2015 Summer Brochure - Kristina`s Studio of Dance

 Kristina’s
Studio of Dance History
Kristina's Studio of Dance began over 25 years ago
when Diane Pospeshil provided a class for young Kristina and her friends who wanted
to learn how to dance in a non-threatening, friendly environment. That single class grew over the years, and children from all over the
neighborhood came to Diane's in-house dance studio. A love for dance grew in Kristina, and she continued her training through college
where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Dance from Western Michigan University.
In 2000 the Pospeshil's opened Kristina's
Studio of Dance Inc. in Buffalo Grove's Country Court Plaza. In 2009 KSD moved to a bigger facility within the same plaza and now houses 3
dance studios.
Mission Statement
Kristina’s Studio of Dance is here to offer people of all ages a well-rounded education in dance, in the same non-threatening, friendly
environment as Diane’s basement studio. We strive to give our students the opportunity to succeed in many dance settings such as benefit
concerts, conventions, competitions, High School orchesis & poms, college curriculums, and the professional dance world.
Involvement in the Kristina’s Studio of Dance program will teach students valuable life skills as well. By participating in our dance classes,
students will learn time management, discipline, healthy living, and how to work as a team with their fellow dancers. At our studio, young
students and adults alike have fun by exploring the art of dance. Our classes are held in controlled environments led by qualified
instructors, where students are able to improve their dance technique, build confidence and self-esteem, and develop performance skills
under our guidance.
KSD is home to the
Heart of Dance Ensemble
, our youth dance company. The HDE gives dancers many opportunities to perform for
greater causes throughout the community. KSD will continue to promote versatile dance training. provide
diverse performance
experiences, and an educated staff who love teaching students of all ages.
All are invited to our studio to share our love for dance!

KSD Teaching Philosophy:
The shared goals of the KSD staff are to teach our students strong, healthy dance technique; help each student progress by giving
individual attention; build their confidence and self-esteem to perform on stage; and prepare them for many dance settings by
presenting different styles of dance. Each teacher at Kristina’s Studio of Dance creates their own syllabus from the education and
training they have received.
Our classes progress like a school system from September to June. On the second week of June we have a Recital for our students to
present to their families and friends the result of a year’s hard work, dedication, and progress. Our Summer Technique Session and
Camps are for students to continue their dance education, learn different techniques, improve their skills, and have fun!
Dance Class Curriculum:
Every dance class will begin with a warm-up. Warm-ups are imperative because they include movements that strengthen, stretch, and
loosen the muscles of the body needed for each style of dance. These warm-ups are necessary to improve technique and prevent injuries
when learning more difficult steps and skills. Each class will also include learning progressions traveling across the floor and
combinations in the center, which teach students to link together different steps and movements at various tempi. In each class,
students will gain flexibility, coordination, musicality, and memorization skills. There will be times in class when students will take
turns, watch their classmates dance, and receive individual attention from the teacher. During these times, students are expected to
learn by watching their classmates and listening to the comments of the teacher.
Students do not need to be moving the entire class
time to make progress, but they must be paying attention during the entire class time to make progress.
Dress Code & Hair:
PLEASE NOTE: In the best interest of our students, and in an effort to improve quality of training, they will be given one
warning if they are not dressed in proper dance attire. The second time they are not dressed appropriately for class they will
be asked to watch instead of dance. NO LARGE JEWELRY PIECES should be worn to any class.
Tap/Jazz/Hip-Hop/Contemporary - Leotards or snug-fitting tanks/tees, worn with dance pants/capris/tights. Close-fitting
sweatshirts may be worn for the warm-up portion of class ONLY. Hair must be pulled back neatly and securely; it should not
fall into the dancer’s face, and the dancer should not have to fix it multiple times during class.
Ballet/Pre-Pointe/Pointe - Leotards and tights. A ballet skirt or cotton dance shorts may also be worn. No T-shirts or tank
tops may be worn over leotards; only ballet warm-ups will be accepted for the warm-up portion of class. Hair must be
securely pulled back, off the neck, and away from the face.

CLASSES DESCRIPTIONS:
Creative Movement (Ages 2-3) - These classes have been developed to celebrate a child’s natural love of music & movement. Each class
is based around imaginative dance-based movement that promotes the development of gross motor skills through the use of rhythmic
upbeat music & fun props.
Parents/guardians are welcome to join their dancer in class if they are nervous at first
. These classes are
appropriate for both girls & boys.
Basic Movement (Ages 3-6) - Students will learn basic Ballet & Jazz technique, including positions of the feet; carriage of the arms;
various jumps; and movement patterns such as pas de bourres and jazz squares. Our basic movement teachers will have students
practice locomotion skills; stretching; singing to music while dancing; dancing with props; and will incorporate imagination, counting
and shapes. Through the warm-up and center work, students will gain flexibility, coordination, and memorization skills. This class will
also include creative games, flashcards, and dance combinations to fun children’s music.
Basic Tap (Ages 3-6) - Using the same concepts as Basic Movement, students will learn and practice beginner tap steps and skills. They
will receive individual attention from the teacher, and will learn fun tap combinations to children’s music.
Ages 6 and up (1st grade and up, Kids/Jr/Sr levles)
Tap - Tap dancing is a percussive form of dance that originated from combining African rhythms with Irish dance steps. Students will
learn and practice beginning, intermediate, or advanced tap steps and skills, including rhythm, timing, and clarity of sound. They will
receive individual attention from the teacher and learn various styles of tap combinations.
Jazz
- Jazz dancing can be seen on Broadway, in the Movies, or on the Concert Dance stage. Each class will include stretching,
strengthening, musicality, basic ballet, and different styles like funk, lyrical, and classic jazz. Classic Jazz is a blend of traditional dance
elements that “swing” and movements that come from the vernacular of the current times.
Ballet - Ballet is a classical, European form of dance. The disciplined and structured form helps all students become stronger, more
advanced dancers. Contemporary and classical styles of ballet will be presented, using French terminology, focusing on technique and
performance quality equally. Ballet technique includes learning positions of the feet, turn-out from the hip socket, carriage of the arms,
various jumps, and movement qualities such as adagio and allegro. Through the barre warm-up and center work, students will gain
flexibility, coordination, and memorization skills.
Pre-Pointe/Pointe (AGES 11 & UP) - This class is designed to work on foot, ankle, leg, and abdominal strength for serious ballet
students who wish to try dancing on Pointe. They will work on proper alignment of the body and proper usage of the muscles to elevate
their technique and prepare them for Pointe. After the teacher has agreed that they are strong enough, a student may be fitted for pointe
shoes (but not before they are 12 YEARS OLD). The students’ feet must be done growing before beginning pointe work, to prevent injury
or damage to their feet. Students must enroll in the Ballet class before Pre Pointe/Pointe.
Contemporary – This genre fuses elements from multiple dance styles. Contemporary pulls from traditional Jazz dance, Modern dance
techniques, and classical Ballet. It embodies lyrical qualities of movement, simultaneously subtle and dynamic, conveying musicality and
emotion through movement. Instead of the classical ballet stance of an upright body, modern/contemporary dancers deliberately fall to
the floor and make strong, graceful recoveries; they also take traditional steps and add a tilt, lean, or flat-back of the upper body. Like
traditional Modern dance, it favors movement deriving from the expression of inner feeling.
Hip-Hop (AGES 6 & UP) - Hip-Hop is a form of dance that is still evolving today. It blends different street dance styles such as
popping-locking, breaking, footwork, flex & waving, etc. Backed by popular music (Hip-Hop, Pop, Dance, Electronic, Funk, R&B), it has
many characteristics of African traditional dance and early vernacular jazz dance.
Stretch & Tone - This class will focus on stretching and strengthening the muscles needed to perform advanced dance skills. Upon
completion of this class students will have a clear understanding of how to stretch themselves in order to contribute to the progress of
their dance training; the exercises given will also help them prevent dance/sport related injuries.
Turns & Leaps - Students will be given the chance to practice the proper technique needed to perform basic or complex turns and
jumps. They will work on strengthening exercises and dance combinations designed to improve execution of these skills. THE HEART OF DANCE ENSEMBLE
:
This ensemble is our youth performance group. Members are given opportunities to perform throughout the community, compete at
dance competitions and dance for greater causes. HDE is a vehicle to improve our students’ dance technique, enhance their performance
skills, and learn the benefits of being dedicated to a team. At Kristina’s, we foster an environment which allows the dancers to gain
confidence by improving each performance, learning self-discipline, respect for themselves, other dancers, and the art of dance. We hold
HDE placement auditions in June for the following season; we also have an informational handbook for all who are interested.
