It’s that time of year again….sunscreen time! Practicing
sun safety during childhood plays an important role in the
prevention of skin cancer. One severe sunburn can damage a child’s skin and double the risk of developing skin
cancer later in life. The staff at Ladybug would like to work
with you in providing the best possible sun protection for
your “bug”. To keep all our “bugs” safe, please make sure
your child has:

Sunscreen applied before arrival each day.

A new bottle of sunscreen so we can apply it after naptime.

A completed medication authorization form so we have permission to apply the
sunscreen.

A wide brimmed hat and sunglasses labeled with their name.

Benefits of Baby Sign Language
Baby Sign Language has three categories of benefits:
1.Practical: less fussing and more fun, Fewer Tantrums and More Fun
When babies can’t communicate constructively they get frustrated, leading to tantrums and meltdowns. We have all experienced the feeling of helplessness, trying to bring comfort to an inconsolable baby, guessing at what they want.
Baby Sign Language lets your baby communicate what they want. They can tell you if they want their teddy bear, when they are hungry, if it is too
hot, or if their tummy is hurt. Families that sign report that both parents and child experience less frustration.
Spending hours trying to guess why your baby is distraught is an unenjoyable way to lose a night of sleep. With Baby Sign Language, both you and
your baby address the root cause of these tantrums and spend more time enjoying each other’s company.
2.Emotional: creates a closer parental bond, Enjoy a Closer Bond
When you and your baby are able to communicate, it forges a closer bond. When you and your baby can understand each other it increases the

Happy June!
During the month of June, each of our little ladybugs will explore different sensory items such as water play,
sensory bags and digging those toes into some grass. The kids love art and we have plenty of butterfly, bug
and summer art for the children.
Sunscreen
We have lots going on in the classroom! I
am so excited that we can get outside in
the morning and the afternoon. We are
fortunate to have a playground that is
quite shaded from the sun and wind, making it enjoyable for all of our babies. The
kids clothing and feet do get dirty when
we go outside, so an extra set of outside
clothes and socks/shoes are not a bad
idea! We would be happy to change them
into their “outdoor” clothes before going
out to play. I want to thank you for applying sunscreen to your child
in the morning before they
come. The infant staff will
re-apply it in the afternoon
before we go outside.

How to Pick Sunscreen:
Use a sunscreen that says “broad-spectrum” on the label - that means it will screen out
both UVB and UVA rays.
Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. The higher the SPF,
the more UVB protection the sunscreen has.
Look for the new UVA “star” rating system on the label.
One star is low UVA protection.
Two stars is medium protection.
Three stars is high protection.
Four stars is the highest UVA protection available in an over-the-counter sunscreen
product.
For sensitive areas of the body, such as the nose, cheeks, tops of the ears, and the shoulders, choose a sunscreen or sunblock with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. While these
products usually stay visible on the skin even after you rub them in, some now come in fun
colors that kids enjoy.
Sunscreen for Babies:
For babies younger than 6 months: Use sunscreen on small areas of the body, such
as the face, if protective clothing and shade are not available.
For babies older than 6 months: Apply to all areas of the body, but be careful around the
eyes. If your baby rubs sunscreen into her eyes, wipe the eyes and hands clean with a
damp cloth. If the sunscreen irritates her skin, try a different brand or try a sunscreen stick
or sunscreen or sunblock with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. If a rash develops, talk with
your child’s doctor.
How to Apply Sunscreen:
Use enough sunscreen to cover all exposed areas, especially the face, nose, ears, feet,
and hands and even the backs of the knees. Rub it in well.
Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors to give time for the sunscreen
to bind and absorb into to the skin.
Use sunscreen any time you or your child might sunburn. Remember that you can get
sunburn even on cloudy days. Also, UV rays can bounce back from water, sand, snow,
and concrete so make sure you’re protected.

Summer Is On Its Way!

Wow! The month of May came and went so quickly.
It’s hard to believe summer is just around the corner. We

TEDDY BEARS AND THINGS THAT MOVE
June will be a fun month as well. Our first unit is “Things that
move” and our second unit is “Teddy Bear’s Picnic.” During “Things that
move”, we will be exploring all creatures and interesting
vehicles that move. We will also learn about the ways
our bodies move. During “Teddy Bear’s Picnic”, we will
explore the idea of a picnic with our furry friends and

fun way to be a kid. They are learning so much by just being in an
outdoor environment. There is so much for them to see and touch
and physically do. Please excuse the little dirty messes we may
make! Make sure there are at least two different changes of clothes
here for your child. For those really big messes!

Here comes summer…..
The month of June brings the themes “The Great Outdoors” and “Red, White and Blue” to the
Toddler B classroom. Our ‘bugs’ are going to love having a picnic snack, making S’mores, and going on nature hunts. The toddlers will be working on identifying objects by size such as small, medium and
large, name recognition, and identifying the star shape and the colors red, white and blue.
Oh, what fun we had in May!
As we wrap up the month of May we also wrap up the themes “Bugs and
Buddies” and “Muddy Puddles”. During these themes, the kids had a chance to
plant grass seeds and watch them grow…..slowly. They also had so much fun learning
how to make mud (ask them, and they will say water and dirt). And the best part
was making and eating “Cups of Dirt”! A wonderful concoction of chocolate pudding, Oreo cookies, and a gummy worm! Or as most Toddlers say, “Dummy worms”.

Warm weather is finally here, which means time for sunscreen! We ask you
to apply sunscreen to your bug in the morning before dropping them off. We will
apply sunscreen in the afternoon before going outside.


Please remember to bring home your little one’s sweatshirts. With the mornings be chilly and the evenings being warm, we tend to get a lot of sweatshirts
and light jackets left behind. ALSO, please make sure things are labeled;
this helps us keep track of it all!

J is for June

Summer has finally arrived! We have been so busy learning about
plants-how they grow, how to plant them, what they need to survive and

what they produce. We are busy planting and taking care of our garden and
also sampling our chives and mint that are growing out there (sorry about the
bad breath). With summer rushing in, field trip season is also upon us. We

are now done with our daily enrichment programs for the year, this time during the day is going to be replaced by fields trips. We had a good bye party for
LANA so she could go visit her friends and family in the rainforest for the

summer, we made her cards and had yummy veggie pizza! You all should have
received field trip packets, if you need a new one, let me know. All of our

field trips are going to take place here inside our building but, we planned
enough that the kids will be plenty busy! We will also start a new enrichment
program for the summer; “Grow It, Try It, Like It”. This coincides with LANA, where we plant and grow our own fruits and vegetables, maintain the

garden ourselves, and then try the final product! We are excited to extend
our love for fruits and vegetables throughout the summer!
During the month of June, we will be doing
three different themes. The first two weeks will be
spent discovering “Creepy Crawlies”. This unit is
really fun to teach and the kids all love BUGS! Around here we
find all different kinds of bugs on our playground. Make sure you
ask your child about metamorphosis. They will learn this life cycle
from egg to caterpillar to butterfly. It’s amazing!
After creepy crawlies we will do a week long
unit called “cattails and lily pads”. We get to learn
about the swampy life of certain amphibians (frogs) and
other animals that call the swamp their home.
The last unit will be two weeks of
“Up North”. This is one of my favorite units. We get


I can’t wait to have a paper airplane contest to see who makes the airplane

We will find out by using a string, straw, and balloon. Astronauts eat space
snacks, and so will we. We will make it and eat it, just like astronauts eat it,
through a plastic bag with a hole in it.

I cannot wait to explore the lake shores of Waconia. Please keep an eye out
on the parent board. We will be making Minnesota White Chili as a cooking
project. I will post a sign up sheet for those of you who would like to bring in
some ingredients.... YUM YUM!
