Join anthropologist/documentary producer Jonathan Gayles,
Ph.D., and historian Julian Chambliss, Ph.D., for a screening
and discussion of the award-winning documentary, White Scripts and
Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books.
Through interviews with prominent artists, scholars and cultural
critics along with images from the comic books themselves, this film
examines the degree to which early black superheroes generally
adhered to common stereotypes about black men. From the
humorous to the offensive, early black superheroes are critically
considered.
The documentary addresses more than 40 years of representation of
black men in comic books. Characters in the documentary include
Lothar, Whitewash Jones, Waku, Prince of the Bantu, Gabriel Jones,
The Black Panther, The Falcon, John Stewart, Luke Cage, Tyroc and
Black Lightning.
Free and open to the public.
