June 2015 Volume 15 Issue 5 Northeast Florida Woodturners Association An Affiliate of the American Association of Woodturners – Club Number 130 - jaxturners.org President’s Message I just want to remind all of you that Saturday, June 13th is the Turning Club Show at Woodcraft. This is a great way for us to show off what kind of talent our club has. Bring in any work you want to put into the show to the meeting on Monday. Bring your friends on Saturday and have them vote on your pieces. I want to thank Bernard Ross again for a great wood alert. I hope some of you got a bit of that cherry. I also had a friend take down a big sycamore and save a piece for me, so I'm wood rich again. Bob Hunt and I had a fun day demonstrating our craft to some potential future woodturners. Every year Greenland Pines Elementary School has two days of Arts and Culture at the end of the school year. I've been doing demos for them for the last couple of years, but this year we stepped up things a bit and have two of us there. I like to add a bit of science into demo and try to explain to them the differences between softwoods and hardwoods. Although I've generally had kids of all ages, this year we only had kindergarteners and kids from 2nd grade. I couldn't go too deep into the science with them. That was OK because the loved the demos. As you can see we were making a pretty good mess. The kids saw this as a positive thing, but the teacher whose room we were working in had different sentiments entirely. She couldn't stand it and even had us stop for a minute so that she could remove all her files from a cabinet top and to put the telephone in a trash bag. I'm guessing we won't be in that room next year. I'm starting to get all excited about the AAW Symposium. I know all the people I will video: I know it's hard to video and see what they are doing, but I think there will be some interesting things to learn from them. I've been checking out the rest of the rotations and there are just too many great demos to catch them all. Thanks to Don Penny for last month's demo on coring. I was really interested in knowing how tough it was and how much flexibility you have. Don's demo taught me a lot, but I'm not sure I'm going to jump right out and buy a new coring rig. I'm also prepping for my John C. Campbell Folkschool classes. I should learn next week if there are enough students to hold the class. Meeting Notes We had 23 members and 3 visitors at the meeting and most of the discussions centered around upcoming events. • Bowls for the AAW event to be brought with you to the meeting. • Woodcraft Turner’s Show entries are due by 6/13 Ed spent some time on the Florida Symposium scheduled February 5th – 7th. Registration will open in August. Finally Safety Bob held a great discussion on stressing safety when you are teaching someone to turn. As we all know, bad habits come along fast enough so we need to be diligent in teaching safety and safe techniques to the beginner. Instant Gallery Calendar of Events Demonstration I made some wood chips for the demonstration showing the Woodcut Bowl Saver. We had a discussion about the available systems and their positives and negatives. The truth is, as Ed eluded to, that you would probably need all 3 systems to get everything you want out of bowl coring. This month’s demonstration is on Ergonomics so remember to sit up straight! • Northeast Florida Woodturners Association Meeting – June 15, 2015 at 6:30 PM at the Woodcraft store at Regency.
