Kingsville Archives Report
Kingsville Archives
Marie Frise, our 2014 summer student, will be returning this summer to the Kingsville Archives for 8
weeks. We are delighted to have her back again! Marie is a history student at Western and she has now
completed 2 years of her Honours B.A.
When she returns to the Archives, Marie will be receiving an intensive one week of mentoring (June 22 –
June 26). The program will be designed to upgrade her skills in local history, and genealogy. She will
also be learning how to process manuscript materials and to understand legal records. This summer, she
will be helping patrons, working on processing our Manuscript Collection, organizing Gosfield Land
Records and updating indexes for these documents, as well as researching the lives of 25 people who
lived in Kingsville.
Thanks to the money provided by the Summer Canada program, Marie will be working 30 hours per
week. Starting Monday June 29, she will be opening the Archives Monday to Friday, 9 am. to noon and
12:30 to 3:30 pm. Her last day will be Friday August 14, 2015. The room will be closed on Wednesday
July 1st and Civic Holiday Monday August 3.
Marie will be available by phone at 226-348-6377; by email at [email protected]; or in
person during the hours listed above.
Regular Hours will resume the week of August 18th.
Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-12 noon and 1-3 pm.
Changes in September
Starting September 1st, 2015, the responsibility for the daily operations of the Kingsville Archives will be
shared by the three members of the Archives Committee – Bob Lynch, Pat Ford, and Marilyn ArmstrongReynolds rather than being under the direction of the Archivist.
Marilyn Armstrong-Reynolds will be stepping down from the position of Archivist after 10 years. She
not only has been the Kingsville Archives only Archivist, but Marilyn was the driving force behind the
creation and development of the Kingsville Archives. No one will be holding the position of Archivist
during the coming year.
The Archives Committee is pleased to announce that Karyn Mannell has been named Genealogy
Specialist and Librarian. She will be responsible for developing our genealogy collection, answering
genealogy questions and looking after our library collection. Karyn is also a member of our Open House
Committee.
Volunteers Needed
Selecting and Clipping Newspaper Articles
Are you a regular reader of the Windsor Star? Do you naturally look for Kingsville area news? Do you
always check out the obituaries to see if anyone local died? We are looking for volunteers who regularly
read the Windsor Star and would like to help us on occasion.
Your task would be to volunteer to read the newspaper for one or two weeks at a time. If you see any
articles related to Kingsville, you would have to mark down the name of the newspaper, the date, and the
page number on all articles. Your only other task is to cut out these articles and bring them to the
Kingsville Archives at the end of your marking and cutting period.
You may have as few as one or two articles per day or as many as 10 articles to mark and clip, so it is
not a large job. On average, there are between 20 and 30 articles per week.
If you would think you can do this and would like to give it a try, please contact Barb at 519-733-.6207
or send a message to [email protected]. She will set up a time for you to volunteer.
Barb is responsible for making sure that the Windsor Star is clipped all year. She needs your help if we
want to keep our vertical files useful and up to date.
Moving Heavy Boxes of Books
We also need someone strong who would be willing to lift 30 pound boxes of books that are in storage
and move them to the Kingsville Archives. We usually only move books once or twice per year. If you
are interested, please contact Barb at 519-733-6207.
