GONZALES OUT By Brian Reilly Linden Publisher Linden school superintendent Dr. Michael Gonzales’ was terminated-suspended last week by the Linden school board He will continue to draw his $135,000 salary. The action was taken behind closed doors—not all the trustees agreed as Diana Machado voted to keep Gonzales. The other five members voted for his termination. The action was taken following a months-long uproar regarding several accusations, an unsafe school environment at Waverly School, and assertions that Gonzales does not have proper teaching credentials to be the superintendent. Gonzales was in his second year at Linden under contract. The vote and termination may have been inspired by grass roots action by numerous community members who did not like Gonzales’ style— parents of children attending district schools claimed he created a hostile work environment and was responsible for the district missing critical deadlines for important federal funds. Angry loud protesters in April stood in front of the district office along Highway 26 with banners-of-protest demanding that Gonzales be removed. Numerous complaints were filed with the board and speakers stood before the panel asking for Gonzales to be terminated from office. When the trustees emerged from their closed session last week, board president Clay Titus read a statement saying Gonzales had been placed on paid administrative leave indefinitely, adding, “The board is not at liberty to provide further comment.” The board continues to keep silent regarding the uproar about the chief of the district as most personnel matters are conducted behind closed doors, thus eliminating the public from hearing the public’s business. Although very specific closed-door actions are legal, they are certainly not fair to the residents and taxpayers of Linden who are kept in the dark. At 11 pm last week, the assembled audience, who packed the district lobby awaiting the board’s decision—cheered the board’s action. Apparently Gonzales was not at the closed-door session. State law requires the presence of an employee whose employment is being reviewed. It was not known whether or not Gonzales was given an opportunity to respond due to the fact the Linden board kept the meeting closed to the public. T itus did say the board would name an interim superintendent presently. Assorted events led to Gonzales’ late night suspension, including Waverly School principal Lisa Pettis taking medical leave due to “stress from a hostile work environment”; Pettis’ attorney Warren Osgood filed a complaint with the Department of Employment and Fair Housing accusing Gonzales of harassing Pettis; and Osgood cited an- other report by an independent attorney hired by the district that Gonzales harassed Pettis. Linden Elementary principal Sharon Womble also filed a report with the Department of Employment and Fair Housing on behalf of a teacher she supervised that said Gonzales had harassed the teacher. Womble claimed her contract was not renewed for the following school year in retribution for her action. Adding to the uproar, four Waverly School parents complained to the State that the school was unsafe absent a full-time principal (where Pettis worked) after a Waverly student brought a gun to campus. They also claimed that Gonzales does not have the required teaching credentials to be a superintendent. The stormy, short Gonzales’ administration followed one by Dr. Donald Estates of around 20 years after he was promoted from principal at one of the Linden elementary schools. While Estes was in office test scores increased, college-prep programs were put in place, a number of top-notch teachers and principals were hired and new buildings were built (including the performing arts facility) and old structures were improved throughout the district following the passage of voter-approved local bonds. The Estes administration often encouraged an open-door policy and made sure board meeting-packets were distributed to the press and any other citizens. The board was not always easy on Estes. Estes’ 20-year administration was quite unusual for Linden, possibly a record for the district dating back to the 1800s when schools opened in Linden. More about… LINDEN from 10 am-7 pm. Following the retirement of the-late Jack Molini— who was both the superintendent and Linden High School principal—the district had been through a series of shortterm administrators, principals and superintendents and others—many of them chased off by the Old Guard school board members who tended to micro-manage the district. Whether considering clothing, furniture, shoes, home decor and even preferences in lawn and garden design find myself baffled more often than not. Partially this is because I am a firm believer in comfort over fashion. My opinion is simply this: if it isn’t comfortable, if I dislike the color, the style, or it seems like a display rather than functional and “live-able” then what is the point? I began thinking about this sitting here at the Laundromat again and they have decided to spiff things up. As far as I’m concerned they have failed miserably. Walls that were once basic white are now the color of coffee heavy-on-the-cream and a deep, nearly navy, blue. The trim is somewhere between mauve and merlot and they have topped the windows with reddish-orange, tan and white plaid curtains that clash horribly. Of course, the dusty, fake green plants just put on the crowning touch. Fortunately, there is another Laundromat where I can go if all the fashion gets to be too much for me handle. We all know people who have homes that are just plain uncomfortable. I know a couple of friends who have a beautiful home but I always feel as if I should vacuum and scrub my way out the door as I leave. The walls, carpeting, window shades and curtains, kitchen cabinets table and chairs and most of the furniture are all shades of white and maybe a little tan. I feel as if I may be snow blind by the time I leave their house. Everything is so pale and colorless it seems more like an operating room than a home. Another couple I know have a home that is in a great location and has an interesting layout, but “Laurel” has this habit of buying style and decorating type magazines and, rather than plucking out the elements she likes and adapting them to her home, she tries to translate the article precisely from the page to her home. The magazines were saying paint every wall a different shade from the same color group so there are four different shades of green in her kitchen combined with By Micheal A. Guido D.D. black appliances, dark-, cherry, stained cupboards and black marbleesque counters. The result is a dark, dingy looking room even though there is one wall, and half of another, that are nearly floor to ceiling windows. I can’t imagine what it would be like with fewer windows. Going through a doorway you find a room with walls in maroon and built-in school bus yellow cabinets. Her home office is painted in tones from pale peach to deep orange/apricot. One wall and an alcove with her computer and desk are painted deep purple with a carpet the color of bittersweet berries. These are. quite truthfully, some of the ugliest rooms I have ever seen and I shudder to think of living with them daily, but Laurel likes it and since she lives there, that it what counts. Another friend has a penchant for pastels, stencils and keeping the windows covered with shades and curtains at all times. I jokingly refer to her house as “the bat cave” and she laughs along. She confesses that it’s too much trouble to open and close curtains and shades all the time, “so I just leave them closed.” I figure all these folks probably have a similar reaction to my house. They must think, “What is with Kris and that big bird yellow kitchen and what is the deal with just having valances in the living room? Here is the truth. we all have a sense of our own taste. We know what we like and what we don’t. There are colors we love and others we despise. For some form and “looks” are more important than function or comfort. Even if I had all the money I needed to decorate any way in the world I would still keep to comfort over fashion. I’d still prefer uncovered windows and lots of natural light over fancy curtains and lighting tricks. I’d want some bright colors along with some neutral shades and my comfortably casual ideas will never end up in some home decor magazine. That’s all right by me. Anywhere I live there had better be room for a bit of dog hair and a few dust-bunnies. After explaining God’s plan of salvation to him, he asked, “Do you mean that I can actually be saved by faith through grace alone?” “Yes,” I answered. “When you board an airplane, what do the people at the gate ask for?” “My boarding pass,” he answered. “Correct,” I replied. “Your boarding pass proves that you have met the conditions to board the aircraft.” Our “boarding pass” for heaven is our faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible plainly states that “By grace you have been saved through faith, not of your works, it is a gift from God lest anyone should boast.” Placing our faith in God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, as our Savior assures us of our “boarding pass” into eternity with Him. Do you have yours ready? During World War II, a young boy was sent from England to the United States for safety. While crossing the ocean, the ship he was on was hit by a torpedo and he was thrown into the water. A rescue boat came and lifted him out of the water. As they lifted him to safety, his first question was not “Why?” It was “Which way is America?” What an important lesson. All of us have dreams that someone has torpedoed. We have all experienced the feelings of being “lost at sea” at one time or another. When events such as these occur, we have a choice. We can look back in bitterness or look ahead in anticipation. With God, no one or nothing is hopeless. During a difficult time in his life, the Apostle Paul said, “We get knocked down.” He quickly added, “But we get up again and again and keep going!” Our faith in God will increase during the storms of life if we look to Him for His help and strength. The events of life that would overwhelm us will be replaced by “the God of all comfort” Who will wrap us gently in His arms. Linden churches First Baptist Church 17580 E. Baseball Lions bounced from playoffs in double header loss to Escalon By Jay Sorensen Windy conditions keeping most off the waters, but those venturing out are finding the striped bass fishing spotty. Fish are still in the system, but the secret is locating the downstream spawners. Most of the recent catches are schoolies ranging in size from 20 to 24 inches, with an occasional larger fish weighing 8 or 9 pounds. Bait dunkers as well as trollers are finding success as the season wanes. The best lure for trolling are Yo-Zuri’s with a white plastic worm trailer. Striped bass are presently found in the Old Sacramento River, Miner Slough and Steamboat Slough and on the Old Dairy in fairly shallow water. Bait dunkers are using shad, pile worms and blood worms are finding schoolies fishing from the shorelines. On the San Joaquin River stripers have been caught in False River, mouth of Three Mile Slough, the shoals and off the sand bars east of the Antioch Bridge. Several twofish limits reported by field scouts, up to 27 inches in length. The fishing should be fair to good at least two weeks into June. Those interested in sturgeon should work the Pittsburg area in 40 to 50 foot depths on less windy days. The best bait continues to be eel strips, salmon roe and the basic shrimpbaits. Note: King salmon are starting to move into the Delta region. But just a reminder, the in-river salmon fishing doesn’t open until July 16. American shad are now on their annual jaunt into the Delta waterways and migrating pods have been located in the Sacramento River at Freeport, the Brickyards and Discovery Park at the confluence of the American River. On the Feather River the American shad are showing from the mouth at Verona to Star Bend, and farther up river with the best action coming from the narrows at Shanghai Bend. Access for bo ‘ ats and those who wade is from the Garden Highway off Highway 99. Reports also indicate shad are moving into the Yuba River as well. The peak run of American shad will take place in about two weeks. In San Francisco and San Pablo bays, the halibut fishing broke loose with some impressive catches to 22 pounds reported. Some of the better action on the drift took place between the Berkeley Flats and South Hampton Shoals. Boats ara dragging anchovies or live shiner minnows with the average of one fish per rod. Several 3-fish limits reported by field scouts. Striped bass in the 18 to 24-inch category are caught off the Marin Islands and along the shore by Paradise . Fair sturgeon fishing takes place on the minus outgoing tides. Check weather conditons before heading to the big and open waters. Pacific When the wind permits, anglers troliing anchovies are scoring on quick twofish lim- By Craig Anderson The Linden varsity baseball team's tremendous season came to an abrupt and ignominious end recently as the Escalon Cougars won the final two games of the threegame Sac-Joaquin Section Division V semifinal series to advance to the finals. A forgettable first game for Linden ended after five innings due to the mercy rule when Escalon scored 12 runs in the top of the second inning and added two more in the top of the fifth. The Cougars amassed 12 hits - the Lions collected only two - and committed no errors whereas Linden erred twice. Pitchers Shelby Lackey, Chad Krueg, and Manny Robles absorbed the beating, immediately after which the teams prepared for the ultimate third game later the same day. In the third deciding game both teams scored in the second inning and the game was tied heading into the bottom of the sixth when Linden's starting pitcher Justin Giovannoni raced across home plate with the go-ahead run courtesy of Bailey Wright's RBI double. Linden athletes honored Jay Sorensen its of quality king salmon up to 20 pounds or better. The top area the past two weeks is 3 to 8 miles southeast of the Farallon Islands. Partyboats out of Half Moon Bay, Sausalito, Berkeley and Emeryville have been taking their clients out for quick limits of bright chromers in the 12 to 17pound range. Trollers have been working depths ranging from 30 to 65-feet for their fish. Find the krill and drop down for some quick action. Take time to go out and enjoy the great outdoors. Until next tide stay safe. Trout fishing The California Fish and Wildlife have planted most of the higher elevation lakes and streams with catchable-sized trout. All streams are fishable due to extremely low snow melt off. Remember, when fishing for trout, be sure to read the rules and regulations to the area you plan on fishing. Some areas require barbless hooks, fly’s and lures only. Be safe and have an enjoyable outdoor experience. Jay’s best bets Sacramento River (striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish and sturgeon); San Joaquin River (striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish and pan fish); American River (striped bass and American shad); San Pablo Bay (sturgeon); San Francisco Bay (striped bass, halibut and leopard shark); Ocean (rockfish and salmon). 20,210-page tunnel The comprehensive environmental review of Gov. Unfortunately, the good aspect of two outs was counteracted by the two Escalons who reached base but even then, it was the type of game the Linden ace had won throughout the season and it came down to Escalon senior Nathan Chunn at the plate facing the hard throwing Giovannoni. Giovannoni went into the stretch and fired his first pitch of the inning, and the last of his junior baseball season, a pitch that Chunn blasted into right center for a two-run, game leading triple. A wild pitch subsequently plated Chunn for the final 5-3 score. Wright hit a double and garnered an RBI and Nick Lagorio had a double and an RBI to lead the Lions who ended the season with a 23-6-1 record, including a per fect 15-0 Mother Lode League record; Escalon improved to 21-9-1 and moved on to face Capital Christian, a game the Cougars lost with Capital Christian winning the section championship. Scot Moody hired by Stockton East Water District By Craig Anderson Scot Moody is the new general manager of Stockton East Water District and the 48-year old will assume his duties on June 10. Moody replaces former general manager Kevin Kauffman who spent 13 years with the district prior to announcing his retirement in November after which he was retained as a transition consultant until a new general manager was found. Moody comes to the water district with 20 years of experience with the US Navy, reaching the position of Division Officer; he also has eight years of experience in managing water, wastewater, and other facilities in Tracy and Twaine Harte as the general manager of the Twain Harte Community Services District with a budget of $3 million and 13 employees. "Managing the multiple demands of this water district appears to be a good fit to Scot and his background," said Paul Sanguinetti, Stockton East director and vice president. Moody will oversee Stockton East with a budget of $25 million and 36 employees and he said he was "looking to move to a larger district" and to deal with state water issues that affect Stockton East. His salary is in the $136,000 range. Stockton's Municipal Utilities District director Dr. Mel Lytle said he expects the general manager of the water district to help continue the progress being made by the Stockton Areas Water Suppliers." "I think Mr. Moody and I will challenge each other to meet and exceed the expectation of the communities we serve," said John Freeman, recently appointed district manager for the California Water Services Group. Bandon Nakagawa, San Joaquin County water resources coordinator, said he was "impressed with Mr. Moody's accomplishments to date and I'm confident that his proven leadership skills will be effective and beneficial to all Stockton East customers." Moody and his wife Lisa and their two sons Gordon (13) and Parker (9) expect to be moving to the Valley soon. In other Stockton-East business— District debates task order cost, reservoirs filled, director nominated The Stockton East Water District directors were informed by district consultant Kevin Kauffman that a change order for work on the 10 million gallon Finished Water Reservoir project adjacent to the district's drinking water treatment plant on East Main Street will add 14 days to the project schedule. The new final completion date for the project is October 4 and is, Kauffman said, "A no-cost time extension change order with the contractor absorbing the risk of rainy days." The board voted unanimously to approve the change order. However, an amendment to another task order will cost the district $30,565 instead of $47,928 due to Kauffman working with Black & Veatch and the urban contractors to reduce the amount. Director Loralee McGaughey asked about what caused the overage and Kauffman said it was "the result of the contractor's submittal and response to a request for information activities which required additional time and senior staff involvement from Black & Veatch." "Black & Veatch should be responsible [pay for] for any overages," McGaughey said and director Paul Sanguinetti said, "The district shouldn't have to pay for the overage due to Black & Veatch's oversight" which led Kauffman to remind the board that "the amendment has been negotiated with the urban contractors and Black & Veatch and the result of the negotiations allows the district to receive what it wanted and needed and Black & Veatch has agreed to absorb some of the cost." District consultant Anthony Barkett said, "The parties need to move forward in good faith as this decision could affect how the remainder of the project progresses." Director Mel Panizza said that when a project is bid with a "not to exceed" clause the contract amount is finite after which Zolezzi said, "It's necessary to determine if Black & Veatch went above and beyond the original scope of work." Kauf fman said Black & Veatch focused on meeting the deadlines and "didn't pay close enough attention to the budget and additional hours were required by senior and other staff to keep the project on sched u le." "What is the percentage of project completion?" director Andrew Watkins said and assistant manager Jeanette Thomas said, "Substantial completion of the project is at 68 percent." Watkins recommended bringing the overage issue back before the board for review/ negotiation with Black and Veatch upon completion of the project. "It's not necessary to make a decision today, as the outcome may be different when the project is completed," said Sanguinetti. "I agree with this approach," said director Thomas McGurk who then requested a narrative and comparison of the line items/tasks that were in the original contract and the additional work efforts. Water supply in reservoirs Water supply manager Andres Lozano said, "There is 153,008 acre feet in storage at New Hogan Reservoir and 1,357,562 acre feet in storage at New Melones and there are currently 18 irrigators pumping water on the New Hogan System and two irrigators pumping water on the New Melones system." McGurk nominated Director Thomas McGurk was placed in nomination as a member of the board of directors for the Association of California Water Agencies for Region 4 by the unanimous vote of the Stockton East Water District board.
