the area to be tiled. Grout gap recommended as
3-6mm / 1/8”-1/4”, depending on the look you wish to achieve.

Wash down tiled surfaces with either clean water or a neutral (i.e. not
acidic or alkaline) detergent. Dry off and polish with a dry duster.
Owing to variations in studio lighting and printing inks, the tile
colours shown in this brochure may differ slightly from those of the
actual tiles. Before making your choice it is always advisable to ask
your Winchester supplier to show you samples.
Anthracite tiles contain elements which may discolour if they
are left wet for prolonged periods or cleaned by strong acids or
bleach. We recommend they are wiped down immediately if they
become wet.
Emerald Green, Lime Green, Marine Blue, Moonstone and
Prussian Blue are copper-based glazes which are prone to
discolouration by the very mild acids often found in the home,
for example in lemon scented soaps. To avoid this, wash them
with clean water only and wipe them dry. Tiles in these colours
are recommended for use in dry areas only, do not use the tiles
near the kitchen sink or in shower cubicles.
Tiles used on work surfaces will show signs of wear and surface
scratching. Winchester Tiles are not suitable for exterior use.
Ordering
Limits of Liability
The Winchester Tile Company accepts no liability for the faulty
installation of its tiles. In the case of any claim relating to the tiles
themselves, Winchester Tile’s liability, to the extent permitted by law,
is limited to either the replacement of the product or a refund of the
cost of the product, and does not extend to cover any consequential
loss. Claims must be reported within seven working days from receipt
of the tiles. Tiles must be inspected prior to installation and claims
cannot be considered after the tiles have been installed.

Manche Glasuren sind rissanfällig (dies gilt besonders für Soft Yellow, Marine Blue und Deep
Turquoise). Dies ist eine Eigenart unserer Fliesen und unterstreicht ihren rustikalen Charme.
In Feuchträumen müssen Krakelierte Fliesen mit einem Imprägniermittel versiegelt werden,
damit keine Feuchte in den Fliesenträger eindringen, und Verfärbungen verursachen kann.

Soins Particuliers
Nettoyez les surfaces carrelées a l’eau propre ou bien avec un détergent neutre (ni acide,
ni alcalin). Séchez et lustrez avec un chiffon sec.
Les carreaux anthracites contiennent des éléments qui risquent de se décolorer s’ils sont
en contact prolongé avec l’humidité ou s’ils sont nettoyés avec des acides puissants
ou de la Javel. Nous vous conseillons de les sécher immédiatement après les avoir
humidifiés.
Emerald Green, Lime Green, Marine Blue, Moonstone et Prussian Blue sont des émaux à
base de cuivre qui peuvent être facilement décolorées par les acides très doux que l’on
trouve couramment dans les maisons, par exemple dans les savons parfumés au citron.
Pour éviter toute décoloration, lavez-les à l’eau propre uniquement et séchez-les. Nous
vous conseillons de n’utiliser ces carreaux que dans des endroits secs ; ne les utilisez-pas
près de votre évier de cuisine ou dans votre cabine de douche.

Installation
Beim Verfugen eine feinkörnige Fugenmasse verwenden, damit die empfindliche Glasur

In den USA folgen Sie bitte den Empfehlungen eines namhaften Kleberherstellers und
richten Sie sich stets nach den Vorgaben des American National Standards Institutes
(ANSI), wie im „Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation“ des Tile Council of America
beschrieben.
Wie viele Fliesen brauchen Sie?
Sobald Sie sich für eine Fliese entschieden haben, messen Sie die Fläche aus, die
gefliest werden soll und rechnen Sie aus, wie viele Fliesen Sie für diese Fläche
benötigen. Wir empfehlen einen Fugenabstand von 3 – 6 mm, je nach dem, welchen
optischen Gesamteindruck Sie erzielen möchten.

Spezielle Pflege
Geflieste Flächen entweder mit klarem Wasser oder einem neutralen Reinigungsmittel
(d. h. weder saures noch alkalisches Mittel) abwaschen. Mit einem trockenen Staubtuch
abtrocknen und polieren.
Anthrazitfarbene Fliesen enthalten Bestandteile, die bei Langanhaltender Nässeeinwirkung
oder bei Reinigung mit stark säurehaltigen bzw. bleichenden Mitteln verfärben können. Wir
empfehlen diese Fliesen sofort abzuwischen, wenn sie nass werden.
Fliesen auf Arbeitsflächen werden Anzeichen von Verschleiß und Oberflächenkratzer
zeigen. Winchester Fliesen sind nicht für die Außenanwendung geeignet.

Antraciettegels bevatten elementen die kunnen verkleuren als ze gedurende lange
tijd vochtig blijven of worden gereinigd met sterk bijtende schoonmaakproducten
of bleekmiddel. We raden aan dat ze onmiddellijk worden afgenomen als ze nat
zijn geworden.
Haftungsbeschränkung
Die Winchester Tile Company übernimmt für die fehlerhafte Installation der Fliesen keine
Haftung. Sollte es Reklamationen bezüglich der Fliesen selbst geben, dann beschränkt
sich die gesetzliche Haftung von Winchester Tile lediglich auf den Artikelaustausch oder
Kostenrückerstattung. Weitere Schäden werden nicht abgedeckt. Reklamationen müssen
innerhalb von sieben Werktagen nach Erhalt der Fliesen erfolgen. Fliesen müssen vor der
Installation kontrolliert werden. Eine Reklamation nach der Installation ist nicht möglich.
Emerald Green, Lime Green, Marine Blue, Moonstone en Prussian Blue zijn op
koper gebaseerde glazuurtegels. Dit betekent dat ze kunnen verkleuren als gevolg
van de zeer milde zuren die aanwezig zijn in huishoudens, zoals bijvoorbeeld in
schoonmaakmiddelen met een citroengeur. Was ze alleen met schoon water en droog
ze af om dit te vermijden. We raden aan dat u tegels in deze kleuren alleen gebruikt
op droge plaatsen. Gebruik deze tegels niet in de nabijheid van de gootsteen of in
douchecabines.
Bitte beachten Sie, dass Sie durch die Installation Qualität, Farbe, Textur, Farbvariationen
und Größe der Fliesen akzeptieren.
Tegels die worden gebruikt op een werkoppervlak zijn aan slijtage en krassen
onderhevig. Winchester-tegels zijn niet geschikt voor gebruik buitenshuis.

Kleurvariaties
Het oppervlak van de Winchester-tegels golft enigszins, met een natuurlijke kleurvariatie
tot gevolg. Deze kenmerkende en subtiele variaties in de tint, gietvorm en randen van
elke tegel betekenen dat geen twee tegels precies gelijk zijn, hetgeen leidt tot een
prachtige dieptewerking van het betegelde oppervlak, dat hierdoor mooier en charmanter
oogt. Er kan eveneens sprake zijn van subtiele variaties tussen de achtergrondkleur op
siertegels en hun bijpassende veldtegels.
Voordat u de tegels aanbrengt, is het belangrijk dat u ze uitlegt in een goed verlichte
omgeving, zodat u zeker weet dat kleurnuances gelijkwaardig zijn verdeeld.
Enkele van onze glazuurtegels zijn onderhevig ann gecraqueleerde afwekingen, met
name Soft Yellow, Marine Blue en Deep Turquoise. Dit is een eigenschap van onze
tegels en draagt bij aan hun rustieke karakter.
Als ze gebruikt worden in een vochtige omgeving, moeten tegeltjes met craqueléglazuur
worden geïmpregneerd, zodat vocht de tegels niet penetreert en verkleuringen veroorzaakt.
Afmetingen
Alle vermelde afmetingen in de brochure zijn nominaal. Daadwerkelijke afmetingen van
afzonderlijke tegels kunnen verschillen ten opzichte van deze afbeeldingen.
Aanbrengen
Maak gebruik van een fijn voegmiddel bij het voegen, zodat u de zachte tegels niet
beschadigt. Raadpleeg de Winchester Fixing Guide voor aanbrenginstructies, waaronder
richtlijnen voor het voegen en lijmen. Deze gids is verkrijgbaar bij uw Winchesterleverancier.
Volg in de Verenigde Staten de aanbevelingen omtrent producenten van lijm met een
goede reputatie op en houdt u aan de richtlijnen van de American National Standards
Institution (ANSI), die zijn opgenomen in het Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation, dat

Speciale voorzorgsmaatregelen

Beperkte aansprakelijkheid
De Winchester Tile Company is niet aansprakelijk voor verkeerde installatie van de
tegels. In het geval van klachten ten aanzien van de tegels zelf is de aansprakelijk van

Emerald Green, Lime Green, Marine Blue, Moonstone und Prussian Blue sind
Glasierungen auf Kupferbasis und neigen zu Verfärbungen, die durch die schwachen
Säuren in vielen Haushaltsprodukten (z. B. Seife mit Zitronenduft) hervorgerufen werden.
Sie können dies vermeiden, indem Sie die Fliesen ausschließlich mit klarem Wasser
waschen und anschließend trocken reiben. Fliesen in diesen Farben sind nur für den
Einsatz in Trockenbereichen zu empfehlen, nicht aber in nahe der Küchenspüle oder der
Duschkabine.
