JULY 2015
VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Bill Sempier
Open House is generally the Lake’s Black Friday where we look
at the number of members we have and what we budgeted for
the year. At this time we are down 20 memberships, 463 vs 483
last year. We budgeted 145,000 for income from membership.
We came in at 141,807. This would put us only $3,192 under
budget (not too bad). In terms of memberships, that would be
about 8 family memberships short.
That being said, we as a community need to get out and talk to
our neighbors about the lake. Encourage them to come with you
on “Bring Your Neighbor to the Beach Day.” We have a lot to
offer so get the word out.
VOLUNTEER GREETERS NEEDED
We are looking for some friendly people to be greeters at
Hoffman beach. You would be relaxing in the sun while greeting members and potential members at the gate. We are looking
to have people from 1pm–5pm but any hours the beach is open
would be great. For more information please see either Ms. Price
or Mrs. Thore at the beach.
AUGUST BOARD MEETING DATE CHANGE
The August meeting will take place on Monday, August 3,
at the Clubhouse at 7:30pm.
NEW PICNIC AREA at HOFFMAN BEACH
I am happy to say that after nearly 10 years of discussion, one
of the visions for Hoffman beach is nearly complete. The tables
are in and the grill has a nice patio to stand on. We want to put
arborvitaes along the fence and look into either a large commercial
grade tent or canopy. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
You may also have noticed new railroad ties on the beach. Many
of the old rotten ones were replaced. In addition where the swing
set is now the wall was moved back about 4 ft making the beach
wider. The managers were excited to see the expansion as they
said now there’s more room for the egg toss.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS POSITIONS OPEN
In accordance with the Bylaws, the following positions
are available:
PresidentFinancial Secretary
Vice PresidentTreasurer
If you are interested in getting more information on what each
position is responsible for or what is needed to fill the position,
please email [email protected]
Big Jeff on July 10th!
Pack up a beach blanket and come down
for his outdoor musical visit to DREWES BEACH
in Lake Parsippany on Friday, July 10, at 6:30pm.

located at 705 Lakeshore Drive.
ALL are welcome!
Any questions contact Christie at 973-503-0333.
WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU

News & Views is published ten times a year by the Lake
Parsippany Property Owners Association. Subscription
rate is $12 annually; free to members of the LPPOA.
The great things about being a member
of the lake are the many opportunities
to meet new people, try different things
and be a part of a community. This past
spring I was able to help in cleaning up
Hoffman Beach. I don’t spend a lot of
time on that beach but I always see the
kids running back and forth and many of
the young at heart enjoying the sun and
sand. This year a new picnic and BBQ
area is being created where the swing
sets were (they were moved to the other
end of the beach). This idea came from
the community to our Beach Managers
and was made possible by the dedication of our volunteers. It is this kind of
community involvement that makes the
lake such a special place.
Earlier this spring we saw the results of
our harsh winter. On a Thursday afternoon one of our members noticed the
tremendous number of fish that had not
survived the winter. Through the efforts
of our fishing club, they quickly pulled
together a cleanup team and managed
to bag two thousand pounds of fish
and arrange for the township sanitation
department to pick it all up so it would
not be unpleasant on our shores. The Dragon Boat team got together to
rake up all of Johnson beach; members
walking around the lake picking up
any trash they find; the many people
involved in the activities of Open
House; all of these examples of a community working together. Each of us
contributes to the community we form.
Thank you for all of your efforts.
Without the efforts of our lake family
members we would not be the active
and vibrant community we are today.
Thank you to everyone who helps to
make this their home.

I hope you are all enjoying yourselves
this summer and finding time for the
beach and other relaxing aspects of
summer. Our second beach meeting
of the year will be at Hoffman’s Beach
on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 6:30pm.
We are asking that everyone try to
bring a new friend to each of our beach
meetings this summer. Let’s think of
others and share the joy of these fun
events with new people. Of course they
can come by themselves but might feel
more welcome with an invitation and
even an offer of a ride. Don’t forget a
chair and if your last name begins with
A–F bring an appetizer, G–M bring a
salad, and N–Z bring a dessert. Everyone
bring your own beverage.

We classed up our book club meeting,
Edith Wharton style. A semi proper table
was set for 12, with candles and china
and glasses. We were still quite casual
compared to ‘Age of Innocence’ standards. I have no doubt we did not use
the proper utensils, our fashion sense
was probably not up to par, we chimed
in with radical thoughts as we saw
fit(how very Bohemian!). The assortment
of appetizers consisted of apple turnovers, delicious cookies, candied nuts,
Brie appetizers and Prosecco! Many of
us had a hard time getting through this
book, with its old-fashioned language
and rigid protocols. Some even chose
to watch the movie instead of read the
book, but no matter, we had a good
time poking fun at the characters and the
privileged society life and are thankful
of the times we now live in. Let us know
what you think!

JUNE’S TOPIC WAS “THINK POSITIVE
START SAILING THIS SUMMER” The
forecast has never looked better. Kids,
adults and sailboats go together like
ducks and water. Sailing combines skill,
dexterity, and a sharp mind to harness
the wind and go where you want to go. WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT IT
ANYWAY? Sailing gets everyone outdoors and gives them an understanding
and respect for the environment. When
you get out on the water, you care more
about what’s in the water. After stressful
days at work or school, sailing can be a
wonderful release for many of us. We also
gain independence and a sense of accomplishment. Doing something we’ve never
done before opens our minds to new
experiences, gives us a feeling of success,
and feeds our self-confidence. It also will
help you make new friends. But, enough
of all that. Here’s the take-home message.
Learning to sail is fun. That’s what brings
people back to the sport day after day.
There’s something new to see, learn, and
experience whenever you set sail. Just like
sponges, we soak everything up and learn
fast. Sailing is something we can enjoy
our entire lives. SAILING CLASS INSTRUCTORS worked
in a wide variety of positions from
orientation in the equipment room to
helping with all props; proper raveling
and unraveling of sails; helping to show
everyone how to capsize; PFD demonstration; steering a course, and setting
up a boat. As the class came to an end,
the sailors along with their instructors
went sailing for a hands-on experience.
They learned about turning, irons, tacking and jibbing, and returning back to
our sailing center. Without all of the
instructors this program would not be
possible. I THANK ALL OF YOU. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON SAILS This
year you can leave your midweek blues
at home and come out for a rejuvenating Wednesday afternoon sail on Lake
Parsippany to break up the work week
and end with watching the sun set
behind the lake. A LARGE THANK YOU Without all of
the staff of volunteers this program would
not be possible. I THANK ALL
OF YOU AGAIN. 6

Winnie Marone
May was a busy month for the fishermen this season with Joey Dolock and
Pete Celencevicius spending a lot of
time at 12 Foot trying to find one or
two of the tagged trout that are still out
there. Tony Suprum and Larry Galante
reported reeling in 13 bass for two
weekends in a row, one being a 4 lb.
1oz and another being a 4 lb. 3oz.
Unfortunately, neither one of these bass
could be found for the May 23 contest.
The week before the contest, Mario
Fornini IV, who is only 7 years old, was
seen reeling in a 4 lb. 10 oz. bass on
Fisherman’s path using a brown worm.
We hope his Dad sends in the picture
or drops off a copy at the bait shop for
the photo wall. Our first bass contest of the year was a
huge success with not only fishermen,
but also some of their sons, daughters and wives. Joe Corforte had only
one bass, and his wife Joann caught a
sunny. Their 8 year old daughter Alexa
didn’t get any bites, but she really
enjoyed being on the boat with her
Mom and Dad. Mario Fornini had his
son Mario IV on his boat for a while,
but Dad was the one who brought in
a total weight of 8 lb. 12oz. Dylan,
11 years old, and his Dad, Sebastian
Ostolaza, were in the contest as well.
Dylan was the one who caught a bass
weighing 1 lb. 12oz. Gio Martino had
a 3 pounder which helped him win the
total weight of 10 lbs. 8oz, while Henry
Corfote was the lunker winner with his
3 lb. 10oz. Larry Galante had a 1 lb.
12oz but earlier in the week he caught
2 bass on one lure at the same time.
One was a 2 pounder and the other a
3 pounder. That’s another picture for a
future News & Views. This was the first
time we used the weigh and release
method, rather than bring the fish in
to be weighed and then release it from
shore. Since the scales can record up
to ten fish I am sure we will use this
method in the future.
This year’s winners of our Open House
chances were Mike Kratt, who won the
children’s rod and reel, Tony “Pop”
Suprum who won the adult rod and
reel and re-donated it back to the club.
Peggy Kudlac won the basket of cheer
and Carole Schwarz was the very
happy winner of the 50/50.
The next bass contest will be on July
11 with registration in advance. The
start time was not definite at the time
of writing so give me a call and I can
give you more info at that time.
The next club meeting is scheduled
for July 17, at 7pm at the bait shop on
the lake. We are looking to schedule
a children’s fishing contest but need to
hear from either the junior fishers or
their parents. Give me a call with any
ideas you may have to get the young
ones involved with a great sport.

THANK YOU ALL WHO MADE OPEN HOUSE A SUCCESS
Paul Cecala
The 2015 Open House was another big
success! More than 300 people visited
the beach. More than 1,000 spent time
at the 100 vendors in the Flea Market!
Many of those had never been to our
neighborhood before and some even
joined our lake!
Flea Market vendors stretched from the
horseshoe pits to Caldwell Rd., nearly a
half mile’s distance. There were people
selling their family heirlooms, Avon
products, handmade jewelry, and much
more. Several of our clubs had booths
as well. The swim team collected used
clothes donation and the book club
sold hundreds of used books; wonderful
fundraisers for them. Even our neighbors
got in on it by having their own garage
sales that day.
Loren Arrowsmith and her team did a
great job of running and marketing the
flea market. Her team and her children
spent numerous hours putting the day
together. Loren’s marketing activities
benefitted the LPPOA with several new
memberships, added income, and hundreds of people learning more about our
association.
A great addition to this year’s event
was our new swim docks and the Pirate
Swim Team’s races for anyone interested.
About 20 youngsters participated in several fun races with noodles and hoops.
The Kayak Club is becoming a popular
tradition with Don Phelps giving anyone
who wished a lesson; and the Garden
Club, Ladies Club and Fishing Club also
had opportunities for people and children to learn more about them.
The Horseshoe Team helped with set-up,
Men’s Club led by Dan O’Connor and
Bill Foote cooked up a storm of burgers
and dogs, Membership team did a steady
business, and the Dragon Team brought
over a boat for the traditional Eye
Dotting Ceremony. The Security Team
helped with keeping traffic going along
Lake Shore Dr. throughout the afternoon.
We need to thank our community
partners as well—Mayor Barberio for
continuing the tradition of Mayors visiting our Open House; Parsippany’s first
responders—Parsippany Police, Lake
Parsippany Volunteer Fire Department,
Parsippany Volunteer Ambulance Squad,
the Parsippany CERT (Community
Emergency Response Team) who helped
with traffic control all morning and the
flag raising; Boy Scout Troop 173 and
their bugler; the Morris County Mosquito
Control; and our Face Painting teens all
contributed to our day.
