President’s Message
Sometimes you win,
sometimes you loose. It
was
funny
I
had
practiced threading to
the point I was getting
pretty consistent results
at home, so thought I
was ready for the demo.
For one reason or another, it just wasn't my
night. The next day at home I had no
problem threading the piece of rosewood I
had chucked at the meeting. At least I
hoped you learned something about
threading. There is a good article by Kurt
Herzog in the March Woodturning that
could also help you out.
I want to thank Don Penny, Kat McCall,
Ricky Crewes, Fred and Donna Eversole
and Tina Minahan for helping out at the
Turning a Bowl for Mom/Beads of courage.
Julie Ford told me that they raised $460
selling our bowls. This wa a $135 increase
over last year. She has contacted
Wolfson's to let them know they'll be
getting a check. It makes me proud of the
club when we pull together to do
something good like this.
The AAW is also interested in knowing
when we do something good. Phil
McDonald, ED of the AAW, sent out a
message this morning to say they want to
capture all the charitable things the
chapters do, so I sent them our list - it was
pretty impressive. Thanks to Mark Wood
for all his work coordinating our charity
efforts.
Both Mark Wood and I had our
indoctrinations
into
the
Florida
Woodturning Symposium, Mark for joining
the committee and me for running my first
meeting. We put Mark to work right away
capturing all the action items that came up
during the meeting. Just in case you think
the Committee takes it easy, Mark
captured nearly 40 action items during our
four hour meeting.
We had a chance to acknowledge Read
Johnson and Ron Browning, our two
prior Chairmen of the Committee, for all
their hard work making the Symposium a
success. We also had a chance to
recognize Bob Hunt for all his work. Bob
was a great representative from our club
taking his role on the Committee very
seriously. While he was specifically
charged with overseeing the donations for
the raffle and recently the scholarship and
educational grant program, he also
developed many of the procedures the
Symposium uses and did a great job
improving our auction process.

I just got my final videography assignments
for the AAW Symposium. Hard to imagine
it's only six weeks away. I'm starting to go
through those demonstrations I need to
video and find out what's available for the
other slots. This is the first time I have
looked at this year's schedule in much
detail. I think it's going to be tough to select
how I want to fill in my available rotations.
I'm really excited since I have not seen a
number of the demonstrators before.
I'm working on some new pieces using
some very new surface texture treatments,
at least for me. I can't wait to do a little
more exploring of this avenue, but I had a
lot of fun with puff paint and cup burs.
I think Don Penny was the big winner in
the Tree Alert scramble.

Meeting Notes
We had a small turnout for the meeting
with 21 members.
Liz reminded everyone about the new
library offerings and she would like us to
post some of our work on the club
Facebook page.
Mark talked about the Mother’s Day Event
and how it supported “Beads of Courage”
and reminded us of the Woodcraft Turning
Contest on June 13th. Finally bowls for the
AAW drive are due by June 25th.
Kaye reported that the Safe Harbor
Program was well received by the new
administration and that we should look for
some exciting changes.
Bob ended the business portion of the
meeting with a discussion centering around
the need for us to establish safety rules for
visiting turners performing demonstrations.

Mother’s Day Event
We (Kat, Tina, Ricky, Fred, Donna, Tina,
Julie and I) had a great time turning in front
of Woodcraft for the Mother’s Day Event
supporting beads of courage. We shared
turning tips and lessons, tool talks, great
weather and of course a lot of good
natured BS!
Demonstration
As Ed mentioned he did a demonstration
on threading and while there were some
issues he did a great job of explaining how
it should work – thanks Ed
