Calendar Notes and Explanations
The WBAIS Board policy states the school should “target” 180 days. While the school calendars 180 days,
snow, city wide events and crises sometimes get in the way of reaching the 180 days. This year we have put
in a cushion of two days for a total of 182 days.
This increase in school days means that there is less room for teacher collaboration days (professional
development/Teacher In-Service days on the calendar). For us to continue to move forward as a learning
organization we have placed four half days on the calendar as a time for teachers to get together and continue
to hone their practice.
Whole Community Orientation Day: This is a day where we ask all parents and students to join us at 10am
in the auditorium. It is not just a time for us to meet as a community and kick off the year, but to share
important information that will make the year run smoothly for all.
September religious holidays: September can be a tricky month when it comes to creating a consistent
calendar, this year is no exception. Between the days of Sept 22nd and 28th, there are four holidays that fall
over five school days. It made sense to close school from the 22nd to the 28th. We will have school on the
Monday the 21st and will be conducting classes as normal (I understand that coming only on Monday seems a
tinge nonsensical, but we need to keep the learning moving forward).
MLK Day: Normally, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an American holiday in which we close. This year we
will hold classes. Being in school means we can utilize the day to celebrate diversity as well as create
consistency in the calendar.
Easter Break & Passover Break: Easter and Passover usually are in proximity to each other where we can
make a “Spring Break” including both. This year, Passover comes very late in the year and having a stretch
from January until mid-April seemed too long. We have broken the two holidays into separate breaks.
Student Led Conferences April 6th and 7th: We plan on running student led conferences the second half of
the year. These normally take more time, but are highly valuable for the learner. Presently we have the 6th
scheduled as a half day of school, but that may change to a full day of school if we find we do not need the
time for conferences.
Memorial Day: We will be holding classes that day. If, by the lucky chance we do not use our extra “snow
days,” we may decide to use Memorial Day as a teacher work day.
