Welcome to the Kennedy Concrete, Inc. catalog of concrete art. any good landscape design needs quality products and we have been supplying the industry with high quality concrete products since 1988. It is
only through you, our valued customers, that we were able to remain in business this long.
Inside our latest art catalog, you’ll find decorative pavers, garden stones, benches, accent pieces, and our
newest items. We hope our extensive selection will help you in making your garden a place that is a
unique extension of your personality; A place to relax in and enjoy, a place you will be proud to share
with visitors and friends.
Some, in the past, have added to the beauty of many of these pavers by either accenting them (adding
color to make the pattern stand out) or painting them. Our colored units are not painted or stained, but
have color added right to the mix so that the color is through the entire piece.
We use high quality raw materials and some of the same chemical additives that are used in high rises to
give us one of the strongest concretes in the business. Concrete products (including painted units) are
some of the most durable for outside use and with proper care will last for years .
Keep in mind that our reasonable prices allow you, for a small sum, to add a few accent pieces and
change the look of your garden. We are constantly adding patterns to our line. Check with your local
dealer for new patterns that are not listed in this catalog.
Thank you for your loyal patronage and for helping us reach this major milestone, our 26
th
Anniversary.
We look forward to serving you in the coming months. We hope that you will find something here that
meets your own personal tastes and needs.
Sincerely yours,
The staff of Kennedy Concrete, Inc.

Antiquing and Painting..
Important Information
2
Have a bucket of clear water and several rags
or sponges available. Using a damp rag
(sponge), wipe the still fresh paint from the
piece. Rinse the rag frequently. The more
you wipe, the more paint you will remove.
You want to remove enough paint to bring
out the finer detail in the paver. Let dry.
3
Apply another coat of sealer.
4
Admire you work.
For best results, read all product labels carefully.
Please follow all safety precautions on the labels.
SURFACE PREPARATION: For best results, surface
must be clean. Clean surface with rubbing alcohol,
diluted ammonia solution, or diluted muriatic acid.
After cleaning, rinse with plenty of water.
PAINT: Use only paints designated for exterior use.
Any high quality exterior latex paint should give you
years of service. We have had good results with a paint
called “Patio Paint™” by DecoArt™. This paint is
formulated for outdoor use on concrete.
SEALING AS FIRST STEP: Most instructions do not
call for sealing the paver before painting. If you use
“Finish Perfect™ Concrete Lawn Ornament Sealer”,
you are to seal the paver after cleaning. (This is the
method we recommend, because it has proven to give
excellent results.) Let the sealer dry.
OPTIONAL SECOND STEP; Some people paint the
entire paver with a base coat (usually white, but other
colors can be used). Others skip the base coat and use
the pavers natural color as the base coat. If you paint,
let the paint dry.
There are several ways to colorize your pavers. The
ways are usually split into two categories; antiquing
and painting.
Antiquing
Antique finishes usually use two colors to bring out the
detail in a paver.
Before proceeding be sure to follow the Important
Information instructions.
1
Keep in mind that when this step is finished, the
next step (step 2) must immediately follow this
step. Spray or paint the item with a light coat of
contrasting color (usually black, but other colors
can be used for different effects).
40
Painting
Painting will add true color and depth to your
paver and make all of the fine details stand out.
Before proceeding be sure to follow the
Important Information instructions.
This is actually a simple process. You can use
any of the standard painting practices that are
used to paint other artwork (rags, paint brush, or
air spray). The advantage to painting decorative
pavers is that the art work is already done. You
only have to add the color.
After you have painted your piece, seal it.
MAINTENANCE: It is usually a good idea to
apply a coat of sealer to you artwork every two
years or whenever it looks like the sealer is
weathering off (This last statement is especially
true if your piece is subject to traffic.).
“Finish Perfect™ Concrete Lawn Ornament Sealer” is
available in Matte, Semi Gloss, and Gloss Finishes.
Packaged in 8 and 16 ounce, and 1 and 5 gallon containers.
“Patio Paint™” is available in 2 ounce bottles (48 colors)
8 ounce bottles (18 colors) and gallons.
“Sandstone” (Adds a stonelike texture to your piece) is
available in 4 oz.,16 oz., and 32 oz. bottles (15 colors).

PLANNING - Make a diagram of the area
to be paved. Layout the dimensions on the
diagram. This will help you determine the
quantity of materials required for your job.
Caution: Measurement listed for a product
are often modular measurements. i.e. an
18” paver can actually
measure anywhere from 17”
to 18 1/2”. Check the accrual
size of the pavers you will be
using.


LAYOUT - Check area to
make sure there are no
underground pipes or cables
that your stakes or digging
might hit. Stake out your area
4” wider than the planned
area. Use stakes and run strings to use as
straight edges to lay your pavers along.
Note: Make sure you allow for water
drainage away from buildings. (a slope of
1 inch in 4 feet to, but not less than, 1 inch
in 10 feet)
For heavier traffic:
Depth will be: Paving stones thickness + 1”
of sand or ashes. + 2” of stone. Sand & stone
are to be compacted.
Auto traffic:
Depth to be: Paving stone thickness + 1” of
sand+ 4” to 6” of stone. (The sand
& stone must be mechanically
compacted. (Compactors can be
rented from a local tool rental
store)).
Note: You can increase the strength
of your job, if you make the sand
layer a damp cement mix (1 part
cement of 5 parts sand).


EXCAVATE - Keep in mind that a paved
area is no better than the base it is laid on.
Spend the necessary time of getting the
base just right. This will make the laying
of the pavers easier and the area will give
You years of satisfactory service.
The depth and composition of the base will
depend on the use of the paved area. For all
uses, remove all vegetation.
 For pedestrian traffic:
If the ground is solid and has good
drainage. Depth required will be:
Paving stone thickness + thin layer of
San or, Ashes..
41
4 LAYING METHODS -There
are several methods of laying
paving stones:
Laying on sand - Spread your layer of
sand, level and compact. Then lay your
pavers on this bed, if you need to level you
can put in extra sand.
Laying on a dry mortar mix. - Mix a 1 part
cement to 5 parts sand mix (add no water).
Place a thin layer on your compacted bed.
Rack the thin layer leaving small peaks
and troughs. Place the pavers on this bed
and tamp with a rubber mallet or regular
hammer with a board. (Do not strike too
hard so that you don’t break the paver. If
the paver is not level remove or add
material in the base. The tamping is only
to ensure that the mortar mix touches the
entire base of the paver.)
Guidelines for installation


6
6
Five spot Mortar Bed - This method
involves putting 5 generous spots of mortar
on the compacted sand bed (One in each
corner and one in the middle). The mortar
is 1 part cements to 5 parts mortar sand and
enough water to make the mix “workable”.
The mortar should spread out with light
tamping on the paver. (see note above)
JOINTS: Paving is intended to be butt-jointed;
however, if one desires jointed, it is done once
the paving is set.
In climates that do not have a lot of freeze thaw
cycles per winter season, a dry mix of 1 part
cement to 3 parts dry sand is used to fill joints.
This mix is placed on the dry pavers and swept
into the joints. All of the mix is removed from
the pavers and the area is very lightly sprinkled
with water.
Another method, is to use one of the new polymeric sands. These are excellent in keeping
sand in place and moving under freeze-thaw
conditions
CUTTING: The best advice in this area is, try
to lay out the paved area so that there is no
cutting. If pavers must be cut, the best way is
with a circular saw equipped with a diamond
blade (available at most building supply
outlets). Do not try to cut all the way through
the paver. Score each side of paver (depth
depends on paver thickness, but 1/4” to 1/2” is
usually enough). Place the scored paver over a
wooden block and tap with a hammer.
SEALING: It is not necessary to seal your
pavers, but sealing does provide protection.
A sealed paver has a better chance of weathering
freeze-thaw cycles, holding up from acid rain
and carbonization, dirt is easier to remove, and
usually looks better. Some sealers make the
paver more slippery or make it less slippery.
Finish Perfect Concrete Lawn Ornament Sealer
(can be used on pavers) is one that we use
because it reduces the slipperiness of the pavers).
Always test your sealer on a small area, so that if
something goes wrong it will not affect the over-
42
all appearance of your pavement. (Some
sealers will change the color of the pavers.)
Clean the pavers with diluted ammonia
water or muriatic acid (Please observe all
safety instructions on the labels). Wash
cleaner off with plenty of water.
Apply your sealer following the instruction
on the label.
WARNING: This information is provided as a
guide to help you and is not intended to be a
thorough, detailed installation guide. There are
books available at the library, book stores, and
building supply yards that provide complete instructions, with all the necessary safety
information.
Always use common sense around your paving
job. Use all the necessary safety equipment to
protect yourself and those around you. Watch
children around your work area. Falling pavers,
tools, and even your excavation can injure a
child (and even adults).
After finishing your job, we want you to look
back at it with pride and satisfaction, so please
be carefully.
Raw material variations can affect the final
product colors. Always check the actual color
of the product at your local retailer.
