For this project, External Venetian Blinds with
Motorisation and Motorised Roller Shades using
OptimaScreen™ were installed.
External Venetian Blinds with Motorisation
With external blinds, transfer of heat to interior is
minimal resulting in the lowest shading coefficients of
any window treatment. They also control light diffusion
and eliminate glare. External blinds can be raised and
lowered depending on weather conditions. Their angle
of tilt can be regulated to keep direct sunlight out and
let natural daylight in as required. From the user’s point
of view they offer complete flexibility.

The aim is to provide consumers with a recognisable place to go to purchase window coverings, that is synonymous

Rick Langille, President
of ESI, a Hunter Douglas

Canada and graduated from
the University of Manitoba.
His strength is in the
motorisation and automation
of window covering products.
In the late 90s’, together with another colleague,
they invented a better control system for the
automation of all types of window coverings. In
2007, they became part of the Hunter Douglas
global motorisation team.
Today, Rick travels frequently to the Hunter Douglas’
worldwide companies in over 100 countries to
introduce and train staff on the new Hunter Douglas
motorisation systems.
Electronic Solutions, Inc. (ESI) is the leading producer
of intelligent motor controls for motorised products.
In the early 1990s, Gary Skinner and Rick Langille set
out with an entrepreneurial spirit to fill a growing need
for intelligent controls for motorised products. With the

American market where the
first generation of quiet motors
was launched. After great successes in the USA,
Frederic returned to Europe where the same strategy
has been successfully implemented. During these
initial years Frederic developed a strong relationship
with ESI (a Hunter Douglas company) with whom he
collaborated on many international markets.
A French National, currently living in Barcelona,
Spain, Frederic participates in triathlons and enjoys
travelling both professionally and privately.
Conversations With Rick Langille and
Frederic Kaspar
What is the benefit of using Hunter Douglas
automation system vs other systems? Any
differentiating factors?
RL: ESI systems are universal. One control serves the
needs to almost every motorised shading application.
Many other controls are available that require specific
parts to achieve specific operations. ESI’s “RQ” control
does it all in one tiny, efficient package. Offering basic
operation from an IR or RF remote control, all the way
up to full bi-directional feedback operation for the most
complex commercial buildings, “RQ” is built to serve
every market worldwide. RQ control is now available in
both individual modules and imbedded inside AC motors:
an extremely unique approach to the market. ESI has
developed all of its products coming from a shading
and automation back ground. This is also unique and
serves the window coverings industry from a different
perspective than traditional sources.
FK: We are very particular about reliability and quality
and the only way to make a reliable motor is to control
your suppliers at 100% and to have them close by.
Most of our competitors, even the biggest one, have
taken the decision to relocate their assembly plant or
to buy components from Asia. We have also made a
million euro investment in an automatic production line
where 10 different robots assemble 90% of the motor.
This allows us to reduce human intervention and to
increase quality.
With regards to Blind motors we have been the first to
release a quiet motor and that was 8 years ago in the
US market. Even if some of our competitors are trying to
compete with similar products none of them can offer more
than one quiet motor while we have a range. Furthermore
our motors will stay quiet over time while other motors said
to be “quiet” will get louder and louder over time.
The motor's low sound output is the result of precise
engineering and not of padding tricks to hide the noise.
What is the benefit of using tubular motor?
FK: Tubular motors are used because there is no room on
the side of the shade but there is plenty within the tube
since it is hollow. The technology behind tubular motors is
more advanced than what people think because the motor
must have precise end limits, powerful enough to lift the
weight and be fast in case of roller blinds. On top of that
the motor must be protected against overheating since it
is located within an aluminium tube and therefore gets very
hot quickly. There is a protection within the motor which
shuts it off at 140 degrees. This is regulated by a lot of
countries like Europe (CE or TUV), USA (UL), China (CCC)
etc. We are certified in all the countries where it is required.
I would like to point out the benefits of Hunter Douglas
motors because this is the most important. We must think
in terms of control and not simply the motor.
1. Level 1: S series – simple motors to be controlled by
a switch
2. Level 2: RF series – Electronic radio motor with a
unique technology of mesh networking allowing full
control from any location within the building or the
house.
3. Level 3: Q series – Electronic motors fitted with
exclusive technology allowing installation in thousand
motor jobs where all blinds are connected via a bus
line. The Q motors are also perfect for any integration
in a home automation system.

What are some of the future plans?
RL: The future is simply amazing. The introduction of HD
RF in Singapore in April was a great success, showing
the first touch sensitive RF remote control ever invented.
The touch sense feature combined with the 802.15.4
RF networks make the future of RF motors very bright.
The robust “Wi-Fi” like network is the firm foundation in
which smart phone access to shade control is being built
on. Very soon, a user will no longer need to purchase
a remote control that is dedicated to the operation of
shades! They will simply use their smart phones to
operate them!

The interior designers and architects will submit their projects to qualify for entry to this
Regional Asian competition (competing with other Asian countries).
Five winners from the Asian category will win an all expense paid trip to the Design
Capital of The World, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Amsterdam houses the internationally
renowned Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy and Stedelijk Museum which features works of
art from the prominent De Stijl design group to the young avant-garde Dutch designers
- Maarten Baas and Tord Boontje.
All winning entries will also be featured in the Hunter Douglas coffee table book,
WINDOWS Shades of Luxury Living (3rd Edition).
