ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS WALK JUNE 15, 2015
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was June 15, 2015. Once
a year communities and municipalities around the world plan activities and programs to share information and spread awareness about
abuse, neglect, and exploitation in later life. This year the JCDOA
sponsored event had over 80 participants , about three times more
than pervious years. A big THANKS to everyone who helped make this
years event successful.

90’s Birthday Celebration–On Friday May 22nd all the residents of Jackson County who would be 90 or
older in 2015 were invited to a birthday Celebration at the JCDOA. Elvis made a special appearance and
was loved by all. We had great fun. Thanks to everyone who made this event possible.

Mr. Ron Aarps is a community volunteer who has
taken on the project of raised bed gardening with
some of our homebound elderly. Mr. Aarps has built
five raised beds and provided the vegetable plants
for each of the beds. The goal of the project is to
provide fresh produce to interested individuals. If
more interest is generated the project will be expanded next year. If you would like to volunteer to
help or know someone that would benefit from this

MEALS ON WHEELS NEEDS VOLUTEERS TO

CAREGIVER EDUCATION SERIES!! Join in on Tuesday July 21st from 2:30--5pm, in the JCDOA Board
Room for an informative presentation as part of
the Caregiver Education Series. Call Ms. Phillips at

Parkinson’s Support In The Mountains will meet the 2nd Thursday
of each month at 3:00 pm. Heritage Room at the JC Department on Aging. The group welcomes persons with
Parkinson’s, their care partners and anyone interested
in learning about the disease. Call 828-586-5494 for more info.
We would like to welcome Gail Cagle to our staff. Gail will
be our new Adult Day Care Coordinator. She is from Jackson County & loves living in the mountains. Gail has 3
grown children and 5 grandchildren under the age of
6. Hiking, reading, quilting, antiquing, and camping are her
hobbies. For the last 30 years Gail has worked in
healthcare in Jackson County and she is very excited for
this wonderful opportunity to work in the Adult Day Care. If
you know someone who might benefit from the Adult Day
Care Program, please give Gail a call at 631-8030. We are
very glad you are here Gail.
The Senior Celebration in Cherokee was an absolute blast. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful food and the
entertainment was out of this world. Needless to say Jackson County won the Fashion Show and would
have won the “most boisterous” had that been an category. Great job everyone!!!

each Tue. at 1pm in
rm.125 at JCDOA.

The Jackson County Senior Center Line Dancers
took their show on the road this month by performing for the Skyland Care Center residents.
The adult day program embarked on their first fishing trip of the year
last month. Our gracious hosts were members and friends of the Fox
family in Pumpkintown. The weather was perfect and every one caught
fish. Several trophy trout were landed by our participants. This is the
third year we have been invited and the best yet. Trophies were awarded to Jack Longnion (biggest fish), John Griffith (best effort), Katie
McLaughlin (most fish). A good time was had by all!
The Quilt Club is diligently working on
their latest project. The above quilt will be
raffled to raise money for United Christian Ministries. If you are interested, we
have room for you. Call 586-5494

the 4th Wed. morning of each
month at 9:15 in the dining hall at JCDOA .

BE ADVISED: If you are in a class or an event that happens after 5pm on Mondays or Thursdays
at JCDOA, you will need to enter through the
Senior Center entrance. All other entrances
will be locked. Ms. Rodi will be available on
Mondays until 7pm and Ms. Cauley will be available on
Thursdays until 7pm.
The PTSD Group will meet in the Board Room at JCDOA
at 5:30pm— Thursday July 2nd and Thursday
July 16th. If you or someone you love has been
affected by PTSD please join us. Together we
can make a difference.
Senior Swap the last full week of each month Bring items you no
longer want and place them on the table for someone else to take. If you see anything that you would
like you can take it. Please make sure all items are
clean and in working order. “One person’s trash is
another person’s treasure”.
The monthly covered dish dinner will be Thursday, July
16th at 5pm. Bring a cookout type dish and join the fun.

Reminder - Tuesday, July 7th 2015 from 8am—
12pm Jackson County Department on Aging will
host a Free Stroke Risk Screening Event in the
Dining Hall. You must pre-register with Melissa
McKnight at 587-8288. The screening will include Blood pressure checks/ Cholesterol
checks/ Glucose checks/ as well as individual health counseling.
