President’s Update
Dear members and friends,
Korean Canadian community.
Spring is in the air! Whether you are
looking forward to shedding your parka,
fine tuning your golf swings, dusting off
your bicycle, or simply spending more
time outdoors, spring is a refreshing
change from the long winter and a
rejuvenating time with many events and
activities to look forward to.
In everything that we do, we are
committed to adhering to our core
values of professionalism, excellence,
accountability, collaboration, and
expertise.
The KCMA board and volunteers have
been working diligently behind the
scenes this winter to plan our member
and community programs for this year.
We had our annual board retreat on
January 16-17th to think hard about how
we can offer better value to our paying
members and how to best utilize our
expertise and available resources to
contribute to our community in a
substantive way.
In addition to providing various
networking opportunities, we will
continue to invest our resources and
focus our efforts to deliver high quality
CME
events
for
our
members,
mentorship program for students, and
engage with our community partners to
help build a healthier and stronger

some of the work that we have been
doing these past several months. But
there remains much more to be done!
Thank you for your continued interest
and support of the KCMA. Without
your
engagement
and

support our programs would not be
possible.
Best wishes to all of you. I look
forward to seeing you at our events
throughout the year!

2014 Health & Wellness Day
Our first annual community Health & Wellness Day was held on
November 1, 2014 at the Bathurst-Finch Hub.
Organized in
partnership with the KCWA Family & Social Services, this event was
well attended by the public with 73 participants in the lectures and
266 participants in the various seminars and workshops lead by
volunteers from KONA, Rosedale Pharmacy, Galleria Pharmacy,
Immigrant Women’s Health Centre, Canadian Diabetes Association,
and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
We sincerely thank all of our organizers, speakers, workshop
leaders, and volunteers, without whose efforts this important
community initiative would not have been possible.
Special thank you to Ms. Young Oak Kang (KCWA), Ms. Younglee Ha
(KCWA), Ms. Christine Moon (KCWA), Ms. Eun Joo Kim (KCWA), Ms.
Soon Kyoung Park (KONA), Ms. Hyang Jin Kim (KONA), Ms. Elizabeth
Lee (Rosedale Pharmacy), Mr. Jae Ihn Song (Galleria Pharmacy), Ms.

important
discussions
highlighting the clinical significance
of obstructive sleep apnea in the
Korean Canadian population.

The KCMA organized our first CME

between
February 14-21, 2015.
In
addition
to
providing
direct
patient care at the
clinic, the medical
team visited St. Nicolas Hospital in St. Marc to provide
much needed medical supplies and equipment.
The KCMA hosted our
annual family BBQ on
Saturday, August 16, 2014
at
Sherwood
Park
in
Toronto. This free event
was well attended by
members and friends. For
the first time, we invited mentees from the KCMA
mentorship program to meet with their mentors and
other members of the medical community at this
event.
It was nice to see so many young and
promising students attending our annual BBQ and
learn of their various talents and ambition. They
represent the future of our community.
The mission was organized by Milal Church in Toronto
with many young participants from Young Nak Church.
The mission was lead by Minister Eun Sang Yu, Mr.
Jason Jung, Dr. Don Kim and Dr. Tae Kyoung Kim.
Other participants from the KCMA included Dr. MyungGi Kim, Dr. Ki-Dong Lim, Dr. Shawn Lee, and Ms.
Eileen Heo.
We would like to thank Drs. Marie Kim, Daniel Yim,
Seung Jun Lee, Dawn Lim, and Huntae Kim for helping
to organize the BBQ. Special thanks to Ms. Hae Yung
Yim, Rosa Yi, and Clara Cheong for their help on BBQ
day!
This was a very rewarding experience for all
participants. We hope to see a greater number of
KCMA members participating next year!!

Mentorship Program Update
Our Christmas get together was held on Saturday,
November 29, 2014 at Project Gallery in
Toronto. This event was free to all KCMA members.
This was a fantastic networking event with an
opportunity to meet and greet members of the
medical community over good food and drinks
surrounded by beautiful artwork.
The Persian
catering was delicious!
KCMA has been running a mentorship program, helping
students on their journey to become physicians. The
program selects undergraduate student applicants
who will be paired with current medical students or
residents. Mentors provide essay support and
interview practice to mentees for mentee medical
school applications. Mentors can also share their
stories about their careers in medicine. An open line
of communication is maintained and many mentors
and mentees continue their relationship beyond the
formal program length of 1 year.
The mentorship program for 2014-2015 year is coming
to an end with the end of school year in April. We
would like to thank all the mentors and mentees for
their participation in making this year's program
another success. Please stay tuned for the upcoming
2015-2016 year applications for mentors as we seek to
bring exciting changes to the program to make it even
better next year!

KCMA from a Student’s Perspective
It has been an absolute privilege to experience KCMA
first hand as the Medical Student Liaison for the past
eight months. During this time, I have been
continuously astonished by how welcoming and
receptive KCMA is to medical students, and have
found value in networking with physicians from
different fields, engaging in the Korean-Canadian
community and exploring different aspects of the
medical profession through KCMA. It is thus my hope
that more medical students will have the opportunity
engage in various KCMA events (e.g. upcoming Gala)
and programs (e.g. mentorship program).
opportunities for student engagement are expected to
commence in the next few months.
If you are a medical student looking to further engage
with the KCMA, please feel free to reach me at
[email protected] and look out for future events and
opportunities.
Rosa Kyuwon Lee, MD Candidate
Class of 2018 Queen’s Medicine
To this end, KCMA is currently building a strategic
plan to further engage medical students. A survey has
been sent out to current KCMA students, and
interviews have been conducted with non-KCMA
students to create an effective strategy to reach
diverse student populations. Possible collaboration
with other medical student organizations, including
the World Korean Medical Students’ Organization
(WKMSO) and Korean American Medical Student
Association (KAMSA) are also underway. Enhanced

Call for Medical Expertise to Help
Educate our Patients
We are recruiting authors for the following
topics:
Under the leadership of Dr. Seung-Jun Lee,
the KCMA will be publishing health
information articles to empower the public
with knowledge and resources to help them
achieve better health and wellbeing. The
articles will be published in a format similar
to patient handouts but written in Korean.
The contents of the articles will be at the
knowledge level of the layperson and based on
Canadian guidelines.
•
Completing this project requires support from
all
KCMA members. We need medical
students/residents to write these articles; we
also need staff physicians to oversee the
creation of these articles. Proficiency in
Korean is not necessary; the English drafts will
be translated into Korean by Dr. Lee. All
drafts will be subject to peer review prior to
publication.
