College Admission Counseling
Dear Colleagues,
This year, for the first time, Kentucky and Ohio join forces to offer a combined conference
that builds bridges, merges energies, and shares expertise. As a result, this year’s
conference promises more session variety, more networking opportunities, more exhibitors,
more fun, and certainly more sharks and penguins than we’ve ever had before!
We invite you to join us and hundreds of colleagues for what is sure to be a SUPER
conference—bigger and better than either of our states has offered before! The 2015
Super Conference will take place June 10 - 12 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center,
located on the banks of the Ohio River, just across the bridge from downtown Cincinnati.
Hotel accommodations will be available at the Embassy Suites Cincinnati-RiverCenter in
Covington, KY—adjacent to the convention center.
The three-day event promises varied opportunities to cross paths with old friends and to
build bridges with new colleagues. Guest speakers include NACAC immediate Past President
Katy Murphy and University of Cincinnati President Santa J. Ono, PhD. Arrive early for
the Guiding the Way to Inclusion one-day workshop for secondary and postsecondary
counselors. Or participate in one of several other pre-conference activities over, around,
or beneath the bridges of the Ohio River. Options include a Cincinnati Reds baseball
game, Cincy brew tours, Duck rides on the river, and college campus visits in the Greater
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area.
During the conference, each state will hold its own business meetings and award
celebrations, but we’ll learn together, socialize together (the conference social will be held
at the Newport Aquarium!), and make history together.
Please mark your calendars, make your reservations, and come build bridges!
Sincerely,
Tye Mortensen

SAMPLING OF SUPER CONFERENCE SESSIONS
There will be close to 30 conference sessions available. Below is just a sample of what is being
offered at this year’s Super Conference.
GENERATION IY:
WHO ARE WE COUNSELING?
Generation iY/Z/Homeland Generation/
Screenagers/Bubble-Wrap Generation —
No matter what we call them, we need to
know what defines this generation of digital
integrators. Born between 1995-2009, they
are a generation of paradoxes; isolated
but connected, diverse but homogeneous,
narcissistic but passionate about social causes
This presentation is suited for secondary school
counselors who will benefit from learning about
who they are counseling as well as seasoned
college admissions professionals who work with
Generation iY.
HARVARD, NORTHWESTERN,
OR BUST: HOW TO ADVISE
THE HIGH ACHIEVING APPLICANT
Grades, test scores, and impressive activities
alone won't get a student admitted to schools
that reject almost all of their applicants. So
who gets admitted? This session offers straight
talk and discussion with a former Ivy League
admissions officer on how counselors can help
Midwestern students improve their chances.
NI DE AQUI, NI DE ALLA; NEITHER
FROM HERE NOR FROM THERE
This session is in continuum of last year’s
sessions at OACAC and this new session will
provide current and updated information about
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
issues that students are currently facing. Also,
we will discuss changes in current U.S Federal
and Ohio/Kentucky policies that have opened
gates for undocumented students to continue
their education at a post-secondary education
institution.

PROMOTING COLLEGE ACCESS THROUGH
A PARENT ACADEMY (GRADES 1-12)
Leadership Scholars is a research-based
organization that serves families with a
dream for and commitment to their children
going to college. The organization runs a
Parent Academy, where they partner with
elementary, middle, and high schools in the
Cincinnati Public School area to invite every
parent at the school to attend an 8-week
parent academy focused on supporting their
students' academic achievement and college
attendance. Leadership Scholars ensures that
children, through the Parent Academy, will have
a parent (or one caring adult) who understands
the college process. To strengthen the college
curriculum, social and emotional topics such as
meditation, grit, neuroplasticity, and optimism
have been included. This past fall the parent
academy served 310 graduates, and to-date
they have served over 20 schools. In this session
you will learn how to bring effective parent
programs to your school/district.
ONWARD AND UPWARD:
CAREER PATHS FOR PROFESSIONAL
PROGRESSION IN OUR FIELD
Over the last 20 years, college and university
admission and enrollment management
has become more all-encompassing and
demanding with professionals having the
potential to shape the future of higher
education. Although our field has grown
over the last 20 years, how to advance in our
profession remains somewhat ill-defined and
confusing especially for young professionals
who were uncertain about how to enter the
field in the first place (NACAC, 2014). Join a
diverse panel of education professionals in this
highly interactive session as they discuss their
career trajectories and provide tips for moving
on and up in our field.
COUNSELING, READINESS, RECRUITMENT:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE
REDESIGNED PSAT/NMSQT AND HOW IT
RELATES TO THE SAT
The redesigned PSAT/NMSQT®, launching
this October, will be focused on the few things
that evidence shows matter most for success
in college. Come hear how this valuable tool
is changing and what these changes mean
for your institution. From preparing for and
administering the assessment, to how the
redesign will impact Search orders, this session
will provide valuable information to get you
ready for the fall. Attendees will also have an
opportunity to hear from peers and discuss
best practices for getting the most out of the
redesigned assessment.
WHY THE SMARTEST PROSPECTS KNOW
NOTHING ABOUT YOUR INSTITUTION
Today's savviest prospective students are
the stealth applicants: those who prefer to
conduct research on colleges and universities
on their own. Their applications arrive out of
the blue, providing you with a pool of highly
qualified candidates with one major problem:
They ignore the information that you send to
them. You end up with a plethora of best-fit
students that you can't convert because they're
clueless about your institution's true strengths
and distinctions. This session is designed for
those who are looking for solutions to two
major questions plaguing admission offices:
1. How to identify Stealth Applicants, and 2.
How to design communications that grab their
attention and motivate them to act.
COMMUNICATING THEIR STORIES:
HELPING UNDERREPRESENTED HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS WRITE COMPELLING
COLLEGE ADMISSIONS ESSAYS
College admission essays are designed to
provide a platform for students to communicate
their unique voices and stories and to help
admissions officers understand the context
surrounding an applicant’s life journey.
Underrepresented students often face adversity
and overcome obstacles on a daily basis;
however, many underrepresented students are
unable to convey their adversity in a succinct
and persuasive manner in a college admission
essay. Come learn from current college access
professionals, who previously worked in
undergraduate admissions, on how to equip
your students to intentionally and persuasively
highlight their unique voices and stories in their
college admission essays.
GEAR UP IN KENTUCKY AND OHIO - IMPACT
ON STUDENTS AND COLLEGE ADMISSIONS
GEAR UP is a large, well-funded federal program
designed to increase educational attainment
in communities and schools where collegegoing cultures are in need of cultivation.
Both Kentucky and Ohio are proud GEAR UP
Grantees and are eager report on progress.
Within our presentation, we will: 1. Share GEAR
UP accomplishments and goals (with relevant
data); 2. Conduct Small-Table discussions on
reach and potential partnering between highereducation and GEAR UP sites in both states and
3. Develop actionable ideas to further the
educational attainment of GEAR UP students in
Kentucky and Ohio.
INSIDE EDITION: CASE STUDIES
IN SELECTIVE ADMISSION
College admission officers from selective
private and public colleges/universities will
provide insights into the admission decision
process. Mock case studies of applicants will be
reviewed and attendees will observe how and
why students are accepted, denied, deferred or
waitlisted.
NAVIGATING THE COLLEGE SEARCH
FROM THE HS STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
This session sponsored by the OACAC Inclusion,
Access and Success Committee will give
conference participants a unique opportunity
to hear about the college search process
directly from recent high school seniors. The
student panelists will discuss the highlights and
challenges that they encountered throughout
the process, and provide feedback on their
experiences with their high school counselors
and college admissions offices. Come prepared
to learn and ask questions!
7
THE COLLEGE TRANSITION PROCESS
FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE COLLEGE
EXPERIENCE BEFORE THEY GET TO CAMPUS
Each year we see more incoming college
students who have experienced college classes
while in high school. Although these students
are coming to campus with more academic
experience, they are still very much a first-time
college student. This presentation will cover
best practices to help these students transition
and ways to build strong relations with high
schools that foster these students.
NCAA ELIGIBILITY CENTER:
OVERVIEW AND UPDATES
During this session, a member of the NCAA
staff will provide an overview of NCAA initialeligibility requirements, the core-course review
process, and requirements for online and
blended learning coursework. Special attention
will be given to important changes in Division I
initial-eligibility requirements coming in 2016.
COLLEGE COUNSELING 201: LESSONS
LEARNED BY A PRACTITIONER TURNED
PARENT OF COLLEGE-AGED STUDENTS
What do admission officers “really” think? How
does financial aid “really” award scholarships?
This session will provide an insider view of the
college search process, admission selection,
and financial aid through the observations and
opinions of a 30-year admission veteran who
currently has college-aged children. Topics
explored are intended to be helpful to college
counselors as they advise students in the
college search process.
FORGET MILLENNIALS. ARE YOU
READY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION?
Millennials and their pesky overbearing parents
are finally cycling out. But they changed higher
education in many ways. Now a new emerging
generation is entering high school and it’s
going to change again. Born post 9/11 and
raised connected, they and their “stealth" GenX
parents will soon be your audience and visiting
your campus. Are you ready?
HOW TO GET TO THE LIST
Helping students in groups or individually get
to their initial and final college lists involves
both art and science. Learn tools and strategies
to work with students from the junior year
through the senior year to get to that list of
colleges that “fit” them.
BRIDGING THE COLLEGE
ACCESS GAP WITH KHEAA OUTREACH
A lot can happen in the course of a school
year, and it’s hard to know where to start
with college access programming. Let KHEAA
Outreach staff help you understand the
timeline of college access activities that can
take place in the life cycle of an academic
year. You’ll get ideas for how to best organize
and schedule college access programs for all
grade levels, with a special focus on senior
year, including discussions about Close the
Deal, College Application Month, FAFSA
completion and FAFSA follow-up activities.
Don’t go it alone through another school year!
KHEAA can help bridge the gap in your college
access programming. Many KHEAA outreach
counselors will also be on hand to brainstorm
and schedule activities for the 2015-2016
school year.
Plan now for the
College Board’s
redesigned
assessments.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
Focus on Cincinnati Youth Collaborative www.cycyouth.org
Cincinnati Youth Collaborative (CYC)
makes a significant difference in the
lives of vulnerable young people in 1st
grade through college by providing a
range of services designed to keep kids
in school, prepared for college and
career, and on the pathway to success.
Bringing together over 1,300
volunteers and 59 local businesses,
CYC strives for dropout prevention
by offering mentoring and tutoring,
college readiness and success, and
career preparation. CYC is a partner
with Cincinnati Public and several
other public school districts in the
greater Cincinnati area and is the only
local organization to offer a full range
of youth development services both
within and outside of schools.
As this year’s KYACAC/OACAC
community service organization,
CYC welcomes both monetary and
school supply donations. Please see
the suggested list for school supplies
below:
