Philosophy
Jump Jam is a no-entry fee jump rope competition presented by Spectrum Health in partnership
with Grand Rapids Public Schools for children grades 3 - 5 (at time of registration). The teams
will be coached by GRPS PE teachers and/or GRPS approved volunteer. Practices will take place
over the course of 9 weeks. The students will have up to 8 categories in which they can
compete.
Jump Jam has the goal of promoting health & wellness to meet the mission of Spectrum Health
which is to improve the health of the communities we serve. “Jumping rope for 10 minutes is
the cardiovascular capacity equivalent of jogging for 30 minutes. You can burn as many as 1,000
calories per hour; it’s a full-body workout that requires a number of muscles to be engaged,
including back, glutes, shoulders, abs, chest and arms, which is why it’s an exercise choice for a
number of athletes, according to “Parade magazine.”
Jump Jam will bring all of the students together under one roof to compete for 1st, 2nd & 3rd
place Jump Jam trophies, per grade and category on Saturday, May 2, 2015! There will be
prizes, give-aways for spectators, and a good time for all who attend the no-entry fee event,
that’s open to the public.
Outcomes/Benefits
 Physical fitness activities for students to promote health and wellness
 Families and community members joining together to support students
 Creating the foundation for a long-standing student-based health-focused event
Structure
Practice will begin after March 2, 2015. Each school will determine their own practice
schedule. Each team will practice a minimum of one (1) hour a week with a maximum of two
(2) hours for 9 weeks.
Principal’s Responsibilities
 Promoting program to grades 3-5 (at time of registration) boys and girls.
 Making available gym practice time for team to practice during the week after school.
 Secure volunteer coaches for a girls and boys team
 Clearing coaches with the volunteer office (through standard GRPS process)

 DeVos Place, Exhibit Hall C, 303 Monroe Ave NW, all day event, free admission for all
spectators!

All registered students can compete in any of the 8 competitive categories outlined below.
There are a total of 5 individual categories and 3 team categories. It is recommended, but not
required, that each student competes in no more than 3 individual categories. All students
should be registered for their competitive categories by March 27, 2015.

Rules and Regulations
GENERAL EVENT RULES
1. No team shall be allowed to name their team to include 'Spectrum Health', 'Jump Jam',
Jumpin’ All Stars’ or any derivative thereof. For example, a team named "Jump Jammers"
will not be allowed. All submitted team names will be subject to the approval and a
confirmation will be given to each coach after the registration period expires.
2. Teams are encouraged to create their own team “uniform” using GRPS district dress code
policy as their guide. Please note: all Jump Jam participants will be given a sports “bib” that
identifies them with a number during the competition
The following behaviors will not be tolerated and will result in the offender being
disqualified and asked to leave the event site immediately:
1. Pushing, shoving or otherwise fighting with a program employee, official, coach,
participant, or spectator.
2. Bullying, Harassing, using profanity, or behaving in an insubordinate fashion toward an
event employee, official, spectator, or participant.
3. Any conduct that is considered detrimental to the welfare of the event.
4. Participants and coaches will be disqualified for making derogatory remarks or actions
toward event officials, other participants or program employee (i.e., taunting).
5. Coaches will be held responsible for any misconduct among their participants.

Reminders to Coaches
1.
Coaches must control their participants before, during and after the competition.
2.
Participants should be instructed to arrive promptly.
3.
Participants are not allowed on the floor until the preceding event is finished.
Participants should not jump rope in the hallways, prep area or in the gym while other
events are going on.
4.
Coaches must be in the prep area with their team or they must bring an adult to be in
the area at all times.
5.
If extremely severe weather makes the event questionable, visit the jumpjam.org
website for updates or local news.
6.
Participants should not leave valuables unattended.
7.
Coaches please review the program rules with your participants and have them take
home a copy of the parent’s conduct guide.
