Seborrheaic Dermatitis- how you can control the Flaky SCALP condition... Tags : curing scalp flakes | dandruff | eczema | hairloss | natural cure for dandruff | psoriasis| root2tip.com | Seborrheic Dermatitis/scalp eczema/ Do I have Seborrhoeic Dermatitis? According to Wikipedia, its defined as: Seborrhoeic dermatitis (also seborrheic dermatitis , seborrhea) (also known as "seborrheic eczema"[1]) is an inflammatory[2]skin disorder affecting the scalp, face, and torso. Typically, seborrheic dermatitis presents with scaly, flaky, itchy, red skin. It particularly affects the sebum-gland rich areas of skin. In adolescents and adults, seborrhoeic dermatitis usually presents as scalp scaling (dandruff). In other words it is: A series of dry, itchy, flaky patches, that vary in size and thickness that usually occur on the scalp, especially around the hair margins in the front and on the sides and in the back of the head. It can also appear on the skin, behind the ears and on eyebrows. Classic flakes on the scalp DISCLAIMER: All information provided should not be taken as MEDICAL advice, but opinion, personal experience and research undertaken by ROOT2TiP.com. Does it cause Hair loss? The condition itself does not cause hair-loss, However the constant rubbing, itching and scratching of the hair can begin to thin around the edges. If left untreated the scaling or flakes really build up and when they lift up, in my experience that can cause hair-loss!! Who can get it?? Up to 30% of the population is affected with Seborrheaic dermatitis, but most do not know the condition by name. It can come and go with flare ups occurring during the winter months when it is cooler and drier. It can also flare up in association with stress and anxiety, such as that due to exams in school, deadlines at work or hormonal changes, sales quotas to meet, or financial difficulties. The very first sign of the condition is even seen in babies, Cradle cap is a mild version of the condition. This condition does not spread by transferring it from one part of the body to another or from person to person. It is genetic and frequently affects multiple family members in different generations. Curing and controlling...Seborrheaic Dermatitis In my experience there is no flat-out cure for Seborrheaic Dermatitis however these are the tips I want to share that helped me to control and keep my condition at bay! 1) Get a prescribed shampoo from the doctors, I used to use: The shampoo- I recommend! About Nizoral: Clinical studies have shown that Nizoral can also stimulate hair growth; with one study showing that 2% ketoconazole (Nizorals primary DISCLAIMER: All information provided should not be taken as MEDICAL advice, but opinion, personal experience and research undertaken by ROOT2TiP.com. ingredient) was as effective as minoxidil at treating male hair-loss! I liked the shampoo for controlling the itching, flakes and cleansing the scalp. However I did not like the DRYING effect it had on my hair so my tips are to avoid that effect: Slather your hair in conditioner, leaving a cm of hair near to the scalp clear. If your hair is long enough, braid the hair in 4 loose sections. You will leave these in whilst you was the scalp. (this will eliminate tangling) Dilute 1oz of the shampoo in a cup of water, this will make it easier to apply to the scalp. Pour the diluted shampoo over the scalp and gently massage in, do Not Scratch, you don't want to cut your scalp. Leave the shampoo on the scalp for 5-8 minutes, it needs time to penetrate the flakes. Proceed to wash out, loosening 1 braid at a time to wash away any flakes that may have come away and travelled down into your braided hair. Finally follow up with a Deep Conditioning treatment, at least 1 x a week! Repeat this shampoo technique every other day, until the flakes have sufficiently been removed. Hydrating the scalp to help with the itching/lessen flakes: In order to control the sometimes embarrassing flakes on my scalp I also created my own oil, now called the SCALP Hydration Serum, available at Pak's cosmetics, or online at www.root2tip.com. The oil is 100% Natural, and it soothes the scalp, stops itching and helps to re-grow thinning hair. The Scalp Hydration Serum contains the natural mineral SULFUR, which is a key ingredient I believe in controlling Seborrheaic Dermatitis, and also other scalp conditions, like Psoriasis ( which is a chronic immune-mediated disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells.) Testimonial: I heard about this product from a friend of mine who suffered with really bad dandruff like me. I also read some really good reviews on Facebook so I bought it to try. I loved that it was 100% Natural. I have been using it now for 4 months and I have no flakes, or itching and I LOVE IT!! I have sister-locs and I use it 3 x a week. I tell everyone about it. Berniece Lewis, Luton, Beds, UK Why it works on the scalp?? The Sulfur extract is in a base of scalp loving vegetable oils that are non-comodegenic (non-pore blocking), and will provide enough hydration to stop itching, coupled with an essential oil extract that helps to stimulate growth. KEY INGREDIENT: Sulfur FACTS: Sulfur helps calm inflamed, irritated skin, preventing it from flaking off as dandruff. Sulfur has a KERATOLYTIC effect- Keratolytic therapy thins the skin on and around the lesion. It causes the outer layer of the skin to loosen and shed. Keratolytics (salicylic acid and sulfur) can also be used in the treatment of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Sulphur and salicylate: 2% sulphur emulsion is a very commonly prescribed item to control thick scalp psoriasis for its keratolytic effect. ALOPECIA/ HAIR LOSS/ BALDNESS/ THINNING HAIR ? What is it? Alopecia means loss of hair from the head or body. Alopecia can mean baldness, a term generally reserved for pattern alopecia or androgenic alopecia. Compulsive pulling of hair (trichotillomania) can also produce hair loss. Hairstyling routines such as tight ponytails or braids may induce Traction alopecia. Both hair relaxer solutions, and hot hair irons can also induce hair loss. In some cases, alopecia is due to underlying medical conditions, [1] (Wikipedia) such as iron deficiency. Do you have it? ROOT Energizer/Scalp Hydration Serum serum | Hair-loss | losing your hair-line | re-growth/Balding hair/Baldspots Help...I think I am losing my hair! It’s pretty true, but most people assume that it is only men who suffer from hair loss, but this could not be further from the truth. Although it is quite true in relation to hereditary hair loss, millions of women world-wide, suffer from some form of hair loss and the number appears to be rising each year. The overwhelming cause is a hereditary condition called androgenetic alopecia or female-pattern hair loss. One of the least engaging facts about getting older is that a significant number of women also experience hair loss. All women have some of the male hormone testosterone in their bodies, but women with androgenetic alopecia are more sensitive to the hormone. This sensitivity causes hair to thin all over the head, and some women develop thinning patches similar to male-pattern hair loss. One of the most traumatic experiences a woman could endure in her life would be baldness. Hair thinning or slight hair loss is bad enough but total baldness can be completely heart-breaking. ‘There are thousands of women around the country who suffer with hair-loss problems. Traction Alopecia-(hair-line hair-loss) In a society where wearing hair extensions has now become second nature to many young teenage girls and women, you do not have to look far to see a girl/woman who has lost her hair-line- subsequently called ' Traction Alopecia' this is very common but wholly preventable among ethnic women. This type of hair-loss is self induced, through how we do our hair, or sometimes it can be inflicted by parents (in mis-guided ignorance) onto their children, who have no control over their hair styles. A severe example of traction alopecia caused by tight/ weaves/braids. This is wholly PREVENTABLE by SMARTWEAVING! The picture above has become so common placed in high-street salons, whereby the problem is not treated but just covered up by sometimes reckless hairdressers with a weave/wig-cap that will only serve to distress the remaining hair/hair-line! How to prevent this happening to you: 1. When wearing ponytails don't scrape the hair up so tightly you get a face-lift! – (especially if you have a thin hair-line...try to do it loosely, or leave the hairline free- to protect and keep it!) 2. When getting a weave done, ensure the hair-line is left out and the canerows are not done too tightly. (Speak up- tell the stylist- if you feel a tightness, no style is worth losing your hair for) 3. If you have braid extensions make sure they do not pull on the delicate hairs around your hair-line, it’s better to have to re-do them if they look messy, (if put in loosely), than to lose your hairline when the hair comes out with the extension when removed. Over time if the hair-line is constantly stressed- the hair is permanently lost- but if caught in time the hair can be nurtured to re-grow with consistent attention, growth stimulating oils and regular massaging of the area . Note the WARNING SIGNS: If you ever get those tiny white bumps around the edge of your hairline where the hair is being pulled- then this is a warning sign- your scalp is being damaged- the hair is literally being pulled from the root! loosen your hair immediately if in exstensions/braids or a weave and massage the area to avoid permanent scalp scarring and hair-loss. Parents Please Note: As you control the styling of your child’s precious tresses...make sure that you do not damage the hairline for that 'cute hairstyle'. A child/toddlers hair is even more susceptible to damage- so keep the styling loose. Leave the hair-line tension free Avoid cornrow styles that pull the hair away from the face and create tension on the follicles. Avoid tight ponytails and bobble styles If your child says their hair is tight- Listen to them! Beauty does not mean PAIN where hair is concerned. Adopt styles that leave the hair and moreso scalp stress-free, like free flowing twists, without the use of exstensions and please NO WEAVES! This innocent looking style is already causing breakage around this child's fragile hair-line, by pulling away from the hairline... A simple hair-line loving hairstyle...using bobbles that contain no metal bits! Alopecia Areata: This is another common form of hair-loss affecting ethnic women, it forms small circular bald spots over the crown of the head, it can be quite distressing as is all hair-loss, but it can grow back, and does so in 90% of patients. However if you feel you are suffering with this type of hair-loss, you should not be using any type of chemical on your scalp. I have witnessed over-zealous and un-educated hairdressers too often perming the remaining hair on a lady with this problem! Ridiculous. Alopecia areata (Patchy hairloss) DISCLAIMER: All information provided should not be taken as MEDICAL advice, but opinion, personal experience and research undertaken by ROOT2TiP.com. What Causes it? Alopecia areata is not contagious. It occurs more frequently in people who have affected family members, suggesting that heredity may be a factor. In addition, it is slightly more likely to occur in people who have relatives with autoimmune diseases. The condition is thought to be an autoimmune disorder, in which the body attacks its own hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. Other forms of hair-loss/Alopecia Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, another hair-loss condition common among ethnic women, is characterized by circle-shaped balding at the crown toward the front of the head. Many trichologists blame this condition on the sometimes outrageous things we do to our hair with tension, heat and chemicals. You can prevent hair loss conditions such as CCCA by learning simple hair loss prevention methods. LOOK-out for Signs and symptoms of centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) Questions to ask yourself: Is your scalp dry, flaky and sensitive after getting your hair relaxed? Does your scalp get sore? Are you noticing any thinning on the top of your head? Do you use heated styling tools every day? How did centrifugal cicatricial alopecia cause me to lose my hair? One such form of this type of alopecia occurs from the relaxer process at the hairdresser, such as the application of a relaxer that was over processed and may eventually cause the hairs to just break off mid-shaft. In such cases the inflammatory condition and permanent scarring of the skin can damage hair follicles to the point of killing them, thereby causing hair loss. The bottom line on centrifugal cicatricial alopecia Therapeutic options for sufferers range from changing current hair styling practices or products to the use of specific medical treatments to, in severe cases where hair loss is permanent, undergoing hair replacement surgery. If you notice any signs of oversensitivity, such as itchiness, redness or flaking directly after a treatment at the hair-salon, definitely report this to your stylist. You may need further neutralisation able to neutralise or reverse the process. And she (and you) should make a note of what did not work for your hair, so she can try a different formula the next time. Otherwise find a more professional hair-stylist. Finally, if you experience burns, scalp sensitivity or hair thinning of any kind, make an appointment with your dermatologist. Light At the end of the tunnel: It can GROW back!
