"The Nationalists have claimed Malcolm. The Socialists have claimed
Malcolm. Now, it's time for you Muslims to claim Malcolm... because
he was a believer... he was a believer."
These words were spoken by Betty
Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X to a
prominent American Muslim imam.
Her words address the multiple ways in
which Malcolm X's life and words have
inspired and been mobilized by
numerous constituencies and social
movements. This lecture takes an
ethnographic approach to considering
how Muslims, particularly in the United
States, have answered Betty Shabazz’s
call to "claim Malcolm," and how such
responses speak to how Muslims
globally have articulated Malcolm's
legacy and significance as an ethical,
political, and spiritual figure.
