Dear Family & Friends,
Here comes May Day,
Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s
Day, Memorial Day,
Armed Forces Day, and
Shavuot. Add Gifts from
the Garden Month and
Herb Month, and it’s about
“thyme” to celebrate May!
Oh what a glorious month
when the weather is finally
warming up and the
flowers are in full bloom…
This month we will have
our first picnic of the
season (and we know you
can’t wait!) We have also
planned a special Mother’s
Day Celebration on
Sunday May 10th. We invite
all friends and family to
join us for this afternoon of
sweet treats and musical
entertainment by John.
Memorial Day is the
unofficial start of the
summer. For Memorial
Day Weekend we have put
together a special show
with musical guest Jim
Papa in our newly
remodeled court yard.
Enjoy delicous treats,
dancing and cocktails.
May is such a beautiful
month on Long Island. We
hope you all take
advantage of spending time
outside in sunshine and the
activities we have planned
for the month.
Happy Mother’s Day!

It’s Time to Celebrate Motherhood
Celebrated with great
enthusiasm in the U.S.,
Mother’s Day falls on
Sunday, May 10. It’s Anna
Jarvis who’s known as “the
mother of Mother’s Day,”
for she so adored her mom
that she campaigned for a
holiday to celebrate all
mothers. Jarvis herself
never married nor bore
children, but this didn’t
stop her from lobbying
those in power to set aside
a day to honor mothers. In
1914, U.S. President
Woodrow Wilson made the
second Sunday in May
“Mother’s Day.”
Meanwhile, in the U.K., a
holiday honoring
motherhood dates back
much further. In the 1600s,
the fourth Sunday of Lent
was dedicated as
Mothering Sunday. Church
service was devoted to the
Virgin Mary, and families
were encouraged to attend
services not at their local
parish but at their “mother”
church, or cathedral. The
tradition of Mothering
Sunday largely died out in
the 19th century, but when
American servicemen
flooded Europe during
World War II—bringing
their American Mother’s
Day holiday with them—
Mothering Sunday became
popular once again.
Mother’s Day is now
celebrated in March or
May in countries around
the globe, including
Australia, Canada, Spain,
India, and South Africa.

because my daddy left me a lot of

Husband-“That’s not true. I don’t care
who left you the money.”
No Change:
When Johnny swallowed three pennies
and a nickel, his mother rushed him to
the hospital. After a few hours, she
asked the doctor how Johnny was
doing. The doctor replied, “There’s no
change yet.”

An Expression of Aloha
In Hawaii, May Day is Lei Day. Since
1927, Hawaiians have celebrated this
holiday and publically honored the
lei—that quintessential Hawaiian
necklace fashioned of flowers and
vines.
Lei garlands are given as an expression
of welcome, friendship, and support
when a loved one arrives, departs, or
celebrates something special.
The act of fashioning a lei is a sacred
one. Legend has it that, as the creator
weaves a lei, a piece of his spirit enters
into the garland—and passes along to
the recipient.

Following a Technological Treasure Map
Geocaching is a sport that
combines treasure hunting
and technology. The very
first geocache consisted of
a five-gallon bucket filled
with a map, two CDROMs, a cassette
recorder, a VHS movie
tape, a book, four $1 bills,
a slingshot handle, and a
can of black-eyed peas. It
may not be glamorous, but
this treasure has
nonetheless gone down in
geocaching history as the
“Original Stash.” The
bucket was buried in the
ground by Dave Ulmer of
Beavercreek, Oregon.
On May 3, 2000, he
posted the stash’s GPS
coordinates—of N 45°
17.460 W 122° 24.800 —
online. In this way,
anyone with a hand-held
GPS device could find this
buried “treasure.” And
geocaching was born. This
sport is now practiced
worldwide, with millions
of caches hidden all
over—just waiting for
someone to find them.
And while food like the
original can of beans from
Ulmer’s first geocache
(now housed in the case at
right) is no longer allowed
in caches, that can of 15year-old beans remains the
“most-found travel bug in
the world.”
France’s May 5 March to Puebla
El Cinco de Mayo—Spanish for “the Fifth of May”—has
become known as the day of Mexico’s independence. But
it actually celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over the French at
the Battle of Puebla, led by General Ignacio S. Zaragoza. In 1862, Mexico had just
gained independence from Spain. France seized this as an opportunity to expand its
empire and launched an assault at Veracruz, a 600-mile march from Mexico City. An
underwhelming Mexican militia of 4,500 led by Zaragoza met the 8,000 well-armed
French troops at Puebla. Though the French army was considered the greatest fighting
force in the world, the Mexicans defeated the French in this battle. Six years later,
France withdrew its claim on the country. It was this May 5 David-versus-Goliath
moment that instilled a new sense of patriotism and national pride in the young
country of Mexico. Celebrate

Resident of the Month: Bobby Dolling
Our Resident of the month is Beulah
Dolling or as she likes to be called
“Bobby.” Bobby was born and raised
in the Brownsville section of
Brooklyn. Bobby’s father was a
sewing machine operator working in
the garment district. Her mother was a
salesgirl in Gimbels until she had her
children.
Bobby had one older brother Eddie
and one younger brother Morton. She
got along great with her brothers who
were very protective of their only
sister.
Bobby went to PS 144 until 6th grade.
She then attended an all-girls school
from the 6th grade to the 8th grade. One
of Bobby’s favorite memories of her
school years was swimming class! As
they progress with the lessons the girls
were given different color bathing caps
as their swimming improved. She
never got past the first color-“I hated
to swim!”
Bobby attended the Thomas Jefferson
High School. After High School
Bobby worked part time as a
bookbinder and a professional dancer,
which she really love!
Bobby met her husband Ben at a party.
Ben came to the party with a girl but
left with Bobby…They dated for four
years before getting married. They
stayed in Brooklyn for a while and had
two children, a daughter Sandra
Michele and a son Dennis Michael.
Ben worked as a boilerrmaker welder,
and Bobby was a good homemaker but
a lousy cook! They ate out a lot!
Bobby and Ben moved to Long Island
in the 50’s. They first bought a home in
North Bellmore then moved to
Moriches. Ben loved the water and
boating so Moriches was the perfect
spot. Bobby made many friends in
Moriches, many of whom she is still
friends with today. Bobby has
volunteered at various places
throughout her life. “I love to help
people, making someone happy makes
me happy!” In June 1996 Bobby started
volunteering at Brookhaven Hospital.
She continued volunteering there for
over 19 years. She loved volunteering
there and is remembered to this day.
Bobby came to Lake Shore last May.
She can be found playing Bingo, going
out on all the bus trips, she especially
loves eating out at J&R Steakhouse &
Wendy’s.
Say hi to Bobby, she’s very friendly and
has no trouble holding up her half of the
conversation☺
Health & Fitness Corner: Meditation in May
In addition to the other
holidays and observances
on page 1, May also is
“Meditation Month.” For
some, meditation is an
important part of
spirituality—where a calm
and open mind creates a
space for divine influence,
prayer, and worship. For
others, meditation reduces
stress, builds confidence,
and even supports
personal goals at work or
in the home. Still others
use meditation for pain
relief.
There are a variety of
meditation techniques.
One method is to repeat a
mantra or sound. Some
chant the Sanskrit syllable
om, while others choose to
repeat any phrase they
wish. The goal is to be
comfortable, focus on the
sound, and shut off the
intellectual side of our
brains. Other methods,
such as Zen Buddhist
meditation, focus on the
breath. Participants
practice in a seated
position or lie flat on their
backs, breathing deeply
and focusing on individual
body parts. With “guided
visualization,” participants
concentrate on an
imaginary environment
such as a grassy field or
beneath a waterfall.
These are just a few
meditation types. It’s
important to check with
your doctor before finding
a variety that works best
for you. Luckily, there are
31 days in May to explore
all the options.
Lake Shore’s May Birthdays
In astrology, those born
from the 1st to the 20th
in May have the star
sign of the Bull of
Taurus. Bulls show
steady, dogged
persistence. Once goals
are reached, they enjoy
being rewarded. Those
born between the 21st
and 31st are Gemini’s
Twins. Geminis love
conversation, and
they’re good at it, too!
Witty, intellectual,
curious, and
imaginative, they‘re
often the life of the
party.
