Robots take over ecommerce-driven
logistics from humans
The company is using automation in select centres to pick and move
packages and will extend this to other facilities, Mehta said. It will also use
new technologies like sorters and profilers to better handle packages as
per specific orders. Mehta didn’t give details on investment or the number of
systems Flipkart is setting up. Amazon India is meanwhile planning to set
up its first automated sortation system at one of its 11 facilities, a person
with knowledge of the matter said. Amazon denied comment. WHY AUTOMATION? The online retail industry, which was valued at $1 billion two years ago, is
expected to reach $32 billion (more than Rs 2 lakh crore) in 2020, according
to retail advisory firm Technopak. While online travel still constitutes more
than 70% of the ecommerce segment in the country, online retail’s share
has doubled from 10% in 2009. Urgent need for automation also comes from the concept of seasonal rise
in sales is fast getting obsolete, industry experts said. “For a month you
have an iPhone model as a slow-selling product. Suddenly a retailer
announces a heavy discount the next month and there is a major influx of
orders. How do you suddenly get additional manpower to handle a spurt?”
said Apurva Vadera, who heads operations at GreyOrange India, one of
the few home-grown robotics firms. At courier firm DTDC’s Delhi hub, a 25-arm monster sorts packages
in lightning speed: 3,600 items an hour, or one in every second.
MUMBAI: At courier firm DTDC’s Delhi hub, a 25-arm monster sorts packages
in lightning speed: 3,600 items an hour, or one in every second. The robotic sorter is one of the highlights of eight automated hubs DTDC is
setting up in the country for Rs 50 crore over the next year and half,
executive director Abhishek Chakraborty said in a recent interview. The DTDC initiative is an example of machines increasingly replacing humans
at logistics operations as they try to keep up with demand from the
fastgrowing ecommerce segment. Ecommerce companies need third-party support to deliver almost all products
they sell, and in a segment where cutthroat competition is the norm, packaging
quality and the time taken to deliver the product play a major role in customer
stickiness. Companies such as Flipkart, Gojavas and DTDC are investing
hundreds of crores to modernise logistics. “By utilising automation and robotics, we expect to reduce time by replacing
manually intensive tasks, and respond quickly to the new and emerging
demands, in most cases even anticipating them,” said Sanjeev Mehta, vice
president and head of product and design for eKart, Flipkart’s dedicated
logistics partner. The company has installed 12 automated sortation systems for Flipkart,
Gojavas, Aramex, Delhivery and DTDC since 2009. It is in talks with one of
these companies to sell “Butler”, a smart automated guided vehicle robot to
help in picking products fast and putting them into packages, said Vadera,
without elaborating. One of its first customers was Flipkart, for which it designed an automated
sortation system at a fifth of the price that was being charged by an
overseas company, he said. HOW IT WORKS Broadly, ecommerce logistics operations can be divided into two stages: i)
picking of the right products, combing it with other products (mobile with
earphones etc) and packing them; ii) sorting and allocating packages as per
the delivery location. Most Indian companies have invested in automation of the second stage:
sorting. At DTDC’s Delhi hub, a parcel takes half an hour before it’s ready
for delivery, down from two hours when it used to be done manually. GreyOrange is now in talks to sell a sorter which can do 7,200 packages an
hour, Vadera said. 4

The damage to the road and infrastructure due
sea erosion at Kovalam fishing harbour in
Kancheepuram district on May 14, 2015.
Those along the Kovalam coast are worried of their houses
getting washed away.
Sea erosion along a 500-metre stretch of the Kovalam shore
has prompted residents along the coast and environmental
activists to make a joint appeal to State government agencies
to find a solution. While this is a regular phenomenon during
the rainy season, residents were taken by surprise when they
saw the onslaught of the waves over the past 10 days.
Fishermen said that a concrete road connecting the main
thoroughfare with the coastal hamlet caved in and two lampposts were uprooted on Wednesday evening, leaving many
coastal areas without power. However, electricity lines were set
right by Thursday afternoon, residents said.
R. Narayanan, a fifth-generation fisherman from Kovalam said,
as the road caved in, they cordoned off one side of the road to
prevent any untoward incident. Panic gripped residents living
near the shore, as waves came far into the housing units and a
temple nearby, which they thought might get washed away. He
said three children, who were playing under a lamp post, had a
narrow escape when it crashed on Wednesday.
On Monday evening, the sea had turned rough and giant waves
battered the coast destroying several boats, said S. Kalaivani,
(86). She said the Kovalam fishermen community had over 2,000
residents and they had been petitioning the department for several
years to construct a sea wall.
“Numerous petitions submitted to the officials went unanswered.
The sea was 500 metres away from our village even in 2011, but
it has been steadily eating into our land. They are taking
measures now and various officials have visited us, but there
has been no action,” she said.

Residents recalled that many projects formulated over the past
few years had remained on paper. The Water Resources
Department had even devised proposals to establish a geo-tube
sea wall instead of concrete groynes. However, it was dropped
owing to the cost factor and coastal zone regulations, they said.
However, an activist said that coastal regulation zone rules will
not be a problem. “Recently, the rules were changed in such a
manner that permissions could be obtained at the State-level
itself. All it requires is coordination between environment,
fisheries and WRD departments. If the government wishes, the
permission can be granted within a week,” he said.
Mahalingam, a fisherman, said that the government should rope
in agencies like IIT-Madras and get the work done quickly.
“The government is helping Pulicat fishermen but does not seem
inclined to help us. If they delay it any further, our hamlet will
get washed away,” he said.

‘Home-brewed morphine’ made possible
Scientists have figured out how to brew morphine using the
same kit used to make beer at home.
They have genetically modified yeast to perform the complicated
chemistry needed to convert sugar to morphine.
The findings, published in Nature Chemical Biology, raise
promise for medicine but also concerns about “home-brewed”
illegal drugs.
Experts have called for tight control of organisms genetically
modified to produce narcotics.
Brewing bad
If you brew beer at home, then you are relying on microscopic
yeast that turns sugars into alcohol.
But by borrowing DNA from plants, scientists have been
genetically engineering yeasts that can perform each of the steps
needed to convert sugar into morphine.
One stage of the process - the production of an intermediary
chemical called reticuline - had been a stumbling block.
That has been solved by a team at the University of California,
Berkeley, and the scientists say it should now be possible to put
all the steps together and “brew” morphine.
Dr John Dueber, a bioengineer at the university, said: “What you
really want to do from a fermentation perspective is to be able to
feed the yeast glucose, which is a cheap sugar source, and
have the yeast do all the chemical steps required downstream to
make your target therapeutic drug.
“With our study, all the steps have been described, and it’s now
a matter of linking them together and scaling up the process.
“It’s not a trivial challenge, but it’s doable.”
High hopes
Morphine plays a vital role in pain relief in many hospitals, but it
requires a poppy harvest to manufacture.
Brewed morphine could, eventually, be easier to produce. It
could also allow scientists to tweak each of the steps to develop
new types of painkiller.
The broad concept of using microscopic organisms to make
drugs is not new in medicine.
Insulin for people with diabetes has been made in genetically
modified bacteria for decades.
But there are concerns these latest advances could allow a DIY
drug lord to brew illegal narcotics in their home.
‘Basic skills’
“In principle, anyone with access to the yeast strain and basic
skills in fermentation would be able to grow morphine producing
yeast using a a home-brew kit for beer-making,” reads a
comment piece in Nature journal.
It calls for tight controls on such genetically modified yeasts.
Prof Paul Freemont, one of the directors of the Centre for
Synthetic Biology and Innovation at Imperial College London,
said: “Making opioids that can be used in an illegal sense
makes this an important story.
“It’s technically demanding to make these strains, but in the
future who is to know?
“That is why this is such an important time - how do we regulate
these strains?”

Difference between sun lotion and
sunscreen?
There is a huge range of different sun products available,
including lotions, mousses, sprays, gels and creams.
In general, they can use either organic or inorganic filters to
absorb or reflect Ultraviolet rays.
The terms ‘sun lotions’ and ‘sunscreens’ are used
interchangeably to describe many of them.
‘Suntan lotion’ is sometimes used to refer to substances
designed to accelerate tanning with little or no sun protection
factor.
Some people use the term ‘sunblock’ to refer to sunscreens that
reflect rather than absorb UV rays.
But what’s more important than the name used is the product’s
protection qualities, which can be found on the label.

Cystic fibrosis drug offers hope to patients
A “groundbreaking” cystic fibrosis therapy could profoundly
improve patients’ quality of life, say doctors.
Patients often die before their 40s as mucus clogs and damages
their lungs and leaves them prone to infection.
A major trial on 1,108 patients, in the New England Journal of

genetic errors that cause the disease and may increase life
expectancy.

The result is a thick mucus that inexorably damages the lungs.
Antibiotics help prevent infection and drugs can loosen the mucus,
but nothing deals with the fundamental problem for most patients.
The combination of drugs - lumacaftor and ivacaftor - were
designed to repair that microscopic machinery.
This treatment combination should work on around half of
patients, while one of the drugs on its own corrects a small
proportion of errors.
New treatments are still required for the remaining patients.

Prof Stuart Elborn, who led the European part of the trial from

we correct the basic defect early in life.

against cystic fibrosis and this combination therapy looks set to

Arulmigu Kandaswamy Temple - History
The battle of Thiruporur was fought against “Thalayaya Asuran” in
ether or Air and connotes the vanquishing of “arrogance or pride”.
Thiruporur as the very name suggests, is the venue of war (“Por” in
Tamil means war) and is situated between the 40 and 41 kilometer
stones on the Thiruporur High Road (Old Mahabalipuram RoadOMR ) from Chennai.
Thiruporur is an ancient little hamlet nestled around the imposing
“Arulmigu Kandaswamy Thirukoil”.
Over 450 years ago, the founding guru of Thiruporur Adhinam
Srimad Chidambara Swamy who was an ardent worshipper of
“Madurai Meenakshi Amman” had a vision of the Goddess bidding
him to build a temple for Lord Muruga at Thiruporur. This happened
when the savant challenged the Goddess that he would not eat
until she graced him with her vision. Many days passed and
Chidambaraswamy was almost in a coma.
Suddenly he could hear the anklets of the Goddess Meenakshi and when he opened his eyes slightly, he got a magnificent glimpse of
the divine feet.
The Goddess then raised the swamy to his feet and as her hands touched him, his skin turned golden. She told him that six earlier
attempts to establish the temple had failed. Chidambaraswamy reached Thiruporur to find that it was a dense forest full of palm trees.
He could hardly make out where the attempts to build the temple had been made. When he had despaired of locating the site, Lord
Muruga himself appeared as a small boy and gave him the vision of the sanctum sanctorum. Thereafter, Chidambaraswamy unearthed
the Swayambu Moortis of Lord Muruga with his consorts and established the temple.
In those days, Thiruporur was one of the hamlets under the reign of a minor Muslim ruler. When the Muslim ruler’s daughter was afflicted
with a form of vertigo, his minister “the dubash” suggested that the ruler seek the blessings of the nearby Chidambaraswamy as all
other efforts to cure his young daughter had proved unfruitful. The Muslim ruler accepted the suggestion and prostrated, along with his
daughter before Shri Chidambaraswamy.
When Sri Chidambaraswamy applied the sacred ash to his daughter’s body, she was cured instantly.
Baba's Leelas (Miracles)
Lighting lamps with water
Long before Sai Baba's fame spread, he was fond of burning
lights in his Masjid and other Temples. But for the oil needed in
those little earthenware lights that he lit, he depended on the
generosity of the grocers of Shirdi. He had made it a rule to light
earthenware lamps in the masjid every evening and he would call
on the grocers for small donations. But there came a time when
the grocers got tired of giving oil free to Sai Baba and one day they
bluntly refused to oblige him, saying they had no fresh stocks.
Without a word of protest Sai Baba returned to the masjid. Into
those earthenware lamps he poured water and lighted the wicks.
The lamps continued to burn deep into the midnight. The matter
came to the notice of the grocers who now came to Sai Baba with
profuse apologies. Wouldn't Sai Baba kindly pardon them? Sai
Baba pardoned them, but he warned them never to lie again. "You
could have refused to give me the oil, but did you have to say that
you didn't have fresh stocks?" he admonished them. But he had
made his point.
Premonition of burning fields
Once, harvesting in Shirdi had been completed and the foodgrains
of the entire village had been stored in a yard. The summer was
on. The heat was intense as only those who have lived in Shirdi
know. One afternoon Sai Baba summoned Kondaji Sutar and said
to him: "Go, your field is on flrel" Frightened, Kondaji ran to his
field and. frantically looked around for any sign of fire. There
wasn't any. He returned to the masjid and informed Sai Baba that
he had looked everywhere but had found no trace of fire and why
did Baba have to frighten him? Unfazed, Baba said : "You better
turn back and look again." Baba was right after all. Kondaji
noticed that a sheaf of corn was indeed on fire and smoke was
billowing from it. A strong wind was fanning the fire and word had
gone round to the villagers who now came running to the scene.
"Sai Baba," the people shouted "help us, help us put the fire out!"
Thereupon, Sai Baba walked casually towards the yard, sprinkled
some water on a stack of sheaves and said: " There now! The fire
will die down!" And so it happened.

ARIES
There’s plenty to talk about this week with your lover. The
problem is that he or she might not understand everything that
you have to say. The ruler of your romance sector, the Sun, will
enter chatty Gemini on Thursday but earlier in the week,
Mercury will have already turned retrograde in the same part of
your chart. Translation? This won’t be the time to make vital
decisions about your love life. Go with the flow and see where
that leads you.
TAURUS
A bright New Moon in your sign on Monday will set the stage for
a personal fresh start. This can involve your romantic life but it
can just as easily be another area if love isn’t your main focus
these days. Still, if you want something in love, now is your
time to plant those seeds. On Thursday, an intense
conversation about matters of the heart might be more than
you bargained for.
GEMINI
This might not be the smoothest week for you. On Monday,
Mercury will turn retrograde in your sign, making it difficult for
you to clearly express yourself. Take your time and be sure to
do what you can to clarify your thoughts — especially to your
partner. The two of you might have a major disagreement
about a financial matter on Thursday. Then on Friday, you
might feel that your partner is dimming your light a little too
much.
CANCER
If you’re looking to make new friends, you’re in luck. On
Monday, a New Moon will fall in the area of your chart that rules
your social life, opening the door wide. If single, this will be a
good time to consider Internet dating or to install a dating app
on your phone. If you’re in a relationship, Thursday might be
extra intense. You might feel as if you are constantly making
compromises in your relationship and if so, there might be a
situation that leads to a breaking point. Something has to
change.

mutual chemistry. The problem however, is that on Friday, Mars
will oppose Saturn and there will be circumstances beyond
your control that may put the kibosh on any plans for a good
time. Hang in there!
VIRGO
Your love life might be sticky — or just plain out of control. On
one hand, expect plenty of passion. Feelings can easily go to
an extreme and there’s no such thing as middle ground. On
the other hand however, you might start to feel that your lover
has more control over your life than you’re comfortable with.
This might express itself strongly in your social life and your
personal dreams. Don’t give away who you are just because
you’ve given away your heart.
LIBRA
On Monday, a New Moon will fall in the most intimate area of
your chart — the 8th House of Sex and Deep Sharing. This can
set the stage for you to have an erotic encounter with
someone. He or she might be your partner if you’re in a
relationship, but if you’re single, this is a rife set up for a hot
and steamy sexual indulgence. In fact, on Thursday the power
of attraction will be a major theme and you could find a
commanding VIP irresistible.
SCORPIO
There’s definitely news for you in the relationship department
since a promising New Moon will fall in your partnership sector on
Monday. This can set the stage for a fresh start between you and
your mate — especially if you have felt as though things are
getting stale. Now you’ll have an opportunity to liven up your
relationship using your senses as a guide. Have a conversation
with your sweetheart on Thursday. Be willing to go to the depths in
order to reach the heights in love.
SAGITTARIUS
This week, matters of the heart will likely be more work than
pleasure. First, on Monday, Mercury will turn retrograde in your
partnership sector. Until June 11, this signals that you and your
mate have some work to do in the communication department.
Take a “roll your sleeves up” approach and be willing to do the
work necessary to improve things between you and your mate.
That will be vitally important on Friday.
CAPRICON
Love potential is all over your chart this week! First, a glittering
New Moon in your romance sector on Monday can be all you need
to help you meet someone special. Of course, you’ll have to do
your part and make an effort to be social. If you do, the Universe is
willing and ready to reward you. If you’re in a relationship,
Thursday will be a day to remember. The hold you have on your
lover can’t be underestimated. Use your power wisely.
AQUARIUS
If you find yourself thinking more about an ex this week, don’t be
surprised. The urge to stalk his or her Facebook page, drive past
his or her house, or even send a friendly text are all possibilities. If
you find yourself having an actual conversation with your old flame,
the two of you might be very tempted to give things a second try.
Don’t rush into this — no matter how enticing it is. There’s a
reason you broke up in the first place. Remember it.
PISCES
If you’re in a relationship, it’s possible that you and your partner
will not see eye-to-eye on a family matter. There could be a
decision you need to make together concerning your living
situation or about a relative. If so, it’ll be hard to reach an
agreement. If you can delay this conversation until later next
month, that would be ideal. If you’re dating someone casually, one
of your friends might try to interfere with your love life on Thursday.
Set boundaries.

Powerful Prayers
Kim and Ray were very close companions. They were
neighbours, studied together, completed their graduation and
worked together. They planned to enjoy a vacation and took a
sea voyage to explore different places. Unfortunately, their
ship wrecked in the middle of the ocean. While most of the
travellers were unable to secure their life, only Kim and Ray,
who were able to swim, could save their life by reaching an
isolated island. They were very happy and thanked god for saving them.
However, the island looked like a deserted island with hardly
any trees, and poor atmosphere that no living organism could
survive. They have no option other than praying to god to save
their lives.
Kim and Ray sincerely prayed to god. Nothing happened even
after a couple of days. They decided to split their ways into
opposite ends of the island and challenged themselves about
whose prayer would be powerful.
Both divided their region in the deserted island and offered
their prayers to god. Kim prayed god that he would need food to survive. Surprisingly, he got a pile of food, fruits and vegetables on the sea
shore.
After two days, he requested for a beautiful girl as his wife, as
he was feeling very lonely in the island. In a few hours, a ship
wrecked again in the island near Kim’s region, where only a
beautiful girl was alive! He married the girl.
After a few days, he requested for more food and shelter. All
prayers of Kim were addressed by God.

It was almost a month after the ship wreck and Kim decided to
move back to his hometown. He prayed god to send him a ship
to take him home. Surprisingly, a ship came and took Kim and
his wife.
Just before the ship was about to move, a voice appeared! ‘Are you going alone, leaving your companion of life here?’
Kim was surprised, ‘May I know who is this and whom you are
referring to? I have my wife with me!’
The voice said, ‘I’m the one whom you offered your prayers!,
whom you requested to save your life, whom you requested food
and shelter and of course, a wife!’
Kim happily stood on his knees and said, ‘Thank you god!’
Then god said, ‘But why do you leave your companion here?’
Kim was confused again! Then god added, ‘Don’t get so excited
my son. Your prayers are not answered and fulfilled by me. I was
only fulfilling Ray’s prayers. He prayed only one thing to me! He
said ‘Please fulfil all the prayers of Kim and it is my only prayer to
you.’ Kim was in tears and rushed to the other side of the island.
He realized that he did not even think about his best friend Ray
and was happily enjoying life with all pleasures.
He could not find Ray there and asked god ‘Where he was?’
God replied, ‘I took him with me, the man with the golden heart
should be with me! But I will fulfil all your prayers as I promised
him to do so!’
Kim was completely broken and realized that his friend’s prayers
were more powerful.
