P: 604.982.8300 www.jbcc.ca | 21 FITNESS CENTRE A Message from the JBCC Fitness Centre Supervisor Tracy Wakaluk Spring is around the corner and we have so much going on at John Braithwaite and in the Fitness Centre. It is wonderful to see how busy the Fitness Centre has become the last few months. To me, it means people are taking an active approach to leading healthier lives. I am now in my 6th month as the Fitness Centre Supervisor at John Braithwaite and I love my position. I have had the opportunity to meet so many people and listen to their stories as to why they are working out. Whether it is to lose weight, fight against heart disease, relieve stress, fight depression or work towards a race or an athletic event, they are all perfect reasons to be here. The staff at John Braithwaite are committed to helping you achieve your goals and to assist you in your fitness endeavors. I am pleased to announce that along with our Get Started Consultations and Personal Training, we have a wide range of classes being offered in the spring: Youth Weight Training, Early Morning Sweat, First Time Fitness, Foam Roller and more! For more information, please check out the Fitness section of the Guide. The one class I am particularly excited about to be offering at John Braithwaite is MEND. MEND stands for: Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do-it! It is a program for children 7-13yrs, who are above a healthy weight and their families. MEND is not a diet nor is it a weight loss program: It is a program to help families make a step towards leading healthier more active lifestyles. MEND empowers children and families to become fitter and healthier together. The program is funded by Healthy Families BC and supported by BC Parks & Recreation Association and the YMCA of BC & Yukon. It is a FREE program that includes family workshops on health topics followed by fun physical activities for the kids. While the children are busy being active, parents can share their experiences about transitioning to a healthy lifestyle. The program runs twice a week for ten weeks for two hours each session. Post program, graduating families receive free recreation passes to encourage sustained changes. MEND has been developed and tested by some of the leading experts in child nutrition, child psychology and exercise. Parents/caregivers join their children in each session to learn how to choose healthier foods and spend more time being physically active. Research has shown that programs combining behaviour change, physical activity and healthy eating with support for families are more likely to produce long-lasting health benefits. I am truly excited and proud to be a part of such a great program. If your family, or a family you know, could benefit from MEND, please email or call me for more information. 22 | John Braithwaite Community Centre
