All are invited, members and friends. Please try to arrive by 7pm. We will set up and sit down to eat soon after 7pm followed by all-request dancing from 8pm to 10:30. Do bring a dish or drinks to share, and please provide a serving spoon, if needed. On March 20th and 27th, we are pleased that Sue Williard will return to Kopachka for two weeks of guest-teaching. This is Sue’s third engagement with us. Sue is both a wonderful dancer and a skilled teacher, with much enthusiasm and energy, who has previously taught at the Kolo Festival and at the Lark Camp at Mendocino Woodlands. Do remember: On March 27th we will be dancing at Scout Hall (177 E. Blithedale Ave.), not at the Strawberry Recreation Center, which is booked for a previously scheduled event. On April 24th Kopachka will host its ‘Hardly Strictly Balkan’ Spring Dance Party, with one of our favorite bands, Guest Teacher Anke Koelman at Kopachka Jan. 30 Zabava! Zabava! last played for us in October 2013 and they were a big hit. Now, we will be able to have our party at the spacious Strawberry Recreation Center, with its sprung wooden dance floor. If you attended our party with Bulgarika this past October, then you know what a great venue this is for live music dance parties. Tell your friends! Zabava! is one of the Bay Area’s premier Balkan dance bands, and were a major success at the 2014 Kolo Festival. The band, whose name means ‘party’, plays energetic and rhythmically dazzling music in the Bulgarian, Greek, Macedonian, and Romani traditions. These musicians recreate the vibrant interplay of traditional music and dance from the cultural crossroads of the southern Balkans. Along with Bill Cope (gajda, bouzouki, tambura, accordion, vocals), Zabava! features Corinne Sykes (vocals, tambura, tupan, darabuka), Michele Simon (vocals, baglama, tupan, hand drum), Rich Schultz (kaval), and Tom Farris (tambura, guitar, hand drum). Finally, I would like to thank all who have volunteered to help keep Kopachka running. The next Board meeting is scheduled for April 26th. If you have any concerns or suggestions regarding club matters please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the other Board members, to bring up issues that you would like the Board to consider. Who knows what joy they may spark in others, however? With that said, it’s a great time for everyone to join in with a bit of spring-cleaning. Lucky Sheehan and I are in charge, respectively, of the Mendocino Folklore Camp bazaar and auctions this summer and are seeking donations (tax write-offs) of your still ‘joyful’ folkdance outfits, accessories, authentic souvenirs, prints, jewelry, hangings, …anything ‘ethnic’! Please bring them by any Friday AND join us and other Kopachka members at camp too! My all time favorite folk dance teacher, Yves Moreau, will be teaching Bulgarian dance. Plus there will be English Country & French-Canadian dance teachers and so much more.
