Until Next Month, Your Recreation Department Bill, Eileen & Josephine Celebrate Father’s Day: Sunday June 21st 2015 No matter how you choose to celebrate Father’s Day, you can thank a woman named Sonora Louise Smart Dodd for the tradition. Father’s Day history begins with this resident of Spokane, Washington. She was the oldest of 6 children who were raised by their father, Civil War Veteran William Jackson Smart, after their mother died during childbirth. Listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Sonora made up her mind to establish a day to honor fathers. With support from the Spokana Ministerial Association and the YMCA, the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th 1910 a couple of weeks after Sonora’s father’s birthday. On that day, young members of the YMCA went to church wearing a rose to honor a living father or a white rose to honor a deceased one. Father’s Day became an official holiday 62 years after President Richard Nixon proclamation in 1972. **Celebrate Father’s Day at Lake Shore with Dad at our afternoon Family Ice Cream Social. All families are invited to join us at 2:00pm in the Main Dining Room. We would like to wish all fathers a Happy Father’s Day! Grandma Glo’s Joke Column: Jonny’s Dream Notable Quote “You know when you’re young you think you will always be. As you become more fragile, you reflect and you realize how much comfort can come from the past.” ~ Andy Griffith, One night, Little Johnny went to sleep and dreamt his Uncle Bill died. He woke up and that evening, his dad got a call saying the Uncle Bill died. The next night, Little Johnny went to sleep and dreamt his Aunt Joy died. He woke up, and then that evening, his dad got a call saying Aunt Joy died. He told his daddy, “Two days ago, I had a dream Uncle Bill died, and then yesterday, I had a dream Aunt Joy died. His dad said, “that’s just a coincidence.” The next morning he tells his dad, “I had a dream that my dad died.” His dad was terrified. He had the worst day at work and took every precaution. He didn’t eat any of the food in case of food poisoning, and he drove slowly in case of a car wreck. When he finally got home, Little Johnny’s mom asks him how his day was. “Much more horrible than your day I’m sure,” his dad replied. “I don’t know,” said his mom, “The milkman dropped dead on the front porch today! Wear Blue During Men’s Health Month June is Men’s Health Month—a time to cast aside being macho and embrace the advice medical science has to offer. A leading threat to men’s health is cardiovascular disease, a hardening of arteries that leads to strokes or heart attacks. To combat this deadly disease, commonsense medical advice applies: exercise at least 30 minutes a day, eat fruits and vegetables, get your cholesterol checked, and stop smoking. Through the month of June, people will be wearing blue in support of men’s health issues. For you men out there, June may be the time to try a new hobby or exercise, such as yoga, weight lifting, golf, or gardening. Work’s Best Friends Have Their Own Day in June Though June 24 is widely celebrated as Take Your Dog to Work Day, not every workplace is welcoming to our furry companions. Then again, large companies like Proctor & Gamble, Amazon, and Google allow pets in the office year-round. Why? As it turns out, pets in the office have been proven to boost morale and lower stress. And bringing your dog—or cat, bird, fish, hamster, or any other pet—makes many people healthier and happier at work. and bowls. Of course, not every dog is meant for the workplace. Poorly trained or barking pooches might have to stay at home. On the other hand, bringing your dog to the office might be good for your dog’s health too. Companies can make bringing animals to work easier for everyone by making work pet-friendly. Parks or grassy areas give dogs a place to relieve themselves. Some offices even provide special dog Perhaps a nine-to-five water fountains and free routine is just what the biscuits. Owners also have veterinarian ordered. to remember to bring their dog leashes, treats, beds, Strawberry Picking East End of Long Island The East End of Long Island is ripe with places where you can pick your own strawberries. Harvesting your own fruit is not only fun, it connects you to where your food comes from and supports local farmers. It also allows you to experience food at its freshest, right off the vine. This is especially important for Long Island Strawberries, which are sweeter and more delicate than most grocery store varieties. Join us on Tuesday June 16th for a scenic ride out on the North Fork of Long Island. On the agenda: strawberry picking, wine tasting and a stop at a local farm stand. Poetry Corner: Celebrate Summer The month of June is upon us soon. Spring breezes become warm summer winds. Young boys and girls are jumping for joy. Graduates toss their caps into the air. Seniors who participate in arts and crafts or are socially active in middle and older age were 73 percent less likely to suffer cognitive impairment that those who were inactive, according to a new fouryear study led by researchers from the Mayo Clinic. Protective activities include painting, sculpting, quilting, sewing, movies with friends, book clubs or traveling. Those who used the Internet or played computer games also were less likely to suffer cognitive impairment. The average age of the study group was 87. Researchers said the results showed “engaging the mind” may help the brain generate new neurons, the building blocks of memory and cognitive functioning. **Don’t miss our weekly Work Shops and Arts & Craft Classes with Eileen, always fun, stimulating and good for your health!
