KPLA Conference Program - Kentucky Public Library Association

KPLA/KLTRT Spring Conference March 16-18, 2015 Griffin Gate Marriott Resort & Spa, Lexington, KY
Close your eyes.
Imagine every conference you’ve attended over the
years. What thoughts do you have when you hear the
word “conference?” Do you think of networking with
fellow professionals? Attending a multi-day stream
of presentations? Stocking up on vendor freebies?
Dominating after hours trivia? All of the above maybe?
I know what I think of when I hear “conference.” The
number three. I always go in with a plan to look for
three ideas that inspire me. If I can come back with
three ideas that are actionable, or lead to amazing programs, then the conference was well worth my while.
The problem is, despite the wide range of offerings at a
general conference, three is not always a slam dunk for me when it comes to true inspiration.
That’s because I’m guessing which sessions will spark my imagination, just as the planners are
guessing what I’ll be looking for in the first place. It’s all too easy to end up in sessions which
may be interesting, but don’t really get my engine running or speak to my needs. It’s too bad
conferences can’t predict where Jim Blanton’s personal interests lie? Or can they?
Our planning team set out to answer that question, and in the process shake things up a bit.
This year we’re incorporating an “unconference” track. Unconferences feature open discussions where the participants set the agenda. You are in the driver’s seat, exploring the issues
in which you’re most interested, rather than hoping that the planners are able to predict what
you’ll want. We’ll still have traditional tracks covering a variety of topics, but now you’ll have a
more direct alternative in shaping the structure of your conference.
Additionally we’ve provided sections throughout the guide, challenging you to consider three
elements related to what inspires you in the sessions you attend. For each we hope you’ll note:
1. What do I want to do?
2. What is standing in my way?
3. What do I do first?
When you get back to home base, you’ll have starting points for an action plan to pursue what
inspired you during the conference.
Finally, you’ll notice that our theme this year is Let Your Passion Be Our Guide. It seems
every year we make reference to the challenges we face with regard to our future. This year
has been about as dramatic as one could imagine, but one thing remains true – our hopes for
a vibrant future rest on embracing our passion for what we do. We’ve asked our presenters
to share their passion, and we hope that in shaking things up a bit we’ve provided an exciting
opportunity for you to explore your own unique passions at the conference.
In closing I’d like to say thanks to my fantastic planning team for embracing a new course and
putting forth a tremendous effort! Also, I want to thank you for attending and being part of
the experiment – I hope you have a great conference and come away with new ideas to keep
fueling your passion!

instead, attendees arrive ready to participate and facilitate topics
of discussion that most interest them. Potential topics could
include youth services, eBooks, open source software, mobile
devices, social media, local history, programming languages, and
many more! Topics will be selected on the day of the training.
Participants will earn CE credit.

session of interest. Also, some programs may have overlapping tracks.
Don’t miss the chance to hear directly from library staff about
the topics that matter to you!
Room Size/Program Attendance
Get Ignited!
Some sessions will fill up quickly. Fire codes prevent
the addition of chairs or sitting on the floor or blocking the doors. If you come into a room that is crowded,
please observe these cautions. Also, please be aware
that leaving in the middle of a session is disruptive to
the presenter and to the other attendees in the room.
If you have questions about a session, please contact
a conference committee member or ask the presenter
prior to the session.
Need new ideas to spark your creativity? Have 50 minutes to
spare? The brave participants of this all lightning-round session
will condense their knowledge into 10 5-minute presentations.

LFPL is a U.S. Patent and Trademark Resource Center. In this role, LFPL
provides unique access to patents/trademarks records and training opportunities, such as workshops and 1-1 consultations.
In this session learn how to give a workshop for the independent inventor
or entrepreneur. Will we cover the differences between copyright, patents,
and trademarks and discuss tips for searching patents/trademarks online.
Informative discussion highlighting strategies for teaching technology to
senior citizens who often lack basic understanding of the Internet or the
Microsoft Windows environment. In recent years, devices like laptops,
tablets and smartphones have made content available to library patrons
who are unable to read traditional print sources. Meanwhile Web 2.0
technologies can reduce the isolation experienced by the homebound
population. Technology has the potential to enrich older patrons’ lives.

and a Few Extra Bits
Sooner or later your library will face a legal challenge, stemming from a
personnel issue, construction, patron injury, discrimination, or any number
of different avenues. While the challenge may be inevitable, defeat is not
-- if your library is properly prepared. This presentation will help you
prepare to face these challenges before they are presented, to place your
institution on firmer defensive ground. Time will be allowed for questions.
How do you manage change while staying sane? We’ll look at strategies
for staff and stakeholder engagement, ideas for keeping what works and
pitching what doesn’t, and tips for keeping a positive momentum going.
Join us for an introduction to 3D printers! Library staff will guide us
through the technical details and discuss the benefits of having a 3D
printer, both for patrons and for the library. We’ll have several printers
in the room so you can see them in action. Learn more about 3D printers
and if one is right for your library!

Public libraries are well positioned to be leaders in computer coding education for all ages. Public libraries have a long history teaching the public
how to use computers and navigate the Internet. By including coding
programs at your library, you will extend the educational paradigm to fill a
vital need to produce more developers, since many students will not have
the opportunity to learn along their formal education track.
Not every children’s librarian is a crafting genius - nor should they have
to be. If you are tired of the “same old” ideas, but want to strike a balance
between tradition and the excitement of the maker movement & 21st
century learning skills, then this presentation is for you! Be prepared
to share your questions, experiences, struggles, and successes in this
participatory, discussion-oriented program.

Daviess County Public Library, in partnership with Henderson Public
Library, has launched an online ePublishing program called ePublish or

writing/ePublishing process, providing them with tools and resources to
produce their works, and creating a promotional track that they can travel
in libraries across the state. Come learn about the program and find out
how you can be a partner and join the revolution!

Kentucky’s libraries are seeing unprecedented usage, but in different ways
than we have seen in the past. Everyone is struggling with how to meet
the needs in our communities while preparing for the future. Hear about
a plan provided by the prestigious Aspen Institute that builds on our
work to ensure that libraries are essential for communities in the future.
In the first part of this two-part series, Rachel Folz -- Campbell County
Public Library’s Digital Marketing Manager -- will discuss library-specific
uses for each major social media platform.

CONFERENCE
Join us for the KPLA Unconference! In an Unconference, the schedule
is not determined beforehand; instead, attendees arrive ready to participate and facilitate topics of discussion that most interest them. Potential
topics could include youth services, eBooks, open source software, mobile
devices, social media, local history, programming languages, and many
more! Topics will be selected on the day of the training.
What do I want to do?
What’s standing in my way?
INNOVATIONS
In 2014, BCPL created a driving tour of Underground Railroad sites in
Boone County based on an extensive research project. Products that have
resulted from this innovative project include: interactive web pages; digital
teacher kit; bus tour to local, national and international audiences; and
school field trips. This presentation will demonstrate how this project
effectively promoted local resources to community members and encouraged said members to engage in the community around them.
“Live the full life of the mind, exhilarated by new ideas, intoxicated by the
Romance of the unusual.” - E. Hemingway
Be inspired and intoxicated by new, outside of the box programming ideas.
In a fast paced world, where attention spans are shortening, it is imperative that we adapt and be creative. Reaching out to our communities,
enticing new patrons to participate in programming requires creativity
and innovation. Let’s start a movement, romance the public and travel
into the unknown!
What do I do first?
NOTES
From seed library to sustainability, community building through gardening partnerships is an exciting avenue of civic engagement for the
library. Topics of discussion include planting seeds to grow community
involvement in sustainable gardening and cultivating partnerships to
support seed and gardening programs.
Ever had a program that just didn’t work? Or maybe you had a slam dunk
that just fell apart and you don’t know why. Part presentation and part
therapy session; we’ll focus on how to cope with an event that misses its
audience, and how to avoid that situation in the first place. Participants
will also have a chance to share some of their own trials and tribulations
in library world.
TO THE IVORY TOWER
and a Few Extra Bits
Hiring new staff is one of the most critical steps in providing quality library
service but often it is a guessing game to decide who to hire. The Anderson
Public Library has developed a process of assessing candidates that relies
less on subjective feelings and more on quantifiable, measurable standards
that allow candidates to be scored and ranked. During this session we’ll
provide examples of every step of the process and offer suggestions on
how to customize the process for your own needs.
In the second part of this two-part series, Rachel Folz -- Campbell County
Public Library’s Digital Marketing Manager -- will discuss brand management programs, how to use web analytics, and ideas for posting to
social media.

LEARNING LAB
A group of like-minded librarians have concocted a set of four “maker”
activities that can be completed for continuing education credit. Much
like the “23 Things” programs that spread throughout the library landscape a few years ago, we are asking our human lab rats, er....uh... fellow
librarians, to work to explore new skills in a collaborative environment
in the months before this conference. Today we’ll celebrate our efforts
and share how you, too, can be a maker.
What do I want to do?
What’s standing in my way?
INNOVATIONS
It is often not feasible for libraries to pay for interpretation services
for brief interactions with patrons who do not speak English fluently.
However, with the free technology available today, it is now affordable
to make libraries more welcoming to non-native English speakers. This
session will address federal language accessibility requirements, suggest
data sources to help find your community’s most widely spoken foreign
languages, and discuss technology implemented to serve them.
Only one library in Kentucky offers passport services. After my presentation, attendees will a.) understand why that is, b.) suck it up and embrace
a new way to facilitate learning and global citizenship, c.) wrap their heads
around the notion that libraries must learn to stay afloat by jumping in
the deep end. I’ll share a high-level detail of HCPL’s journey to designation
as a PAF, and how it expanded our customer service horizons, adds value
to our library, and impacts our community.
What do I do first?
NOTES
Young adult fiction is full of many scary things, and so are the lives of teens.
This presentation will cover the most important issues teens face today,
why it is important for teens to have “issues” books, and I will also book
talk a variety of YA books, both fiction and non-fiction, to fit these needs.
TO THE IVORY TOWER
and a Few Extra Bits
Adults with autism are often drawn to the library as a safe place where
they can explore their interests, develop their skills, and interact with
others in their community. We will discuss some of the common joys and
challenges of serving adults on the autism spectrum. With awareness
and training library staff can ensure that autistic adults have positive
experiences in the library and community.
Marketing your library’s programs, collections and services can be complicated. We all know that social media is a great way to market, but what
else is there? Come to this session and hear stories from the field about
some passionate librarians who tried some unorthodox methods to get
the word out -- and find out how you can mirror their marketing success!
Both management and the promoted staff person will face challenges
related to internal promotions. Having been on both sides of this transition, we have some tips and insights-based on our experiences-that will
help you better navigate these type of promotions and hopefully create
a win-win situation rather than a perilous journey fraught with pitfalls.
We will focus our discussion on 4 P’s of promoting from within: Perils,
Problems, Potential, and Possibilities.

INNOVATIONS
One in eight Kentucky high school students meets the criteria for a
substance abuse disorder. Because of this, Boone County Public Library
is currently partnering with the NKY Prevention Alliance to initiate
community-wide efforts in positive youth development and substance
abuse prevention. Public libraries are well poised to establish community
collaboration to increase youth engagement and positive climate change.
Hear how BCPL is working in their community to facilitate these efforts.
Libraries are in a unique position to encourage wellness in their communities. You’ll hear from two libraries who run successful Couch to 5K fitness
programs that might inspire your community to get off the couch too!
What do I do first?
NOTES
Are you overwhelmed by all there is to do? Are all levels of your organization are represented when planning a new service? Do you have great
ideas, but don’t know where to start? Well take a deep breath. This session
translates Project Management into applicable and easy to understand
principals that can be implemented at any level of your organization. You
will learn tools and hear real life examples of how Project Management
can help your Library run more smoothly and get more done.
The Paris-Bourbon County Library received a $20,000 donation from
AT&T to promote literacy in Bourbon County, and we used this money
to distribute over 1,000 copies of Silas Houses’s novel Eli the Good to
students in area schools. Additionally, we had Silas House visit our schools
and speak to students directly about the novel they had just finished reading. Here’s what we learned during this project, and how local students
surprised and inspired us.

Are patrons getting what they need from your website?
The session will help you answer two basic questions about your website:
(a) What do patrons want from your site? and (b) Can they find what they
need? We’ll focus on putting customer service at the heart of your website;
no technical or web design knowledge is necessary. We’ll conclude by
outlining KDLA’s Website Bootcamp project coming up in August 2015.

INNOVATIONS
What’s standing in my way?
Allowing and encouraging staff to combine their passion for the library
with their outside interests can be a very rewarding endeavor. Community
engagement, creative programs and job satisfaction are just some of the
reasons to consider letting staff leave their comfort zone and indulge in
those passions. Come listen to how Katie stepped out from behind the
Circulation Desk and turned a passion for photography into a series of
programs that connected with a diverse, multigenerational group.
What do I do first?
The board gaming community spent 700 million dollars on games, cards,
and merchandise in 2013. In the last five years, it has seen a huge resurgence in popularity among teens and adults in their twenties. This presentation looks at how to incorporate boarding gaming into adult and children’s
programming. It will survey Clark County’s first “ALA International Game
Day”, how to incorporate board games into book clubs, and resources for
buying and starting your own board game programs.
NOTES

Sarah Hubbard (Reference Librarian, Lexington PL) of the Lexington
Public Library will show why seniors are such an important yet overlooked
demographic in public libraries, and what steps can be taken to maximize
program attendance with both individual and ongoing programs. She will
also explain common reasons why libraries fail to attract this demographic,
and what steps can be taken to become more integral to senior populations.

For years, public librarians have helped patrons find books on the Accelerated Reader list to match the reading level required by teachers. As more
studies are published that show that AR does not create lifelong readers,
the time is ripe for the public library to step in and create a collaborative
effort to foster readers. Learn about collaboration between PSPL and
local school districts, homeschoolers and parents that cultivate lifelong
readers and supporters of libraries.

Computer programming job opportunities are growing nationwide. In
order to offer the opportunity for students to gain exposure to this skill
set, BCPL has partnered with several middle schools to offer after-school
coding clubs for students. Through self-directed learning, students are able

skills. Discover how the clubs started, how the clubs are organized, and
experience coding yourself. No experience required!
What’s standing in my way?
Did you know that Kentucky has one of the highest rates of childhood
obesity in the nation at 38.2%. In 2015, Boone County Public Library
received a grant from Interact for Health to implement a community-based
healthy living initiative. BCPL partnered with several local organizations
to offer quarterly active living events and create healthy living kits for
library circulation. Learn what you can do to make healthy living fun and
accessible at your library and in your community.

How is your community’s past being shared at your library? Join our panel
as they discuss the digital projects they’ve created for their patrons. 2014

Reader’s advisory for teens can be very challenging, due to the fact that
teens often simply don’t know what they want to read or what’s available
to them. Add to that the interference of a parent or guardian during a reference interview with a teen and you may never be able to get their hands
on a book that they will really love. In this interactive presentation learn
ways to talk to teens about books and practice hands-on communication
strategies with other attendees.
Is there a world outside of the annual book sale? Can fundraisers actually

County Public Library staff and Friends will talk about some of their new
fundraisers, including the Little Quilt Show & Silent Auction that raised
about $3,000 this past fall. There will also be a time for sharing innovative
