The challenge of strengthening and deepening the relevance of the
Kelowna Art Gallery to our region and beyond continues to be an
exciting task for those of us who work and volunteer on the Gallery’s
behalf. An important part of this effort is exploring ways to better
serve you, our members, and to reach out to new audiences who will
increase our attendance, profile, and benefit to the community. I
believe that the upcoming lineup of nationally recognized exhibitions,
publications, educational programs, and community-based projects is
an excellent demonstration of the strides we are making in fostering a
deeper appreciation for the visual arts and providing opportunities for
people to be inspired, to learn, to create, and sometimes, to debate.
Of course, we could not fulfill our mission without you.
All of us, the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers of the Kelowna
Art Gallery, would like to thank you, our donors, members and friends,
for your continued support of the Gallery.

about anything we can do to make your experience richer and more
enjoyable. Your feedback is important to us.

A Story of Canadian Art:
As Told by the Hart House Art Collection
Opening Reception
Friday, May 8, 7 to 9 pm
This is a free event, open to members and guests by invitation.
May 9 to July 19, 2015
The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased and honoured to be a venue this
summer for this important touring exhibition of historical Canadian art.
The forty paintings in this show are all in the collection of the Justina
M. Barnicke Gallery at Hart House, University of Toronto. Independent
curator Dr. Christine Boyanoski has structured the exhibition and has
written the text in the beautiful catalogue that accompanies the show.
Kelowna audiences will have the rare opportunity to see paintings
by nine members of the Group of Seven (who actually numbered
ten artists before they expanded to form the Canadian Group of
Painters in 1932), as well as by Tom Thomson, David Milne, and other
artists active in the early to mid twentieth century. These include an
impressive number of women artists, including Prudence Heward,
Lilias Torrance Newton, Paraskeva Clark, Kathleen Morris, and Bess
and Yvonne Housser. Works by these women painters have never
previously been exhibited in Kelowna.
A Story of Canadian Art is organized and circulated by the Justina M.
Barnicke Gallery (Hart House, University of Toronto, Canada). The
exhibition is financially supported by the Museums Assistance Program
of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Wayfarer
July 25 to October 18, 2015
The title of Victoria, BC-based artist Jeroen Witvliet’s solo exhibition
at the Kelowna Art Gallery is taken from a painting he knows well,
created in c. 1500 by Hieronymus Bosch that hangs in the Boijmans
van Beuingen Museum in Witvliet’s “home town” of Rotterdam in the
Netherlands. Wayfarer is also the title given by the artist to his recent
series of large, dark paintings that will be in the exhibition, along
with his Day/Night/Day Stadium paintings, and small works depicting
human hands at an enlarged scale.
The exhibition has been considered as a complete experience, an
installation, rather than a gathering of discrete works. Witvliet is
interested in activating the entire gallery space, and in visitors’
interactions once they are in this space. He is fascinated by the
dynamic nature of political and social situations, and with ambiguity
and memory. The Wayfarer paintings are dense and puzzling works,
fascinating in their seemingly random detail – mounds of discarded
stuff along with branches, as though the entire contents of each
composition has been readied for a bonfire.
Opening Reception
Friday, July 24, 7 to 9 pm
Artist’s talk at 7 pm.
This is a free event, open to members and guests by invitation.

The Artist’s Garden Project
July 4 to September 20, 2015
The Kelowna Art Gallery’s One on One series is curated every spring by
an emerging Canadian First Nations curator who selects an emerging
Canadian First Nations artist to work with. Each exhibition will be
accompanied by a web-based publication. This year the Kelowna
Art Gallery is pleased to be working with Saskatoon-based curator
Felicia Gay, who has selected artist Wally Dion for the exhibition.
He is also from Saskatoon but has recently been dividing his time
between there and Binghamton, New York. Dion will be showing recent
works, produced in 2013 and 2014, that are made up from a massing
together of smaller, identical components and involve “tracks” that
have been filled with paint. Dion likes to work with small units that he
fits together like puzzle pieces to create his final works.
The One-on-One series is conceived of as an open-ended, collaborative
project. It is intended that both the curator and artist be on hand for
the opening of the exhibition.
Opening Reception
Friday, July 3, 7 to 9 pm
The artist and curator will give a talk at 7 pm.
This is a free event, open to members and guests by invitation.

Pieces of What
May 2015 to April 2016
Vernon-based artists Carolina Sanchez de Bustamante and her son
Maxwell Sterry teamed up to create this year’s installation in our
Artist’s Garden Project. Their piece will have an environmental theme
and will feature translucent columns strung with spherical objects
made from clean trash. Along the sides of the space will be vegetables
and herbs growing in self-watering bins. The produce will be harvested
in the fall by gallery visitors. Whether the columns are references
to past civilizations or those of the future is up to one’s personal
interpretation. Complete with seating and lighting, this installation
promises to be an intriguing gallery experience.
Opening Reception
Friday, July 3, 7 to 9 pm
The artists will give a talk at 7 pm.
This is a free event, open to members and guests by invitation.

July 31 to September 13, 2015
Valerie Rogers is a highly-skilled wildlife artist who lives and works
in Salmon Arm, BC. She has trained with several professional artists
and has won numerous awards for her work. Her installation at the
Kelowna International Airport will consist of seven panels painted with
acrylic on canvas. They will depict a small flock of Canada Geese flying
up from the water into the sky. The panels will be staggered in height
to greater emphasize the notion of lift off. Rogers’ subject is one that
is not exclusive to the Okanagan and is bound to find resonance with
many people from other places in North America who are coming
through the airport.
Ever wanted to have your art shown at the Kelowna Art Gallery? This
is your opportunity! The POP exhibition will be open to all Kelowna and
area residents.
What fills you with pride about the Okanagan? What’s your favourite
spot? How would you capture that in art?
Help us to fill the walls of The Front project space of the Gallery with
your art this summer. You can create your work of art at home, or in
our Art Lab when you visit the Gallery. Submit a drawing or painting of
lush vineyards, local beaches, your favorite part of the Okanagan, or
even the view from your kitchen window.
The medium is up to you – pencil crayon, collage, paint, etc. Works of
art must be no larger than 9 x 12 inches in size, and can be created on
the support of your choice: paper, canvas, metal etc.
Submit your registration form by July 1. This form can be picked up at
the Gallery, or online at www.kelownaartgallery.com
Mail or drop off your masterpiece between July 1 and 24 during regular
gallery hours.
