LAEF’s SUMMER CAMP will provide each child with:
 Increased physical fitness and enjoyable activities facilitated by qualified and experienced staff! The Camp
Director is LAHS Track and Field Head Coach Nathan Howard! Camp counselors will be local high
school and college athletes who will share their passion for sports, teamwork and integrity with your child!
 Summer Camp will include Soccer, Volleyball, Softball, Basketball, Indoor Activities, Water Activities and
much more!
 Children will be grouped by age and experience with no more than ten children in each group. Each
afternoon will expose children to four different sports or activities!
 Supervised Lunchtime available from 12:00 – 12:30pm for students enrolled in SEI. Bring your own sack

lunch!

LAEF’s Course Descriptions:
 Career Exploration:
This course is designed to expose students to a wide array of options in different, yet intriguing careers. Everyday
students will be exposed to a new and different career path. They have a no choice but to be motivated and
inspired by the four professionals! The 10 careers that will be covered during the 10 days are Health Fitness, Sports
Medicine, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Assisting Skills, Pathology, Criminal and Civil Law, Forensics, EMT,
Paramedics and Firefighting.
 Competitive Improv:
In this class, students will learn the basic techniques of improv comedy.
Basic performing techniques as well as keys of improv will be taught.
Students will participate in improv games that will assist them in thinking
on their feet.
 Dancer’s Workshop
This course is designed to develop body awareness, spatial awareness and
teamwork. Learning occurs through structured exercises and games that
promote creative thinking and action, teamwork and attention to nonverbal as well as verbal communication. Students work together to create
dances using skills learned throughout the workshop. Students explore
improvisatory dance expression. Guided individual, partner and group work
offer students the opportunity to develop their dance vocabulary and
increase comfort with integrating brain and body in the creative process.
Students perform an improvisational dance piece during the last class.
 Digital Photography:
Picture yourself as a visual communicator! With creativity and a focus on
education, students will learn to capture images to tell stories, convey
information, and evoke emotions. In our Digital Photography class, students
will learn from an instructor with a background in photography. They will
learn techniques, create projects, and use equipment that will allow them
to produce a great portfolio. *Students must provide their own digital
camera to use in class.*

 Drawing & Painting:
Master the fundamental techniques of Drawing & Painting while expanding your conceptual boundaries and
developing your own artistic vision! Students will create images to tell stories, convey information, and evoke
emotions. In our Drawing & Painting class, students will be guided by an instructor with an artistic background.
Students will learn techniques, create projects, and use processes that will allow them build a great portfolio. They
will also have the opportunity to learn techniques from classical to multicultural artists from around the World.
 iPad Video Production
Students will learn how to write a short script, storyboard their
ideas and shoot a short movie. Students will learn the basics
of screenwriting, then work as part of a team to make a short
film. Shoot films on your iPad and learn basic editing skills.
Have fun and be collaborative on this creative project.
**Students will need to bring their own iPad to class.**

 The Keys to Computer Technology:
Students who enroll in this class can expect to improve their keyboarding skills and also learn to utilize various
presentation apps on Google docs and Microsoft Office. During the first half of each class, students will be able to
work at their own pace as they utilize keyboarding instruction software to enhance their keyboarding skills. The
second half of each class will focus on learning how to best create presentations using applications like PowerPoint,
Google slides, Powtoons, etc. This will be a fun and practical class for all who attend!
 Keep It Straight! Organization Workshop
Do you need to improve your organizational skills? This class is a sure fire
approach to assist all students in this very essential piece of their
education success. Students will learn how to keep class schedules,
upcoming assignments and assessments organized. Note taking skills and
study skills will also be addressed. If you’re an Incoming 6th, this class will
help ease the transition into middle school. If you are an incoming 7th
grader, learn skills to help you in middle school and in life!
 Kickstarter to Math 6:
6th grade math will introduce students to new material in a challenging but exciting way. This class will prepare
students for Math 6 for the upcoming year. Students will enhance their basic math skills, number sense and
operations, use of formulas and problem solving skills. A solid foundation in the concepts of mathematics is
essential for success in middle school and high school math. Join us as we review and preview key concepts of
middle school math and realize meaningful applications of new-found math skills. Math-related games will also be
used to foster appreciation of subject matter.
 Kickstarter to Math 7:
This class is designed primarily for incoming 7th graders who enjoy math and who want to keep it fresh. This class
will prepare and start students on Math 7 for the upcoming year. This class will review skills involving whole numbers,
fractions, decimals and percentages. In addition, mathematical concepts including integers, patterns, geometry,
logic, problem-solving, number theory, discrete mathematics and basic algebra will be explored.
 Public Speaking:
Do you want to become a powerful public speaker before your peers? Public speaking
is designed to teach presentation skills for informative, persuasive, debate, and
impromptu styles of speech delivery. It will also focus on the written aspect of speech
organization, as well as how to be confident and comfortable in front of an audience.
This course prepares students for a variety of academic and other situations in which
formal presentations are required. Students will learn how to research, outline, and
deliver short, informal presentations as well as longer speeches. Students will also
learn about the qualities colleges value and how to strengthen their preparation for
college.

 Robotics:
This class provides students with engaging hands-on explorations of the computer
science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields through the use of
robots. Students will build and program real-life robotic solutions using motors,
sensors, batteries, connectors, and various structural elements. Through this engaging
program, students will show creativity, use teamwork, and strengthen their skills in
logic, math, problem solving, and deduction.
 Writing and Reading Comprehension:
While reading short stories, students will discuss character, plot, figurative language, and other literary devices.
Students will use thinking maps and small group discussions to deepen their understanding of the text. Through
teacher-guided practice, students will write process papers for each story they’ve read.
 Write On It!
Yes, writing can be fun! This creative writing course will help all middle school students (even reluctant writers) to
build the skills and confidence necessary to tackle any writing challenge. Students will explore both fiction and
nonfiction while learning to organize ideas, craft arguments, revise work, state a point of view, peer-edit a friend’s
work, and take pride in their personal progress.

Meet our highly qualified SEI Teachers!
David Barker (Competitive Improv)- David has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from CSULB and a Masters in Educational Administration
from CSULB. He is currently the math Department chair and Los Al Live Improv Advisor. He has been running the competitive improv team for
the past 6 years and has been a teacher for more than twenty years.
Seana Brief (Career Exploration)- Seana is an NOCROP instructor. She is teaching the career paths of Criminal & Civil Law and Forensics.
Alison Cotter (Write On It!)- Alison graduated from CSU, Long Beach in 2001 with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and prior she
earned her BS in Marketing from Syracuse University in 1985. Alison is currently an instructional specialist in presenting writing and grammar
workshops at the Writing and Reading Success Center at Long Beach City College. She is also currently a freelance College Application Essay
Coach. From 2001-2013, she served as an adjunct English Instructor at LBCC. Her organizational and study skills are exceptional and she
looks forward to teaching for LAEF this summer!
Wendy Hearn (The Keys to Computer Technology)- Wendy is in her twentieth year of teaching, and in that time she has taught all grades three
through eight. She currently teaches sixth grade reading, language arts, and history at McAuliffe Middle School and loves it! Wendy and her
husband have two sons (fourth and eighth grade) and live locally.
Julie Hernandez (Keep it Straight!, Writing and Reading Comprehension, and Kickstarter to Math 7)- Julie grew up in Seal Beach and
attended Hopkinson Elementary, Oak Middle School and graduated from Los Alamitos High School. She earned her BA in Liberal Studies and
her teaching credential from Loyola Marymount University. She then earned her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from CSU, Long
Beach. She currently teaches middle school literature, vocabulary, grammar and math. She is also an adult writing tutor for students at CSULB
and a guest lecturer.
Dr. Milt Houghton (Digital Photography)- Dr. Houghton has a BA degree in English Literature from Azusa Pacific University, a MA in
Communications from California State University, Fullerton, and a Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership degree from the University
of Phoenix. He is a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel with 32 years of combined active and reserve service. As a member of the US Army
Reserve, Dr. Houghton was also employed in civil service retiring as a GS13 with over 30 years of experience. Locally, Dr. Houghton served three
years as President of the Rossmoor Homeowners Association Board of Directors. Dr. Houghton and his wife have three children, one of whom
graduated from a Los Alamitos school, and two grandchildren. He is passionate about photography and has been pursuing this talent for over 30
years.
Sandra Knighton (Dancer’s Workshop)- Sandra received her BA in Musical Theatre Dance from SUNY Buffalo and her MA in Dance Therapy
from UCLA. She is also certified as a Movement Analyst and Personal Trainer. For the past 20 years, she has worked with students of all ages to
master the fundamentals of dance and expressive movement.
Morgan Martin (Robotics)- Morgan is in her sixth year of teaching, and in that time she has taught science to all grades six through twelve. She
currently teaches sixth grade earth science and seventh grade life science at Oak Middle School. In addition to teaching science, Morgan is a
coach for the Science Olympiad team and is providing assistance to Oak students for the STEAM fair and STEAM showcase. As a Los Alamitos
graduate, Morgan loves working for her alma mater.
Erynn Richardson (Drawing and Painting)- Erynn holds Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees; she has five years of
teaching experience and has shown her artwork over 20 times.
Lupe Rodriguez (Career Exploration)- Lupe is an North Orange County ROP instructor. Lupe will be teaching the career paths of Medical
Assisting Skills and Pathology.
Scott Semer (Career Exploration)- Scott is an NOCROP instructor. Scott will be teaching the career paths of Firefighting, EMT and Paramedics.
Courtney Shaw (Career Exploration)- Courtney is an North Orange County ROP instructor. Courtney will be teaching the career paths of Health
Fitness, Sports Medicine and Respiratory Therapy.
Wendy Tate (iPad Video Production)- Wendy earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts from UCLA, her Master of Arts in Educational
Theatre from New York University and her Certificate in Screenwriting from University of California, Irvine. She has earned four Emmy Awards in
a seven year span from 2001 to 2008. Wendy currently is the Program Coordinator of Video Production at LAVA Productions. Her passion is
making documentaries and she is excited to teach for LAEF this summer!
Sherry Ward (Kickstarter to Math 6)- Sherry Ward has been in the field of Education for over 25 years in mathematics and counseling. She has
four teaching credentials, including mathematics, business, computers, and counseling. Sherry has spent the past 9 years at several colleges as
the coordinator of their Teacher Preparation programs, teaching Education courses, and as a college counselor to veterans. She is a published
author and now owns a publishing company called Square Tree Publishing. She lives in Los Alamitos with her family and subs occasionally for the
district.
Arnold Weintraub (Public Speaking/College Prep)- Dr. Weintraub has been teaching since 1966. He received his BA degree from the University
of Nebraska at Omaha with a double major in English and Speech Communication. He received his MA and PHD degrees in Speech
Communication from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He taught English at every level, ranging from remedial through AP Honors. He coached
Debate for 11 years at Omaha Central High School. He has also taught several courses in Speech Communication at El Camino College and
Golden West College. Dr. Weintraub is an enthusiastic teacher and served as a walk-on coach at Los Alamitos High School, coaching the Debate
team and the Mock Trial team.

All registration will be completed on-line. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis.
A minimum enrollment of 8 students is required to be able to run classes.

On Campus at McAuliffe:
All secondary classes, grades six through eight, will take place on the McAuliffe Middle School campus, unless
otherwise noted. The Secondary SEI campus is open from 9:00am-1:00pm for classes. Students may be on
campus in between classes. During SEI, the LAEF office will be located at Hopkinson and will be open
from 7:30am-5:30pm. Should you need your child to leave their scheduled class earlier than the posted time,
please provide your child with a parental note specifying the date and time that they should be released. Cell
phones aren’t allowed to be powered on during instructional periods, but may be used before and after classes.
Behavior Expectations:
It is the goal of the Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) to provide a positive, safe, and secure
learning environment for all students. To ensure that all students have equal access to success and a sense of
well-being during the LAEF Summer Enrichment Institute, we expect that students behave appropriately.
Participating in SEI is a privilege and if a student has to be removed from a SEI classroom on more than one
occasion, the course fee will be forfeited and the child will no longer be able to participate in 2015 SEI courses.
Refund Policy:
Tuition is non-refundable unless LAEF cancels the class due to the minimum enrollment not being met. If
your child registers late, misses classes, or withdraws before the end of the session, you are still responsible for
the full fees of the session.
Scholarships:
Limited partial scholarships are available on a first come first serve basis. Applications are available at
