Dear All
15th May 2015
DIARY DATES
At this time of year, we normally prepare the school timetable based on the
curriculum requirements for the following year. We are pleased to say that we are
able to offer almost all students their option choices for Year 10 in September and
where we cannot accommodate individual choices, parents and students have
already been contacted with a view to making an alternative choice.
E-safety is an increasingly important issue of concern in society as a result of the
ease with which young people can access social media. We must be particularly
vigilant in helping young people to be safe by observing very straightforward rules
concerning e-safety. In a previous newsletter, I wrote about the pressures that
young people are under to use social media such as ‘Facebook’ and often students
record comments on ‘Facebook’ or produce video clips which may seem harmless at
the time, but without regard to the consequences of their actions. We ask parents
to support us in conveying the important message about the misuse of social media
and be vigilant with their children at home ensuring that nobody under the age of 14
has a ‘Facebook’ account or is using inappropriate websites. We have also revised
our policy for staff and governor use of networking and internet to reinforce the
importance of student safety and security of data.
At this time of year, we normally recruit new teachers to join Kenilworth for the
following academic year. Our teachers are very well qualified and committed to
ensuring that every student achieves the best they can. Through our recruitment
processes, we ensure that new staff are fully committed to nurturing the whole
student, are willing to contribute to all aspects of school life and always show care
and concern for our students’ wellbeing. As previously, our new teachers will
introduce themselves to you in forthcoming newsletters from September.
As we are currently preparing for Activity Day at the end of term, I would like to
emphasise the importance of safety for all of our students, particularly when they
are off site. I hope that everyone is clear about who they should speak to if there is
anything that is of serious concern to them regarding their personal safety and wellbeing or matters of a confidential nature, whether it be in school, or out in the
community. If any pupil becomes aware of someone who is at risk of physical, sexual
or verbal abuse, the correct procedures to be followed are in our planners and are in
posters in school.
Our nominated Child Protection Officers, Mrs Jewitt, Mr Bennett and Mr Snape at
Leyes Lane and Mr Mummery at the Sixth Form are appropriately trained to deal
with such matters and will liaise with the appropriate agencies if it is considered
necessary, handling all matters in a sensitive and discreet manner. If any student is
concerned about the behaviour of another person in school or an adult on their way
to school, they must report it to someone in school. We are always happy to
welcome parents and volunteers to come and help with school activities and this
applies to Activity Day or any other events. However, where supervision of pupils is
concerned, we only allow adults to work with pupils individually or in groups if they
have the appropriate DBS clearance.
Yours sincerely
H.H.S. Abbott

Nepal hit by a further devastating earthquake.
Following on from the last article about Nepal being hit by a huge earthquake, in the last few days it has
been struck by a further 7.3 magnitude earthquake. To put this into perspective this is a similar magnitude
earthquake that devastated Puerto Prince in Haiti in 2010.
Although it would seem that the death toll is much less than in the
previous earthquake it has destroyed many of the buildings that were
still standing.
I managed to communicate with a friend in Kathmandu last night who
has chosen to stay in the country to help out in one of the hospitals.
She said that where she is people are simply desperate. There is very
little shelter which is causing further problems by people succumbing to
exposure during the cold nights as well as a lack of clean water,
medicine and food.
Many students have been coming up to me telling me about their fundraising ideas and it has been fantastic
to see the children selling cakes, and cartoons that they have drawn as well as car washing and sponsored
events.
Please encourage your children to take part in this fundraising event; as I said the them in assemblies last
week, each and every one of them can make a difference to someone’s life by helping to raise even a small
amount.
Could I ask parents to forward the ‘justgiving’ URL and / or the text messaging donation to your friends and
colleagues at work or through your own social media.
Many thanks for your continued support.

OLIVER SELECTED FOR ICE HOCKEY TRIALS FOR ENGLAND
Oliver played for England U15s in the Torino Mountain Cup
Challenge, Turin, Italy. The tournament hosted teams from Italy,
France, Switzerland & USA, with England having their most
successful result for over 9 years by taking the Gold Medal.
The following weekend Oliver was back representing the Midlands
U15s in the National Inter-Conference Tournament 2015 at
Sheffield which brings together Conference Teams from the
Midlands, South-East, South-West, North and Scotland. The
Midlands had a very strong weekend, coming out as eventual
runners up to the South-West and as a result Oliver has been
invited to attend trials for next season's England U16s team
which will take place at the end of August.
Good Luck with the trials Oliver!

Book Reviews from
the Learning Resource Centre
A Series of Unfortunate Events
These books are for people that like being left on the edge of their seat. There are 13
books in the series and they are all about the life for the 3 Baudelaire orphans:
Violet (is 14), Klaus (is 13) and Sunny (is a baby). The story is about their terrible lives
as orphans after a terrible tragedy that killed their parents. Around every corner lies
something they wished never to see again. They are haunted by the same problem
again and again. Will they ever find their happy ending?

The Evil Star
I read "Evil Star" by Anthony Horowitz; it is the second book in his horror series and
I really enjoyed it. It was full of suspense and gripped me from the start to the end.
It had loads of action and the characters were great.
I would highly recommend the series - begin with the first book; "Ravens Gate"
By James Knight 8C
The Fastest Boy in the World
The fastest boy in the world is a really good book, my favourite shortlisted Carnegie
Medal book so far! When reading it, the book brought out lots of emotions in me,
and it made me realise how lucky I am.
I would definitely recommend this book, it is amazing!!!
