PRE WINTER NEWSLETTER 2014 AGM and Dinner This is prior notification that the AGM and Dinner will be on Monday 7 April 2014 at 6:00 pm in the Curve Restaurant, Vibe Hotel, Milsons Point. Note that this is a different room to the one we have used in the past. The AGM paperwork with RSVP details will be sent shortly. RENOVATION – Gordon Cox Finally we are at a point where we are about to renovate the basement area. This is after two years of discussions, many design reworks, and two development applications which were both partly rejected. We have now settled on a scheme which we can implement, and will be able to do before the 2014 winter. The major driver was to change the room 7 bunks for floor beds. At the same time, we are taking the opportunity to upgrade the bathrooms, renew bedroom finishes, tidy up the laundry and hallway, and replace the lockers. This is considerably less ambitious and hence cheaper than designs presented at the last few AGM meetings, as we were not able to get these approved. Design is being finalised for the builder at present, and we intend to sign a contract for the work very soon. As things must move fast now to get this completed before winter, lots more will have happened by the AGM on 7 April, where there will be an update on progress. GAS HEATING Apart from a hiccup with a gas delivery late in the season, the new hydronic heating system appears to be an overwhelming success. All have commented on the cosy atmosphere it provides and of course, warmth in the basement corridor is great. Now all we have to do is get people to shut the door to the Wood Room, this is the inside door from hallway to Wood Room. The system uses a gas fired boiler to heat a sealed system which is piped to heaters throughout the lodge. Guests appear to have been happy with the suggested heater setting, about 1-2 on the thermostat on each heater. Hot Water is heated by directing this same sealed heating system through coils in each of the two hot water heaters. When there are less than, say, 10 people in residence, one of these heaters can be by-passed by the simple switch of two clearly marked valves. Turning the system On and Off is achieved on the electrical switchboard with one circuit breaker, so this makes it dead easy for summer guests. LODGE CAPTAINS Thank you to those who kindly accepted the role of Lodge Captain last year. A reminder to please return the Lodge Captain’s paperwork within seven days of your stay. Sometimes problems arise during your stay which may require immediate attention so please contact me to hopefully resolve the situation. Please remind guests to check with the cupboard in the kitchen before taking extra supplies from the food store. Check all vacuum cleaners are empty. 2014 SUBSCRIPTIONS Members will have received an emailed invoice for the 2014 Subscriptions which were due on 1 March 2014 and are now OVERDUE. FOOD STORE First a little bit of history about the Food Store. When the Lodge was first built there was no supermarket in the valley, so as a convenience to guests, commonly used items such as, breakfast juices, cereals, dry biscuits, condiments, jams, sauces, coffee, tea and smoked oysters were provided. As well, there was a limited range of tinned food paid for by each guest on an honour system. Just as now, guests brought their own fresh food and specialty items. The charging system proved cumbersome and so was included in the tariff. Over the years items stocked have grown with many more items available. Given that there is now a very good supermarket in the Valley it is planned to reduce stock varieties by simplifying to basic items. For example the currently stocked four different rice types will now be reduced to just one. Some members have requested gluten free and other products but it is felt that if one has a dietary requirement one brings their own. Parents are reminded that children should ask before removing food or drinks from the food store. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN PERISHER Brian & Anne Smith are leaving ‘The Man From Snowy River Hotel’ after 27 years management. Eiger Chalet has been sold to Glen & Jenny Frost and their three adult children. Eiger was previously owned by Garry Fischer who built it in 1961. Eiger is a great place to have an after skiing drink with a great atmosphere and wonderful views of the Valley. Only a short walk back up the hill to Ku-ring-gai. The Sundeck Hotel is for sale. The New Guthega Freedom Quad chairlift from the bottom of Cow Pastures J-bar through to the top of the Blue Cow T-bar This will open up such terrific wide open groomed runs like Karl’s, Schnaxl and Bloody Mary and top off-piste runs like The Screw. Proposed for 2015 - a Half Pipe for board riders and skiers running down the right hand side of Leichhardt T-bar. The slope faces due south and it is expected that it will bring Half Pipe board riders and skiers from the northern hemisphere for their training. All road signage has been completed in the Perisher area with our address being 36 Burramys Road, Perisher Valley 2624. Mail is not delivered but can be collected from the Perisher Valley Post Office on the Skitube Concourse. PERISHER HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Perisher Historical Society’s book “Highway to Heaven – A History of Perisher and the Ski Resorts along the Kosciuszko Road” by Peter Southwell-Keely, launched last year has won the Skade Award from the International Skiing History Association and will be presented at a banquet in Park City Resort, Utah. Perisher Historical Society Annual Dinner Sunday 8 June 2014 – Marritz Hotel (formerly Marritz Alpine) Guest Speaker - Ron Webb. Ron is a Perisher Resort employee, Antarctic veteran, avid photographer and who has installed many lifts Doppelmayr, not only in NSW and Victoria but around the world. Ron has done many electrical jobs for us at Ku-ring-gai beginning with the basement extension. PERISHER EVENTS NORDIC WEEK 3 to 10 August 2014 Check out more details on www.perisherxcountry.org PERISHER CUP – 14TH SEPTEMBER This year 2014 will be the 62nd running of the Perisher Cup. There are four to a team with no age limit and consists of three events – Alpine Giant Slalom, Cross Country and a Jump. Yes, there is a serious side to it but having fun is also important with some teams competing in fancy dress. What about giving it some thought and let’s see how many teams we can enter this year.
