Leyes Lane, Kenilworth, CV8 2DA Tel: (01926)859421 • Email: [email protected] Head: Mr H. Abbott, B.A.(Hons.), M.Ed • Deputy Head: Mr. M. Snape Dear All 1st May 2015 DIARY DATES Congratulations are due to the Year 8 Football Team who won the finals of the Warwickshire Schools’ Football Tournament earlier this week. After a year of trials and matches prior to the finals, they deserve this success, as they have worked hard, played well and had exceptional coaching. I reported in a previous newsletter that the system of rewards is currently being reviewed. We have introduced an online shop, which is being piloted with Year 11 students before they leave. Whilst the system of house points is working well within the lower school, we have found out from consultations with our older students that there is a need to improve the value of rewards for older students. Our students in KS4 will also be able to make use of the opportunities to exchange house points for appropriate items in the shop and the system will be further modified in September to include relevant recognition for Sixth Form students. Students are currently rehearsing for the summer production of ‘Grease’ and a Spring Music Concert, which will be taking place next week. Both events promise to be enjoyable and we are looking forward to seeing our talented students perform. Tickets for the music concert can be purchased on the night and I hope that many parents and visitors will be able to attend. We are grateful also to the PTA for their contributions and for the support that they will be lending to both of these school events. Our students will be taking part in another fund raising campaign through ‘Shelterbox’ to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake in Nepal. There will be a donation box at the door of the music concert should anyone wish to contribute (please see the article in this edition for further details of our Shelterbox appeal). I would like to take this opportunity to remind students about the policy on the use of mobile phones in school. Mobile phones, if they are brought into school, should be kept switched off and out of view. They are not to be used for recreational purposes during the school day and if pupils are seen using phones during the school day, they will be confiscated. If any student needs to make contact with home during the school day, they should mention it to their head of year or report to reception and they will be given permission to use a phone if it is for an emergency. Mobile phones of course are strictly forbidden in examinations and the use of a mobile phone could disqualify a candidate from a public examination. The majority of our students adhere to the policy but it is worth reminding everybody at this stage of our expectations. A number of students and staff will be taking part in the May Day Fun Run on Monday. I hope that it will be an enjoyable and successful event, bringing the community together. Yours sincerely H.H.S Abbott Headteacher May 4th 5th 7th May Day Bank Holiday Spring Concert 7.30pm Upper Hall Year 8 Parents Evening Spring Music Concert Power, Love, Celebration Tuesday 5th May 7.30pm Upper Hall Tickets £3 on the door Mr Pugh ran the London Marathon Congratulations to our Music teacher Dave Pugh who ran the London Marathon in 4 hr 13 mins 58 secs An excellent achievement! Year 13 back in the Cold Environments Following our successful trip to Iceland the Year 13 geographers were back in the field on Sunday to study another aspect of cold environments. This time they were looking at the relic glacial landscape and tracing the route of the glaciers through Snowdonia. The photograph shows them enjoying the views at Cwm Idwal. Lucy Cuts her hair to help Little Princess Charity I am Lucy Woodward from 9J, below are before and after photos of my hair cut for Little Princess Trust. Book Reviews from the Learning Resource Centre 29th April 2015 Apple and Rain Apple and Rain is a great story with lots of twists and turns. The book focuses on a family which expresses some of the dramas people experience. I think this is a good book and I would recommend people should read it! By Beth Connolly 7J I Am Number Four I am Number Four is an overall really fast-paced action book. It has some really interesting characters that you become really attached to by the end of he book. John's perspective is very funny but also very informative. The first chapter really draws you in and it has a very satisfying ending that makes you want to pick up the rest of the series. The middle was a little slow for my liking but it did pick up a bit as the story progressed. I found some of the characters at John's school a little irritating but I really loved Sarah and Henri. Overall, this book is a solid 4 stars. By Gaby Shedwick 8D The Hunger Games I really enjoyed this book by Suzanne Collins even though I don't really read these types of adventurous books. Suzanne Collins really did a good job of this book and I recommend it to anyone even if they don't read very ambitious and adventurous books. I think that the first Hunger Games book is better than the others in the series as the main part of the story is the actual start! Iqra Asif 8K ALUMINI We are launching a new Alumni Association and are hoping that former students of Abbey High School, Castle High School, Kenilworth Grammar School, Priory & Abbey and Kenilworth School will sign up. The purpose of this is to improve the contact we have with our senior students, particularly once they have left school and to help us keep in touch with leavers and former students. LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVE Ex Kenilworth School Student AB (Sea) Nathan Holtom came in to talk to Year 10 students about careers in the Royal Navy. He gave a fascinating insight into his own career path, including his time on HMS Ark Royal shortly before it was decommissioned, and talking about his various deployments including one to the Middle East and working with the off-shore fisheries protection squadron. He also gave students information on the application process, and the four-day pre-induction course. Kenilworth School to raise funds to help the Nepalese affected by the recent earthquake In 2013 students and staff of Kenilworth school raised over £7000 to provide 12 Shelter Boxes to the people affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. These Shelter boxes made a huge difference to a small number of families and allowed them some comfort and a means of moving on. As you are aware the country of Nepal has been devastated by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake which has destroyed homes and infrastructure throughout the country. Millions of people are now in a situation where their homes have been destroyed or so badly damaged they cannot inhabit them. As you can see from the image the Shelter Box contains not only a shelter (tent) for 10 people) but also blankets, cooking equipment, water purifying systems as well as small back packs filled with materials to entertain the children whose schools may be destroyed. As with the Typhoon Haiyan appeal, each student in Years 7 – 10 will be given £1 next week for them to invest and grow! One enterprising student last time bought a block of chocolate and sold each square separately – he continued to do this and raised over £60! Any money raised should be brought back into school in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and form group clearly labeled by w/c Monday 18th May. If you would like to donate any money directly to Shelterbox please access our Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/kenilworthschool/ Or you can text a donation by following these instructions: Where you add the amount you can alter it to whatever you want to donate. Many thanks for your continued support R. Garratt Patrick Ward 7M has been selected along with Emily Year 7, Rachel McDonnell and Brook Ellershaw to appear in the forthcoming production of Oliver one of the best loved musicals at the Belgrade Theatre. Patrick is playing the the Artful Dodger and at present is rehearsing for eight and a half hours each week. Patrick recently auditioned for the Pan film at Wembley Arena and got through to the last five. A fantastic achievement Patrick! We wish all our students well we understand there are still a few tickets left if you wish to purchase tickets contact 02476 553055 Year 8 South Warwickshire Football Knockout Champions Congratulations to the Year 8 football team for winning the U13 Mid and South Warwickshire knockout final 4 - 3 against North Leamington School. The team performed magnificently in a dramatic match which was won in the dying seconds. It was a close encounter which Kenilworth started brightly and Niall Etherson opened the scoring with a neat volley after Luca Bloodworth's cross had been flicked on by Adam Smith. Leamington then started to dominate and eventually breached the Kenilworth defence despite some excellent defending from Blandford, Barton, Bates, Captain Zach Evans and heroics from Rhys Scale in goal. Kenilworth went into half time 2 - 1 down but started the second half well with the midfield trio of Hackett, Lord and the impressive Isaac Bloomer linking well to create chances for Kenilworth. Etherson soon scored his second goal and the game looked to be heading into extra time until Leamington scored their third goal leading 3 - 2 with only 5 minutes remaining. However, buoyed on by some excellent support from the touchlines Kenilworth continued to drive forward in search of the equaliser and some fine skill from Ben Cook enabled Etherson to grab his hatrick and save the game. But Kenilworth were not in the mood to settle for a draw and as the referee placed his whistle to his mouth Isaac Bloomer surged forward to instigate a final Kenilworth attack. His through ball set up supersubs Harry Green and Ben Harris who combined well to force some desperate Leamington defending only for the ball to fall kindly to Man of the Match Niall Etherson who smashed his fourth goal of the match and sealed victory for Kenilworth. Well done to all the students who contributed handsomely to our progression through to the final.
