Piccolo Spoleto began in 1998 as a public celebration of Israel’s
fiftieth birthday. It has morphed into a commemoration of
Charleston’s history of more than 300 years of continuous Jewish
settlement. Charleston’s early Jewish history includes a number
of significant American firsts: the first Hebrew Orphan Society,
the first Hebrew Benevolent Society, the first Jew elected to public
office, the first Temple sisterhood, arguably the first Reform Jewish
congregation, and the oldest Jewish cemetery surviving in the
South. Today’s Jewish Charleston includes congregations of all
major denominations, a Jewish Federation, a Jewish day school,
a Jewish Community Center, a Jewish Studies Program at the
College of Charleston, and a soon-to-be-built Chabad House.
