Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 7th edition , we will cover chapters 2 – 5.
Calculator: A calculator is recommended, it doesn’t need to be a graphing calculator. However, you may
want to get a graphing calculator for future courses.
Attendance:
Roll will be taken each day. You may be dropped from the class if you miss 4 classes. I will also
record and penalize late attendance as follows: The first class there is no penalty. After that, the first
two times you are late there is no penalty. After that, each time you are late I will deduct 3 points from
your grade.
You may be dropped for non-attendance. If you decide that you are not going to complete the
class, it is your responsibility to withdraw yourself. Otherwise, you will receive a grade of “F”.

Tests: We will have 5 tests. I will drop your lowest test score. The 4 highest test scores will be 75%
of your grade. The final exam will be 25% of your grade. Missing two tests is grounds for being
dropped.
Homework: Homework will be assigned each class. I will collect the homework on the day of the test.
Homework will include 2 Mathematica assignments. It is expected that you will do the homework. If
your homework is incomplete, it will reduce your class grade.
Grading:
A = 90% and above, plus handing in the homework
B = 80% and above, plus handing in the homework
C = 65% and above, plus handing in the homework
D = 50% and above, plus handing in the homework
F = below 50%
Class Rules:
1. Attend class, arrive on time, stay until the end, work hard.
2. Turn cell phones off.
3. Don’t leave the classroom until official breaks.
4. Be attentive during lecture. No sleeping in class!
5. Only one person talks at a time.
6. Ask questions. Come to office hours. Email me.
Catalog Description:
Topics in this course include: limits; derivatives of algebraic, trigonometric and transcendental functions; differentials;
graphing; applications; definite and indefinite integrals. Problem solving using a computer algebra system is integrated
throughout the course.
Course Objectives
1) Evaluate limits.
2) Calculate derivatives of algebraic, trigonometric and transcendental functions (also by implicit
differentiation).
3) Calculate derivatives of inverse functions and calculate differentials.
4) Graph functions including asymptotes, local extrema and inflection points.
5) Solve application problems using differential calculus.
6) Calculate definite and indefinite integrals (including the use of the method of substitution).
7) Use computing software for solving calculus problems. .
SLO Statements
1) Students will demonstrate understanding of limits, continuity, and the definition of the derivative of a
single-variable function.
2) Students will find derivatives of single-variable elementary functions.
3) Students will use derivatives to solve application problems involving rates of change and optimization.
4) Students will find anti-derivatives of simple elementary functions and apply them to determining
definite integrals.
5) Students will apply the technique of change of variable to evaluating anti-derivatives.
6) Student will be able to use the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
Cheating: It is illegal to give or receive aid during a test. Any student who cheats will get a
zero on the test, and the test score will not be dropped.
