Washington, Sr. Scholarship Application Dear Scholarship Applicant: Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of a long-standing tradition with the Nu Beta Sigma Alumni chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. We are currently seeking young men that exemplify the qualities of scholarship that will be honored at our annual NBΣ Scholarship Banquet “Turning the Page: Ushering in a New Generation”. This scholarship is in honor of Bro. Alfred Washington, who on April 1, 1986, became the first African American County Court Judge in Duval County. During his twelve years on the bench he served the needs of the county with distinction by “simply respecting the dignity of his fellow man”, and while he unfortunately passed away at only 57, his impact is still felt in Duval's judicial and general communities. The purpose of the Alfred Washington Scholarship is to reward scholastically high achieving male high school seniors with $500.00 scholarships to apply to their college expenses, and recognize him at our Scholarship banquet. Scholarship is one of the highest ideals of our illustrious organization, and as such it is imperative that we promote this ideal among our high school male youth. We are now accepting applications for the 2015 Alfred E. Washington, Sr. High School Scholarship. In order for you to apply for this application, you must meet the following criteria: - Must be presently enrolled as a high school senior at a high school located in the state of Florida. - Must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA at the time of the application deadline AND at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. - Should be a responsible, supportive, self-disciplined, positive, and energetic individual who is interested in the welfare of education and in the community. - FINALISTS will be notified to attend the banquet & winner will be announced at the banquet. - The winner must attend the scholarship banquet to receive the award, 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2015 - which will be at the Fire Fighter Hall, located at 618 Stockton St, Jacksonville, FL. Washington, Sr. Scholarship, the following rules apply: 1. Must be presently enrolled as a high school senior at a high school located in the state of Florida. 2. Must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA at the time of the application deadline AND at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. 3. Should be a responsible, supportive, self-disciplined, positive, and energetic individual who is interested in the welfare of education and in the community. 4. A total of one scholarship will be awarded. The number of awards is at the sole discretion of the NBΣ scholarship committee. 5. The scholarship will be worth $500 and it is non-renewable. The award will be paid to the school in one payment of $500 at the beginning of the Fall 2015 semester. 6. The scholarship must be used at an accredited college or university. 7. The NBΣ scholarship committee will judge the submitted scholarship applications. Finalists will be selected based on the application and attached documents. The scholarship recipient will be chosen and notified by June 7, 2015. 8. The NBΣ scholarship committee reserves the right to conduct an interview of the finalists. 9. The scholarship recipients will be determined by NBΣ, and it is solely at the discretion of the NBΣ scholarship committee to make the determination of which applicants followed the guidelines as set forth in the application. 10. FINALISTS must attend the banquet, where the winner will be announced. 11. The winner must attend the scholarship banquet to receive the award.
