NEWSLETTER Vol 22 Issue 5 30 April, 2015 INNOVATE ACHIEVE INSPIRE 109 Coronata Drive, WARNBRO WA 6169 Telephone: (08) 9593 4022 Facsimile: (08) 9593 4027 Email: [email protected] Web: www.kooranaps.wa.edu.au NAPLAN Testing Beginning the week of Monday May 11, all students in years three and five will take part in the 2015 National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Classroom teachers, specialist teachers and support staff have been working with all students on a whole school approach in preparing our students to attempt these tasks to the best of their ability with confidence and with a ‘have a go’ attitude. Reporting To Parents: Parent Interviews We will be holding parent interviews on Wednesday 1st July from 12:30 – 5:30. You will be able to meet your child’s classroom teacher and be given their school report for Semester One. Meeting times will be scheduled in 10 minute blocks. More information will be coming home in the next couple of weeks regarding booking times. AUSTRALIAN EARLY DEVELOPMENT CENSUS (AEDC) A nation-wide program called the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) will take place in May – July 2015. The AEDC looks at how young children are developing in the years before they begin school. In 2009 and 2012, the AEDC was completed nationally collecting information on over 500,000 children in their first year of full time school. The AEDC takes place every three years. In WA information will be collected on pre-primary children. Pre-primary teachers will complete the AEDC questionnaire for each child in their class and enter information into a secure web-based data entry system that protects the privacy of all children. Information entered is based on the teacher’s knowledge and observations of their students and children are not required to be present while data is entered. The AEDC results are reported back to the community based on the suburb or locality where children live, so individual children cannot be identified. The results help communities understand how their children are developing and where improvements can be made to give children the best start in life. Parents of pre-primary students will receive a letter about our schools involvement in the coming weeks. You can find out more at www.aedc.gov.au Staffing Ms Karina Magill has accepted a full time position at another school. We welcome Mrs Vanessa Gissing who has been appointed for the remainder of the year to work with Mrs Hermans in 4.4. Car Park Safety Unfortunately we have had some theft in our school and our car parks seem to be a target for unsavoury behaviour. Please be vigilant when leaving your car and hide or take all personal belongings and lock up. If you see any suspicious behaviour please report it to the front office. ANZAC Our ANZAC service was held on 24th April and I would like to congratulate the students on their behaviour and to thank our invited guests for participating. School Board Our School Board (staff and parent component) will meet next week. Part of our discussion will be deciding who will be our community representative on the Board will be. I will keep you up to date as decisions are made. Annual Report Each year every school is required to prepare an Annual Report that summarises key aspects of its operation during the previous school year. The reports for all schools are available on line. A copy of the 2014 Annual Report is available from the school office. School Dress Code We encourage student to wear school uniforms as this sets the high standards we are aiming to maintain across the school. The dress code plays an important role in promoting a positive image of Koorana PS and creating a sense of identity among our students. Margaret Gold, PRINCIPAL SPORTS NEWS Congratulations to the girls Koorana soccer team who competed in the Perth glory cup on Wednesday 22nd April. It was a fantastic day and competition. The girls were a credit to the school and showed a great attitude towards the game. The girls showed great spirit throughout the day despite losing their first 3 games, however they won their final game from a great piece of individual skill from Lara Woods to score the winning goal. The girls finished 6th overall. The teams player of the day from Koorana School was Kelsey Ramage for her performance and determination throughout the competition . Well done to all the girls that took part.
