Principal’s Message
Lakewood students are looking
forward to participating in a
wide variety of activities during
the month of May – Marathon
Club, the John Taylor ‘Family
of Schools’ Concert, the May
Assembly, the St. James
Regional Heritage Fair,
Lakewood Idol, the SJSD
Spring Youth Forum, classroom field trips, track and field,
and so much more.
May is also the time of year
when our students’ outdoor
activity levels increase. The
students at Lakewood become
involved in a number of community sports and outdoor activities such as soccer, baseball, bike riding, running, etc.
These sports and outdoor activities are extremely worthwhile and are essential to a
child‘s growth and development. However, with school
gradually coming to a close, it
is extremely important that our
students continue to display
good work habits at school,
complete their daily assignments, and review their school
work at home on a regular
basis in order to maintain and/
or increase their levels of
achievement in all subject
areas. Parental support in
ensuring that our students are
getting a good night’s sleep,
eating well, and maintaining
effective work habits at school
and at home is greatly appreciated!
Although we may only have
two months of school remaining, it is shaping up to be a
very busy but rewarding time.

Dear Parents,
April showers bring May
flowers and we are all ready
for May. There are many
things to celebrate in the
month of May. We celebrate
the academics our students
have learned thus far: favorite
books they’ve enjoyed, stories
they have written, and math
problems they have learned to
solve! May also reminds us of
all there is to learn about our
world and the joy we receive
from nature‘s new beginnings.
Children are so interested in
learning about their environment: plants, trees, animals,
insects, rocks, and even all
there is to know about dirt! It
reminds us all to view the
world through a child‘s eyes—
all that fosters curiosity and
magic!

FIRST PLACE in St. JamesAssiniboia School Division was
recently announced, and proudly
awarded to our very own
Lakewood School Patrols for
their exemplary dedication and
performance in keeping our
students safe to and from school.
In recognition of their achievement, all our Grade 5 patrols will
be attending an awards ceremony
hosted by the Winnipeg Police
Service at the Convention Center
on June 5, 2015. This is the 4th
year in a row that our Lakewood
School Patrols have received this
honor. This is a huge accomplishment for our students, as
there are 15 elementary schools
in our division that employ
patrols. Special thanks goes out
to our very capable students, and
to their parents, who help ensure
that their children fulfill their
commitment by being reliable
and prompt in their duties. It has
been my honour to work with
these Grade 5 students. I am so
proud of their achievement.

Gym News
“Every child is a winner if they try their
very best!”
As we prepare to wrap up our
season of sports and extracurricular activities, the Volleyball Club will be taking part in a
Friendship Tournament at John
Taylor Collegiate on Monday,
May 4th, and the Badminton
Club will begin the following
week (Tuesday. May 12, 2015—
3:25 p.m.-4:25 p.m.).
Also available to all students in
Kindergarten to Grade 5 is our
Marathon Club. This club is
designed to meet the needs of
anyone interested in developing
their fitness by walking, jogging,
or running. The club meets on
Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 8:25 a.m.
in front of the school. One lap
around the school building is 400
meters, which means that four
laps around the building will
equate to 1.6 kilometers or one
mile. For the students in Grades
2-5 who are not able or interested in making the early morning
jog, we also meet every Tuesday
and Thursday from 11:25 a.m.11:55 a.m. The group will eat in
the gym following their jog.

The Grade 4/5 students will
be performing at the ‘Family
of Schools’ concert on
Monday, May 4, 2015 at 7:00
p.m. at John Taylor Collegiate. The theme this year is
space. The students will be
performing a very special
rendition of “Catch a Falling
Star” with glow sticks and
rope lighting. The students
have worked very hard on
this piece and will make
Lakewood School very proud.
This is a free concert open to
everyone. Please come out
for a wonderful evening of
music making.
For those students in Grade 4
and 5 who own an acoustic
guitar and are interested in
learning how to play their
guitar, please be sure to sign
up for Lakewood’s Guitar
Club. This club will meet every Tuesday and Thursday
during the lunch hour
starting on Tuesday, May
12th. Many students are
preparing for the St. James
Divisional Musical Theatre
auditions. This year, they are
preparing Lion King for their
production in January 2016.
Good luck to all of the students who are auditioning.
They have been working very
hard on their songs and lines.

ROOTS OF EMPATHY BABIES NEEDED
Lakewood School is looking for families to volunteer with their young babies for the Roots of
Empathy program. This evidence-based program brings a baby into an elementary school
classroom over a school year and the results are lowering of aggressive behaviours and an
increase of pro-social behaviours. The children bond to the baby – develop emotional literacy –
and bullying is reduced. Families who might be interested can contact Lakewood School at
204-889-9360 or e-mail the school at [email protected]. Babies need to have been born
between June and September 2015. There are family visits once a month (9 visits) starting in October and the sessions are conducted by a certified Roots of Empathy instructor. Families who participate see their baby become a
VIP and have an enjoyable experience while making a difference. Thank you for your consideration!

The purpose of the Class Placement Process is to maximize learning and teaching opportunities for all students and
teachers by constructing balanced classes.
The class creation process is a complex one involving the gathering of information about student needs and the
making of collaborative decisions from staff and administrative teams about student placement in classes.
Factors considered are academic progress, individual learning styles, interactions between classmates, specific learning needs in different areas, gender balance, and information provided by the current teachers, child, and parents.
School organization and classroom make up are also determined by many other factors; numbers of students
registered in a grade, combinations of grades, and staff allocation.
Placing students is not an easy task and the professionals in our school invest a great deal of time and thought into
the process.
If you have concerns/information to share, please speak with your child’s current teacher about your child’s needs.
Try to elaborate on the learning environment and program structure that you feel best meets the educational needs of
your child.
Class list placements will be finalized and included with June report cards after this process has been completed.
