McKay and host Feinstein team up for Pennies from Heaven and The Nearness of You, and she performs her original Beneath the Underdog. Marilyn and Alan Bergman have penned the themes for TV programs and have earned multiple Emmys, Grammys, and Academy Awards, including for The Way We Were, written with Marvin Hamlisch. Feinstein performs There’s You, co-written with the Bergmans. 3/16 Somi American vocalist/songwriter Somi combines the music of her African heritage with American-style jazz, pop, and soul. She discuss the cultural roots of her music, performs her original Last Song and joins Feinstein for Embraceable You. 3/23 Joshua Bell & Jeremy Denk The dynamic classical duo of violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Jeremy Denk have been recording and performing together in the classical repertoire for years, and perform selections which connect the dots between French Impressionism and Gershwin. 3/30Lily Frost Canadian vocalist and songwriter Lily Frost launched her career with her band The Colorifics, which packed cubs up and down the West Coast of the US and Canada for years. She performs her original song Forest Fire along with a few old favorites. JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA WITH CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE Tuesday at 9 pm 3/3 Marcus Roberts and The Modern Jazz Generation It’s all piano all the time from Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Marcus Roberts and The Modern Jazz Generation pay tribute to Jelly Roll Morton, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, and Chick Corea. 3/10 Hip Hop + Jazz = Revive Big Band What would it sound like if someone bridged the gap between big band jazz and classic hip-hop anthems? Thomas aligns a multi-generational ensemble with a black music tradition that leads to the present day. 3/17 Spokfrevo Orquestra: Carnival + Jazz In Brazil, during Carnival, music fills the streets. The Spokfrevo Orquestra bring the joyous music from the streets of Brazil to the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Hear highlights from this exhilarating performance while tracing the origins of Brazilian Carnival music. 3/24 SFJAZZ (TBD) 3/31Anat Cohen: Roots of Rio from Jazz at Lincoln Center Choro, which means “to cry” in Portuguese, is a genre often referred to as “The New Orleans Jazz of Brazil.” Israeli clarinetist/saxophonist Anat Cohen leads Choro Aventuroso. Her group will play waltzes, mazurkas and African-Brazilian rhythms such as the Lundu, all of which help characterize the essence of Choro. J5 Wednesday at 9 pm Arturo Sandoval Grammy Award-winning jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval is one of Cuba’s best-known musical exports. On this Piano Jazz from 2002, Sandoval he joins McPartland for a duet of his composition Blues in F, and Sandoval solos on Surena and Romantio. Copyist/arranger/musician Mercer Ellington (1919 –1996) worked for his father, Duke Ellington, as a horn player in Duke’s band before becoming manager of the group. He also composed for the group, resulting in his original tune, Things Ain’t What They Used to Be. On this 1994 Piano Jazz, he reprises some of his father’s gems, such as In My Solitude. 3/18Remembering Marian Remembering Marian: A Celebration of the Music and Life of Marian McPartland was held on March 20, 2014. On what would have been her ninety-sixth birthday, the Piano Jazz family gathered at 92Y in New York to say goodbye. Hosted by Jon Weber, friends and family celebrated McPartland’s remarkable life in music. Guests featured on the broadcast of this memorial concert include Tony Bennett, Barbara Carroll, Bill Charlap, Michael Feinstein, Chris Brubeck, Jon Faddis, and many more. 3/25 Dardanelle Hadley Jazz vocalist and pianist Dardanelle Hadley (1917 – 1997) was born Marcia Marie Mullen, the daughter of vocalist/pianist Marcius Mosely “Buck” Mullen. In the 1940s, she formed a trio that played regularly at the Copacabana Club in New York, and she went on to work with jazz greats such as Bucky Pizaarelli and Grady Tate. In this Piano Jazz session from 1984, Hadley shows off her chops on All the Things You Are and and duets with McPartland on It’s Delovely.
