In 1855 Gustavus F. Swift borrowed
$20 from his father to purchase a
neighbor’s prized heifer. This humble
beginning evolved into Swift & Company,
one of the most storied beef and pork
companies in American business history.
In 1953 José Batista Sobrinho founded
Friboi Group in central Brazil. When it first
began the slaughter was 5 head of cattle
per day. Over the years, Friboi acquired
several additional plants and in 2004
acquired 50% of BF Alimento. In 2005
Friboi acquired Swift Armour S.A., a beef
producer and exporter in Argentina. Also
in 2005, Friboi Group restructured and
became JBS S.A.
In 2007 JBS S.A. bought Swift & Company
in the US, in 2008 JBS bought Smithfield
Beef Company and in 2009 JBS purchased
a controlling share in Pilgrim’s Pride chicken
company. All three proteins are united under
one roof in Greeley, Colorado.
Today JBS S.A. is the largest animal
protein processor in the world, with
operations in food, leather, pet products
and biodiesel. The company has production
and processing in Brazil, Argentina, Italy,
Australia, USA, Uruguay, Paraguay, Mexico,
China, Russia and Canada. JBS S.A. has
300 production units worldwide and over
142 thousand employees.

Quality Begins at the Farm
Our pork is harvested from high quality pigs
raised by a select group of independent
farmers throughout the Midwestern United
States. A large percentage of our pigs come
from farmers with whom we have long
term contracts, providing us with assured
supply. Our pig farmers must meet specific

production, facility, nutrition and genetic
requirements designed to yield very high
quality and flavorful pork meat. All JBS pig
suppliers must be certified by the National
Pork Board for the Pork Quality Assurance
Plus (PQA Plus) program and all drivers
delivering pigs to JBS facilities must be
Transport Quality Assurance (TQA) certified.
Quality at the Plant
We harvest most of our pigs using CO2 stunning which
is humane and virtually eliminates blood splash. We lock
in the pork meat quality with our deep chill systems
which help us achieve excellent pH and meat color.
Animal Welfare
JBS works with a company which
performs on-farm audits of our
contract farmers. If a critical failure
is identified during an audit the
farmer is required to submit a
corrective action plan. Each
JBS pork pant has a Livestock
Handling Manager who oversees
all aspects of animal handling,
including auditing, program
development and training. Each
manager is Professional Animal
Auditor Certification Organization
(PAACO) certified. In-plant audits are
based on the American Meat Institute
(AMI) Animal Handling Guidelines.
Food Safety
JBS is deeply committed to food safety. Each of our
facilities has completed their annual HACCP reassessment as
required by the USDA FSIS and is in compliance with 9 CFR 417.
JBS’s Food Safety Process consists of Standard Operating Procedures
(SOPs), Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs), Hazard Analysis
Critical Control Points (HACCPs), and validated technology interventions which
are designed to eliminate or reduce pathogens. We use third party audits and
customers’ audits to confirm that our Food Safety Process is working.
