CHANGING LIVES. BUILDING COMMUNITY. TOGETHER. PROGRAM & SCHOLARSHIP CAMPAIGN Be a Hero We are thrilled to announce The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s 7th Annual HEROES Program and Scholarship Campaign, an effort that will bring a community of dedicated volunteers together to meet the goal of raising $95,000 to help more than 2,000 neighbors in need. In the coming year the Kroc Center will offer scholarships to allow children, families and seniors to participate in programs that encourage them to discover their talents, and promote creativity, wellness, spiritual discovery and community engagement. Joan Kroc’s vision was to provide worldclass programs to children, adults and seniors in our service area, regardless of their financial circumstance. In order to continue changing lives we need the support of the community members like you! Mrs. Kroc’s generous endowment pays for 40% of the Kroc Center’s $9 million annual budget. Her vision was that the community would help generate the remaining $5 million needed to balance the budget each year through program service fees, membership dues, and donations to campaigns like this. Join our efforts to change lives & build a stronger community Program & Scholarship Campaign THE CAUSE The program and scholarship fund allows children, families and seniors to participate in life-changing programs at The Salvation Army Kroc Center regardless of ability to pay. For many recipients, scholarships make a crucial difference in their lives by providing basic needs including: childcare during the summer so single parents can work, exercise and wellness to the ill and injured, support and social engagement for the elderly and emergency food to the poor. Mrs. Kroc Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, recognized this as a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place, a place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children’s social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. She described the Kroc Center as being a beacon of light and hope in the community. MAKING A DIFFERENCE The Salvation Army Kroc Center scholarship fund has truly made a difference for single parent Eugene Clark and his eight-year-old son, Marques. Without family in San Diego to assist in caring for Marques, Eugene searched for a program for Marques to attend while he was out of school; somewhere that would cultivate his son’s interests and expose him to a variety After months of research and asking around, Eugene learned about the Kroc Center. ,” he said. “We would not have been able to survive this past summer without the Kroc Center,” Eugene said. “Just being able “Honestly, this place is fantastic and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.” of activities. He believes the community would definitely diminish in so many ways if the Kroc Center did not offer scholarships because it gives the kids, whose families might not otherwise be able to afford life-changing opportunities, an alternative to the streets. “The streets are not a place where the kids should be being raised. It’s terrible out there,” Eugene said. “Kids need some place to come to where they are comfortable, where they can grow, where there is a great amount of resources to keep them guided to whatever they choose to do in their lives.” “I’ve never seen a facility run this wonderfully that is set up for the children.” CHANGING LIVES Thanks to the community’s generous support of the 2014 Heroes Program and Scholarship Campaign, The Salvation Army Kroc Center has provided: 646 weeks of Scholarships for Spring, Summer and Winter Day Camp Scholarships for swim and backyard pool safety lessons to more than 325 local children Scholarships for 294 memberships 2,000 emergency food boxes to the hungry 1,500 people in our community Scholarships to more than $125,000 in subsidized programs and services for children, adults and seniors Life-long memories to 186 children who attended Day Camp on scholarship this Summer, Reaching our goal of raising $95,000 ensures unlimited possibilities for youth in our community at The Salvation Army Kroc Center. many of them for more than one week! Making a National Impact Mrs. Kroc entrusted The Salvation Army with $87 million to build the first Kroc Center in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego. Sadly, she passed away a little more than a year after it opened. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.6 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 27 in different stages of development. www.KROCCENTER.org
