A warm welcome awaits you...
…in the studios, workshops
and galleries along our trails.
We hope you will enjoy meeting
the artists and craftspeople
along three spectacularly
different routes, finding venues
and artworks as diverse as the
scenery you will drive through.
The Skye and Lochalsh Arts and Crafts
Association invites you to discover and enjoy
the same wonderfully inspirational
landscape that is home to so many visual
artists. Some of Europe's most dramatic
scenery and challenging weather patterns
provide the perfect backdrop to your studio
and gallery visits, where you can meet our
artists and craftmakers, discuss their works
and their ideas.
Hopefully you will take home
an original artwork!

trail traits
Travelling our Trails from remote tracks to busy main roads, reveals not only
very different locations but a real diversity of artist and craftsperson. Ranging
from small part-time craftmakers working from home to commercial premises,
they have one thing in common, they offer you a warm welcome.
Artist's or Craftmaker's own Studio - here you can meet the artist or craftmaker in
person, and talk to them about their work. these are often premises attached to or
part of private houses, will have their own display area and are generally not as
definitive about their hours. Some small studios do not have credit / debit card
facilities. if you have a specific artist you wish to meet, a call ahead is always a
good idea.
Artist showing work - an artist specialising in works inspired by the island, but not
living here full-time. Contactable by telephone or e-mail, their works can be viewed
at the stated locations.
Gallery - showing a range of work from several invited artists and craftspeople.
as galleries are resident artist-run, they offer experienced and knowledgeable help
and advice when purchasing works.
Gallery/Shop - commercially run and also keeping regular business hours, they
will combine displays of invited artists work with a range of crafts and gifts from
the island.
Creative Café - nourishment for the body as well as the soul, their range of culinary
delights, from simple home-baking to three-course dinners, complement original
artworks, textiles and literature. Visitor Attraction - open all year round, and seven days in the Summer, often with
an international profile, they will offer full visitor facilities, including on-line ordering
and full international postal service.

PRINT PRIMER
T E C H N I C A L G L O S S A RY
The terminology used in galleries and studios in describing 'prints' can be confusing, and
misleading for the potential purchaser. Here we attempt a simple glossary, courtesy Dandelion Designs
and Phil Gorton Studio.
An Artist Print is a piece of work conceived and executed by the artist, usually made from a block or
plate he/she has hand cut. It is the artist’s own interaction with the potential and limitations of the
medium involved, therefore each print is an original piece of work by that artist. Most of the
methods used limit to a relatively small number the quantity of prints which can be made.
Typical examples of printmaking media are woodcuts, linocuts, screenprints, engravings and etchings.
They all have one common characteristic – the print is made directly from the block or plate, which is
handworked by the artist, then inked and brought into direct contact with paper or fabric. The block
or plate suffers wear during the process and deteriorates, this limits the number of prints which can be
made. Once it is worn out, the block or plate cannot be used further and each individual print is then
hand-numbered and signed. The artist’s image or design is either inscribed, carved, cut into or built up
on the block or plate made from wood, lino, metal or other man-made surfaces, then inked in single or
multiple colours to transfer the design from block to paper by use of pressure. This can be done by
hand burnishing or by use of a printing press. Screenprint is another form of artist print but here the
ink is pushed onto the paper through a fine mesh screen which has been pre-prepared with the design
using either photographic or hand cut stencils. The nature of a print, as a piece of handcrafted original
artwork, means that all are genuine limited editions with numbers governed by the usable print life of
the medium involved or the artist’s choice (which may be for a smaller edition than is possible). The
artist may well also have manipulated the medium or colours to achieve a variation between individual
prints in the edition.
An Artist Proof (A/P) is an early test print, the final print edition may be significantly different due to
further working of the block or plate, but the proof itself is an original work.
Reduction Printing is where the block or plate is reworked and then overprinted on the previous
run(s), usually to add additional colour(s).
A Reproduction is where the replication method is independent of the size and materials/medium of
the original work, does not strictly limit the number of pieces which can be produced and where the
method allows a relatively long production run independent of the artist. Most are open editions with
an unlimited production run and often vary significantly from the original in scale and materials. They
do not affect the artwork which remains as an original. The production method involves making an
image of the original artwork which is then printed, possibly on a commercial press. Although printing
plates wear out, replacements can be prepared using the image of the artwork, and the print run
continued. Typical examples of reproductions are offset litho prints, Giclee prints, laser prints and
inkjet prints. Use of the term ‘limited edition’ in the context of these methods means no more
than that the printer has chosen to limit the print run and could easily extend it or reprint
the original artwork from the existing or new negatives/scans, possibly at a different size or on a
different material.
A Giclee Print is a premium quality computer inkjet print made using pigment and resin inks and
paper of archival standard from a scan or photograph of the original. Giclee refers to the process
method and as in photographic reproduction, is not of a higher quality than archival inkjet.
Photographic Prints - The rise of digital printing has confused the definition of 'prints' as far as a
viewer is concerned like no other art discipline output. Although digital capture cannot use
conventional enlargement, conventional (film) capture can utilise all digital systems to output print
content. Frequently the only difference between two image routes will be at point of capture, either
film, where major decisions are made behind the camera before scanning to a file, or digital capture,
which loads directly to a similar computer file where it can be manipulated. Digital image files, whether
from optical (camera) source, scanner or computer can all print directly to professional quality archival
photographic media using the latest photo-digital laser printers. The images need not be on paper,
picture files can be printed onto super-white polyester, metallic surfaces, canvas (often 3D flush
mounted wallboards) clean vision acrylics and aluminium.
Photo-digital laser prints - Prints onto archival photographic media from an input file or from
conventional negative or transparency (slide). They can appear as straight machine prints with no
manipulation, or as cropped area images with or without colour correction. They are noted for a more
saturated colour image than conventional hands-on enlargements, and can be printed down onto
polyester bases (pure white) achieving high contrast and dramatic colour.
Handprints - Literally printed by hand by the artist / photographer, from film negative or transparency
using a conventional enlarger and processed in wet chemicals, either in trays, tubes or a roller processor.
Photographers printing in this way will have a favourite archival paper ideally suited to the image
making that they specialise in.
Photographic inkjet prints - Digital image files, from camera input or from scanned film controlled in
a computer by an image manipulation programme such as Photoshop (the most popular) can go via the
internet to a photographic output house, or more usually can be printed in the photographer's own
studio using a desktop inkjet printer. Machines vary in output size from A4 through A2, and all can print
smaller than the size given for the machine. Larger units than the A2 are available, but rarely
economically viable for the small independent user. Prints can be classified by the inks and media used,
and the names often given ignored. A Giclee Print, for example, is no better than any other archival
quality inkjet. Archival prints are made using pigment and resin based inks with a lifespan given by the
manufacturer, and premium quality media. Often high gloss prints on premium quality heavyweight gloss
paper will use a final cartridge giving a UV varnish to fully protect the image. The plethora of
multi-cartridge ink systems in use currently allow the photographer a choice of selection to print the
image exactly as required, and many now print down onto specialist matt and semi-matt papers from
independent manufacturers.
ART ASSISTANT
Some general terminology used in our galleries and studios.
Collage (or photographically, montage) - Applied layers of paper, card, found objects or fabrics used to
create textures and add variety to a painting or drawing or to assemble an entire picture.
Watercolour - Water is the carrier for finely ground colour pigment or dye, the resulting paint is water
soluble and comes in a variety of forms, powder, solid blocks, paste or liquid. Traditional watercolour
paints are translucent and layers or colours are overlaid, generally working lightest colours first and
gradually layering with the darker tones. It is usual to work on specialist, often handmade paper.
The term watercolour can equally be applied to any painting made with water soluble paint.
Ink - Finely ground colour pigment or dye is suspended in liquid, this can be water, spirit or acrylic based
and according to type will be either water soluble (non-permanent and liable to fade in
non-archival conditions) or waterproof (permanent).
Oil - Ground colour pigment mixed with refined linseed oil to create a thick, slow drying painting
medium which can be applied by brush or palette knife to give a waterproof and permanent finish.
Paint can be used straight from the tube or thinned with oil or turpentine to give extra fluidity or
transparency. Work can be done on any suitable prepared surface such as strong paper, board or
canvas.
Acrylic - Ground colour pigment mixed with a waterproof poly-vinyl base. Drying time is much faster
than oil paint but it is used in a similar manner. This paint is water soluble in use but is waterproof and
permanent when dry. It can be used thickly or diluted with water or clear acrylic to give added fluidity
or transparency.
Artist Print - An original print, hand-pulled by the artist.
Mixed Media - An original artwork, in the making of which more than one medium has been used.
Any combination of painting, drawing or print can be described as mixed media.
Computer Generated Inkjet - Some artists generate images using a computer as a control system.
Images can be scanned in or generated using specialist software, and assembled on screen.
The resultant image is then printed out, usually by an inkjet or dye sublimation desktop printer. Most
inkjet prints are reproductions of other original artworks created in a different medium and which may
be of a different size to the original. They can be on different types and qualities of paper, card, canvas
and plastic based material.
T E C H N I C A L G L O S S A RY
Pastel - Colour pigment formed into a chalk like stick or combined with an oil base to create a softer
type crayon. Pastels can be used alone on a paper ground or worked over the top of a pre-painted
matt surface.
