Thank you to everyone who attended the Reach for the Stars fund raiser at DaVita. It was a great success, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. If you were unable to attend the fundraising event this past Friday, McAuliffe would still love your support! We ended the evening falling short of our $80,000 goal to support our capital campaigns, as well as our programming that the McAuliffe at Smiley Foundation supports like our food bank, teacher appreciation, scholarships, and more. If you didn’t get a chance to donate yet this year, now is your chance to help us reach our goal. To help fill the gap, we still have some buyashares spots to sell. These are activities for students to do with their teachers, as well as a few adult parties. (To view those and purchase a spot or two, click here.) Also, if you would prefer to support McAuliffe through a onetime donation or through a monthly payment, please click here. Thank you in advance for your generous support of McAuliffe! And a special thanks to our student a cappella group for their incredible performance, led by Shannon WoodRothenberg! http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=e5456d139d01600542ee5a77e&id=030f06dd57&e=e04ce81853 2/13 3/26/2015 McAuliffe School News - March 26, 2015 CHAPERONES NEEDED FOR SERVICE LEARNING DAY APRIL 10 Have you wanted to do community service with your child? During our service learning day, students have chosen to support the The Stink Bug Project by selling and baking dog biscuits. The Stink Bug Project supports families, living in the Rocky Mountain region, who have a child diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness. They provide welltrained, loving companion dogs from the PrisonTrained K9 Program at Colorado Correctional Industries. Dogs have been shown to lower stress for patients and caregivers during this stressful time. The Stinkbug Project also finds ways to help siblings, who tend to get lost in the shuffle during this difficult time. If you would like to order or have your student sell biscuits, please print this order form and have your student turn it into the main office. Each bag of dog biscuits is $5. For questions, please contact service learning coordinator Sherry Beardshear at [email protected]. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR COMCAST CARES DAY AT MCAULIFFE! FREE LECTURE FOR PARENTS APRIL 13 McAuliffe is pleased to present a lecture for parents called “It’s not the 70’s Anymore” by attorney Karen Steinhauser, on Monday, April 13th at 6:30pm in the auditorium. This lecture is designed primarily for 8th grade families heading to high school in the fall, but all parents are invited to attend. Karen was a prosecutor in Denver for 20 years, and is now a law professor at DU and a criminal defense attorney. At least half of her practice is representing young people between the ages of 12 and 25. She put together this presentation to address the disturbing trends in the law pertaining to juveniles and would always hear from parents that the kids weren't doing anything worse than what we did. The problem is a lot has changed, including attitudes of police and prosecutors and judges, and the change in technology has added so many more complications for kids. Please join us for this FREE lecture. You are welcome to bring your student, but it is designed for parents. Yes, that one. Maybe you have or maybe you haven't yet. Maybe you're waiting for the right time to talk to your kids about sex. Or maybe just the thought of it makes your stomach turn. What if you say the wrong thing? With all of the technology and social media, it's time for parents to go beyond The Talk. In April, McAuliffe is offering two great workshops to make these important conversations just a little bit easierone for parents and another for students. Healthy Relationships: This presentation is designed to help students explore the main components of a healthy relationship. Through group discussion the students will explore the following components: trust, respect and communication. This presentation allows students the opportunity to explore their own feelings and opinions about what makes a relationship healthy as well as some potential warning signs to look for in their current and future relationships. Talk Is Power: This 1.5 hour workshop is designed specifically for parents, guardians, family members and youthserving professionals that want to sharpen their skills around talking with youth about sexuality and sexual health. Participants have the opportunity to explore their own values around sexuality in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. We will also explore how to respond to difficult questions about sexuality and how to plan an effective conversation with a young person.
