For what?. Giving up taste to give taste to life. Lent helps in preparation for a new life experiences & a new lifestyle. Because Lent ends on Easter with a flame of light: a Sunrise that scatters the darkness of death. And this invites us to lead a new lifestyle which knows the pain and suffering of the surrounding and becoming more and more meaningful to that realities of life. “Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life…, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph. 4: 22 – 24). 6:00 pm 1:00 pm 7:00 pm Long tailed Kangaroo moves forward and never backwards. The same way, we Christians are supposed to be transformed in our minds and hearts having accepted Christ and now we have to move forward, making a step forward in our spiritual journey, if our new life in Christ is to be of any avail. To put off the old sinful, decadent and contemptible self is obligatory in the Christian life. Josef Stalin of the USSR signed three long lists of death sentences against various people on December 12th, 1938. And his heart was so hardened by sin and depravity that on the same night he went to his personal theatre and watched two frivolous shows. Stalin’s biographer, Dmitri Vokogonov, wonders how any human being could have a heart so calloused, as to smile and laugh after ordering the killing of some five thousand people, many of whom he knew personally. In our Christian journey, it is critical that we must guard against hard – heartedness and pray for a spirit that is against depravity and sadism. One aspect of having a new nature in Christ is that we are to release all resentment and hardness of heart against those that have grieved or offended us. We often use our human nature, as an excuse to harbor grudges against people convinced that it is good enough reason not to forgive. At such times, we must remember that it is God who transforms our nature, and redeems our humanity so that with the new nature of Christ all things are possible to us. We must not make a mountain of resentment out of a molehill of minor irritation. Life has enough mountains to be scaled. Moreover, climbing is easier when we are not carrying a burden of grudges. Praise God for His priceless love that He gave His only Son for our redemption – sacrifice which overpowered all death forces. This is the true love, i.e., willingness to sacrifice all. John, the apostle, in his epistle calls for true love – the hallmark of church in every century. He points to the negative example of Cain and to the positive example of Christ (1 Jn. 3: 11 – 24). Love’s reference point is Christ’s death. The demand for love is at His command, the meaning of love is found in His example, and the power to love comes from His Spirit (Jn. 15: 12, 13; Gal. 5: 22). Love is the self – test, the evidence of spiritual life in Christ (Jn. 5: 24). Therefore, Church should involve in loving each other in a way that make claims upon our time, emotions, possessions and our very lives. A handkerchief made of valuable material was ruined by an indelible inkblot. The owner could no longer display his prized possession. So he showed it to an English art critic and painter, John Ruskin. He worked on it, and with remarkable skill made that ugly ink spot the center of a beautiful design thereby giving it new life.
