White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books SATURDAY, AUGUST 1 1 P.M. MAIN LIBRARY HICKS AUDITORIUM Join anthropologist/documentary producer Jonathan Gayles, Ph.D., and historian Julian Chambliss, Ph.D., for a screening and discussion of the award-winning documentary, White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books. Through interviews with prominent artists, scholars and cultural critics along with images from the comic books themselves, this film examines the degree to which early black superheroes generally adhered to common stereotypes about black men. From the humorous to the offensive, early black superheroes are critically considered. The documentary addresses more than 40 years of representation of black men in comic books. Characters in the documentary include Lothar, Whitewash Jones, Waku, Prince of the Bantu, Gabriel Jones, The Black Panther, The Falcon, John Stewart, Luke Cage, Tyroc and Black Lightning.
