The Artist is Absent

YOOX Group presents
The Artist is Absent
A short documentary on Martin Margiela
Premiering at 2015 Tribeca Film Festival
The most elusive figure in fashion, known for never giving an interview, nor for being photographed, is
the protagonist of YOOX Group’s first outing as documentary producer, a new chapter in the Group’s
success story in video producing.
The Artist is Absent, directed by American writer and director Alison Chernick, reveals the vast,
groundbreaking impact of the Belgian creative genius Martin Margiela - the designer who changed the
way in which fashion is seen and the enigmatic mind behind some of the most exquisite creations of
the two last decades. Margiela becomes real through the images of the documentary, frames of his
creative path, and interviews with some of fashion’s greatest names who have been part of his
incredible life, including Raf Simons, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Suzy Menkes.
An intriguing narrative that tries to unveil the true essence of Martin Margiela’s deconstructivist
revolution, the documentary has been acknowledged by 2015 Tribeca Film Festival (New York, April
15-26) in the Best Documentary Short Category.
“Thanks to YOOX Group, millions of visitors around the world will experience the creativity and genius
of Martin Margiela and discover the unique image of one of the most innovative fashion designers of
the last century,” said the director Alison Chernick. “I am incredibly proud to have collaborated with
YOOX Group, the producer of the documentary, thanks to which this nomination wouldn’t have been
possible.”
Starting April 20, a short version of the twelve-minute documentary will be shown exclusively on
yoox.com, thecorner.com and shoescribe.com. The full version of the short documentary will be
showcased online from April 27, right after the announcement of 2015 Tribeca Film Festival winners.
